In the 30's 40's and early 50's Laquer was used for lane conditioner. Then came
Shellac and then during the late 70's modern lane conditioners were developed
and coontinue to evolve.  The main reason for the change was due to over the
course of time The Laquer surface would be exosed to the constant friction and
could cause a fire. Thus the reason for the changes in conditioners.  This

Bowling the erfect game and it was hosted by Nelson Burton Jr. and Chris

I greatly appreciate all this information. I have a certain love for the way

nothing like today. If you had a line, you had a line. Look at some of the pin
action of those older bowling matches...not like today and those people threw
solid pocket shots! For instance, I almost missed the head-pin one frame on
Wednesday. I caught it just enough to send it off the wall and have it meander
back and take out a few pins for a strike. In the old days that would have been
a grandpa's teeth split at best! I'm not complaining, just remarking how things
were then...and now.

Anyone know what they used for a lane conditioner back then? Did they use oil?
Wax? Back east here we have a wax, that for years was called "Butchers Bowling
Alley Wax" or something close to that. Was it really used for that? Were the
lanes waxed and that was all? If you all watched the utube of Carmen Salvino and
Eddie Kowalics, it doesn't appear that the lanes are really running that much.
Back in the 80's there was a house I bowled in that *any* ball I threw hooked
off the lanes, generally... even one of those old Manhattan Rubber ones! This
house, by the way, last I looked has been changed to one of those average 240
houses. How nice, not that I liked it the way it was years ago...

Anyway, any of you know about how they conditioned the lanes back then feel free
to relay it to us here, as I'm sure some are interested in more than just
scores.

   him. I started to tell him that, but decided not to be cocky. I
   struck in the 7th and 8th. 8th frame, the ball felt weird on my hand,
   but I didn't reset(2nd dumb mistake in the game). Pulled the shot and
   left a 6pin. Spared it, but now I can only shoot 256. I ended up
   finishing with 244, and 656 total(703 won the money). So, I didn't
   win any money, and we only won the 2nd game.
   So close...

Regarding bowling lanes, I remember we had a nice little bowling center
(that sounds a little big, this one had 15 lanes at best) that must have had
pin boys as it was from the 50's. I remember going there when I was very
young and then it closed. What a shame. I would love to find out more about
it... I was thinking about posting a message in the town web site looking
for any information that people could provide.

A line or two about my bowling lately. I'm happy about how I am progressing
and learning/relearning this game. I will take a few lessons with that pro
that helped me. He said there are many things we could try and implement. I
will give him a try, I believe he is right. He told me that with my style
and dedication, I should average much higher than I do... We'll see.

I'm having next week off but after that I will start to practice more (the
practice alone on Wednesday did a world of good) and have a few lessons.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to share this story with you.
I got asked to sub last night and there were a lot of high scores.
A friend of mine was bowling next to us and shot 300-258-258 for an 816.
It was great!
There were like 4 or 5 258 games shot on that pair of lanes last night.

I was shooting pretty well too. I started with a 265 and 257... not wanting
to do the math so I wouldn't think about
if I could shot 800 or not, I told myself I needed 300 and to just keep
shooting like I had been.
Well, I strung the first 8, then 10 pin. At this point after sparing the ten
pin, again not wanting to do the math, I told myself
just to finish out and have a good series while another guy came up and
said, you had a chance at 800 didn't you, sounding as if I had missed it.
I still didn't know I had a chance at 800 and didn't want to think about it
even though I was hoping in the back of my mind.
Well, I needed 2 strikes and a 9 count for a 278 game and 800 series...
again, not knowing this I just went up there and made shots... X X then
I got it a little wide, came up high for an 8 count and the crowd behind me
goes nuts, awe one more pin!!!
Yep, shot 277 for a 799 :(
I was a bit upset for a while, but since I hadn't thrown all great shots,
got away with some bad ones, I felt pretty good about shooting what I did.
I shot 800 before, but realizing I was so close, blowing it and didn't even
know it, I found it tough to swallow.

On a happier note, I got the strike pot ticket, threw the strike and won
$275!
We decided to press our luck and try for a 50/50 ticket raffle... missed it
by one also! lol

I grew up in the Boston area in the 50's where "10-pin" bowling wasn't
available. It wasn't real bowling to us Bostonians. I grew up bowling
candlepins....My average, as a young adult, was around 118, which is pretty high
for candlepins....Ten pins came along in the late 50's and early 60's. I
remember going to a YMCA in Boston for a birthday party, where we swam and
bowled. The bowling alley did not have automatic pinsetters...We took turns
going into the pit to set the candlepins up. There was a lever in the back that
the pinsetter would step on. When that lever was stepped on, 10 little
metal guide pins came up through the pin deck and stuck up in the air approx
1/2 to 3/4 inch. The candlepins themselves were all hollowed out at both end to
recieve these guide pins. All the pinsetter had to do, was set the candlepins
upon the guides, step off of the lever, and get the hell away. I also know that
the owner of the
"Turnpike Bowladrome" in Cambridge Mass designed his own pinsetters, and was
using them when I left the Boston area in 1973

Yeah, we used to have crayon and those hot light tables that projected it up on
the small wall that hung down at the foul line. Most bowling alleys still have
that small wall hanging down just behind the automatic score keeper screens.
Serves to help block the sound too.

Doing it by hand use to afford us the opportunity to "build a fence" when we
were not doing so well, or put the rooftop on the 111 score. Or linking the
strikes together with a line.
One nice thing the automatic score keepers did carry over was not adding the
score up when you have a string of strikes going.

I REMEMBER PIN BOYS WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER .. USED TO GO TO A SMALL CENTER ON
GLENWOOD AVE. IN PHILLY THEY HAD PIN BOYS THERE..ALSO DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE
OLD SCORE TABLES WHERE THEY HAD A BIG BLOCK OF ROSEN ON ONE SIDE AND A RUBBER

A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I WENT OUT TO BOWLING HEADQUARTERS
TO TAKE A COURSE  AND A TOUR OF THE TRAINING CENTER.
AFTER THE TOUR I WENT TO AN OLD BAR THAT HAD TWO LANES
IN THE BASEMENT. YOU JUST TOLD THE BARKEEP THAT YOU WANTED TO
BOWL AND HE WOULD SEND YOU DOWNSTAIRS TO THE CENTER.
THE SHOES WERE PILED UP IN A CORNER HE TOLD US GOOD LUCK
FINDING A MATCHING PAIR.
IT WAS A RIOT.
THERE ARE STILL A FEW CENTERS LIKE THAT OUT IN GREENDALE WIS.

the dance when the pins flew, but have only seen auto pin setters for 10

Thursday night, I was working on staying down at the line.  Started
out using my El Nino.  Shot 201 with 2 opens.  223 won the money.  2nd
game, I switched to my Jigsaw, and couldn't make a spare. whiffed a 4,
struck, whiffed a 10, 6-bagger, washout in the tenth - open, 211.  243
won the money.  Started out the 3rd game with a strike.  I came off
the approach saying, "I can't make a spare, so I gotta keep striking!"
  Repeat through the fifth frame.  In the sixth, I was off balance
during my approach.  Felt it in the second step(I stepped to the left
for some reason), but was to stupid to stop and reset.  Pulled it for
an 8-count.  Made the spare - "Hey, first spare in a game and a half!"
  After the sixth frame I walked down the lanes and saw a guy finish
with 260(spare, 8-bagger, 0-/, strike).  I knew I could still beat
him.  I started to tell him that, but decided not to be cocky.  I
struck in the 7th and 8th.  8th frame, the ball felt weird on my hand,
but I didn't reset(2nd dumb mistake in the game).  Pulled the shot and
left a 6pin.  Spared it, but now I can only shoot 256.  I ended up
finishing with 244, and 656 total(703 won the money).  So, I didn't
win any money, and we only won the 2nd game.
So close...

10-4-82 and want to do it again!

It has done my memory good to hear a lot of you learned scoring from the old
style plastic sheets and the grease pen. I too learned how to score with my mom
when I was young and watching my dad bowl. I still have the plastic sheet of my
1st 300. Even tho the auto scorers are nice, I sure miss those days.

be? Watch an old bowling match with pin boys. Notice the pin action, notice the
fact that the ball is "curving" perhaps 10 boards max. They were HARD RUBBER

Regarding bowling lanes, I remember we had a nice little bowling center (that
sounds a little big, this one had 15 lanes at best) that must have  had pin boys
as it was from the 50's. I remember going there when I was very young and then
it closed. What a shame. I would love to find out more about it... I was
thinking about posting a message in the town web site looking for any
information that people could provide.

A line or two about my bowling lately. I'm happy about how I am progressing and
learning/relearning this game. I will take a few lessons with that pro that
helped me. He said there are many things we could try and implement. I will give
him a try, I believe he is right. He told me that with my style and dedication,
I should average much higher than I do... We'll see.

I'm having next week off but after that I will start to practice more (the
practice alone on Wednesday did a world of good) and have a few lessons.

oh, ok. Antoine you have to remember I didn't step foot into a bowling alley for
30 years after dropping out in 1984.

I kinda miss keeping score to tell you the truth. You still have to watch them
though, last night I had a spare, strike, strike, but then looked at the screen
and found that the 3rd frame I had a split and looking down the alley it was in
the 2nd frame position, even after having a strike!

I remember in my only sanctioned 800, I had a 299 and a 279 and then I was
like...am I going to do it? I ended up with a 244. I still have the overhead
projector (those of us old enough to remember that way of keeping score..)
