Hello everyone,
I wanted to share this story with you.
I got asked to sub last night and there were a lot of high scores.
A friend of mine was bowling next to us and shot 300-258-258 for an 816.
It was great!
There were like 4 or 5 258 games shot on that pair of lanes last night.

I was shooting pretty well too. I started with a 265 and 257... not wanting to
do the math so I wouldn't think about
if I could shot 800 or not, I told myself I needed 300 and to just keep shooting
like I had been.
Well, I strung the first 8, then 10 pin. At this point after sparing the ten
pin, again not wanting to do the math, I told myself
just to finish out and have a good series while another guy came up and said,
you had a chance at 800 didn't you, sounding as if I had missed it.
I still didn't know I had a chance at 800 and didn't want to think about it even
though I was hoping in the back of my mind.
Well, I needed 2 strikes and a 9 count for a 278 game and 800 series... again,
not knowing this I just went up there and made shots... X X then
I got it a little wide, came up high for an 8 count and the crowd behind me goes
nuts, awe one more pin!!!
Yep, shot 277 for a 799 :(
I was a bit upset for a while, but since I hadn't thrown all great shots, got
away with some bad ones, I felt pretty good about shooting what I did.
I shot 800 before, but realizing I was so close, blowing it and didn't even know
it, I found it tough to swallow.

On a happier note, I got the strike pot ticket, threw the strike and won $275!
We decided to press our luck and try for a 50/50 ticket raffle... missed it by
one also! lol

Well, thanks for reading, hope everyone is bowling well.

Take care,
Yuma

Hi all,

I'm curious, do any of you remember pin boys? How about how the lanes used to
be? Watch an old bowling match with pin boys. Notice the pin action, notice the
fact that the ball is "curving" perhaps 10 boards max. They were HARD RUBBER
then...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36F--r2ra_M&feature=PlayList&p=CFF239223EE28F2C&i\
ndex=0&playnext=1

He's still going today!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJfDaFoNyNk

Regarding bowling lanes, I remember we had a nice little bowling center (that
sounds a little big, this one had 15 lanes at best) that must have had pin boys
as it was from the 50's. I remember going there when I was very young and then
it closed. What a shame. I would love to find out more about it... I was
thinking about posting a message in the town web site looking for any
information that people could provide.

A line or two about my bowling lately. I'm happy about how I am progressing and
learning/relearning this game. I will take a few lessons with that pro that
helped me. He said there are many things we could try and implement. I will give
him a try, I believe he is right. He told me that with my style and dedication,
I should average much higher than I do... We'll see.

I'm having next week off but after that I will start to practice more (the
practice alone on Wednesday did a world of good) and have a few lessons.

Cheers
Gary

PS, and yeah, I like all kinds of history, bowling included and love to write
about it...

I would keep score during the early session, and the bowlers would

Gary,

That was my thing on Friday nights when I was a teenager. Going to the bowling
center with my parents and keeping score, I rather enjoyed it. I did
that for a couple of years before I got serious about bowling and starting
making plans and setting goals.

oh, ok. Antoine you have to remember I didn't step foot into a bowling alley for
30 years after dropping out in 1984.

I kinda miss keeping score to tell you the truth. You still have to watch them
though, last night I had a spare, strike, strike, but then looked at the screen
and found that the 3rd frame I had a split and looking down the alley it was in
the 2nd frame position, even after having a strike!

Nah, he could have just been euphoric about the 300, and had
concentration fail him. Or, people could have been buying drinks, and
he imbibed too much.

Carl,

I can remember a similar issue, just with a cup of coke. And in the scramble of
trying to clean up the mess before it got on someones shoes, the plastic sheet
was dried by wiping it and there the scores were on the back of those
papertowels.

I remember both overhead and score sheets. Does that bring back memories. I
recall one hotly contested match with the overhead scores and the plastic sheets
when someone spilled their coffee and wiped out most of the scores. Big argument
about what the scores were. Ended up having to bowl that game over again. LOL.

It is meant to be 2 separate positions, but as you said, the smaller leagues
tend to lump them both together. On my Tuesday night league, I am the Secretary
and Treasurer along with acting as the president making all of the decisions for
the league when issues arise.

When I first started league bowling the position of secretary/treasurer was
held by one person. Now it seems, with the exception of very small leagues,
the position is held by two people one as secretary and one as treasurer.
Is it two separate positions in everyone leagues now?

For me the things that make a secretary treasure earn their money is the
beginning of the season and the end of the season.

Beginning - You have to call all the team captains, help gather players, and
organize the fall meeting.
First night of bowling, you have to handle all the questions, handle all the
USBC cards.
First weeks of bowling you have to get all the sanction paperwork done and any
paperwork the house wants.
Prize fund calculated and handed to the President or prize committee.

Week to week is a lot easier with the advent of computers and software
specifically for league secretaries. I use a spreadsheet for the money aspect
though. I like to have the spreadsheet look just like the envelope. I can
print a teams money sheet out and they can compare it to what they've written on
the envelope directly.

Mid Season averages are pretty simple. The software takes care of that.
During the season the awards. I typically don't start until after 7 weeks
unless someone does something very unusual.

End of season - Prize fund, dividing out and breaking it down by number of team
members. Arranging banquet place and time. (sometimes a league will have a
banquet committee).

End of season wrap up of money, printouts for local association.

Whether I have 12 teams or even 24 teams, while it may take a bit longer to do
everything each week, I don't think it would be much more difficult.

Nope - the tape was below the surface, so that wasn't a problem. It
seems that I've *always* had thumb problems(knuckling, ripped skin,
etc). *One* time I was able to have a drilling that I didn't need
tape, nu-skin, or anything. Unfortunately, my car was stolen with all
my equipment in it.

Well, I guess I'll keep searching. Maybe I'll go back to the nu-skin
and patch, as that seemed to be the thinnest solution. The problem
there was that my skin would crack from the CA glue.

Our leagues all have separate officers. I *do* know a lady who does
both jobs in her league, though. The house has 24 lanes, but I don't
know if that league uses all lanes. They have at *least* 16 teams.
I've done each job(separately) before, and I don't think I ever want
to do either one again..<g>

stays on your hand, even on the down swing. BINGO! During my practice, I
(carefully mind you) tried to have a swing where I didn't hold on to the ball ,
but to have the ball fit so well that very little or no effort was used to keep
it on my hand... again, BINGO! Every...and I mean, EVERY shot that I relaxed I
had a strike if I hit the pocket. Remember, hitting a mark has never been hard
for me... I was getting the best pin action...
   >

A friend of mine came out to watch us bowl Tuesday night. He said I
was dropping the ball at the foul line. He suggested that I put tape
in the back of the thumbhole. After a couple more shots he told me to
add another piece. He later told me to add another piece, but I
resisted until late in the third game. I had 161, 205, 199. The
problem with adding the tape is that I feel like I'll hang up in the
ball. He says that the feel while holding the ball and testing the
fit is a lot different than having that 16lbs at the bottom of the
downswing, and the ball WILL come off. I never got comfortable with
   all the tape.
I don't know what to do. If the hole is snug enough to hold the ball,
then the skin gets ripped off the back of my thumb. I used to use
nu-skin and a patch, but that would occasionally cause problems as
well. I've started using a fabric-type tape on my thumb, which John
says is causing the ball to just fall off my hand because it's slick.
Plus, I have to have the thumbhole a little larger to accomodate the
tape. Sounds like a no-win situation at the moment, so I need to
   figure something out...

You might want to talk to a coach as well. Talk to your local pro shop operator
too, he can give you some advise. If you are in the Houston TX area I know a
coach or two and a real good ball driller.

In our league it is only one person. Of course, we only have 12 teams...
maybe bigger leagues have decided to share the work load a bit?

Hi all,

Last night before league, I had the chance to practice for an hour! Seems as
though one of the leagues team on the lanes to the right of ours, mostly
prebowled so the people that did bowl were done fast. I had two lanes, to my
self and it was quality time. You see, I bowl usually with one of my employees
who is ADHD and usually I'm distracted. I wasn't last night.

I adjusted the tape in the thumb a little and then went at it. Now, I must say,
yesterday afternoon during break, I watched an Earl Anthony/ Mark Roth match on
Utube. It was interesting because Bo Burton mentioned a fact I had forgotten and
that was when the ball fits perfectly you DON'T grip it but it stays on your
hand, even on the down swing. BINGO! During my practice, I (carefully mind you)
tried to have a swing where I didn't hold on to the ball , but to have the ball
fit so well that very little or no effort was used to keep it on my hand...
again, BINGO! Every...and I mean, EVERY shot that I relaxed I had a strike if I
hit the pocket. Remember, hitting a mark has never been hard for me... I was
getting the best pin action...

Now onto the league play. I had a 225 first game, then a 238, then a 215 for a
678 series. (Had a 7-9 the 9th frame... not sure what happened there but I
didn't throw the ball all that great...) I made sure to relax and just let it
rip (the ball that is). I had two opens, a 5-7 the first frame; what a ball that
was! I also had that 7-9 in the third game. I made all my seven pins (perhaps
5-6 of them) and all other spares. With the balls fitting better, I find making
the spares are more consistent too...

The Pro-shop guy was bowling on the other team. We had quite a chat. He was very
complimentary of my style and game. I won't go into all the things we talked
about, but I found myself growing very fond of him. What a nice guy, very
knowledgeable, and a sharp eye. He gave me some pointers while bowling, which I
thought was nice. I will take a few lessons with him as I can see he can help
me.

Last night was very big to me relearning more about this game after being away
so long. I did have a "news flash" when I relaxed the hand in the well fitting
ball; I remembered bowling with "the touch" years ago. What I mean was relaxing
in the ball and making minor changes which resulted in carrying the pins
better...

What do you think you are doing wrong? Most of the times I've seen two things:
Timing and head positioning during the approach and even more importantly at the
point of release. Just last night one of the guys in our Wednesday league was
doing horribly. I told him I would watch him throw a ball or two but before that
I said it was probably timing or not keeping his head down. He came up and
thanked me before I watched him as I missed his next ball. That was most of the
problem other than thumb issues. His thumb was swelling for some reason. I told
him my saga (which there is a part two in a few minutes) with the big thumb hole
and the chance of removing tape from it...

He did better but not as good as usual after him minding the timing and keeping
the head down.

Perhaps you can watch a video of yourself? Perhaps you can have someone watch
you like a good bowler or perhaps a pro?

Hope this helps
Gary

oh, ok. Antoine you have to remember I didn't step foot into a bowling alley for
30 years after dropping out in 1984.

I kinda miss keeping score to tell you the truth. You still have to watch them
though, last night I had a spare, strike, strike, but then looked at the screen
and found that the 3rd frame I had a split and looking down the alley it was in
the 2nd frame position, even after having a strike!

projector (those of us old enough to remember that way of keeping score..)
sheets from the games. I remember getting a bit "worried" in the third game.

Nah, he could have just been euphoric about the 300, and had
concentration fail him. Or, people could have been buying drinks, and
he imbibed too much.

I've been a 2 league bowler for over 30 years but I have tanked all this year. I
have been a 190 ave bowler for the past 10 years but right now I'm 160 in one
and 155 in the other. My timing is off and my spare shooting has gone to heck. I
am in need of some tips or pointers to get me out of this funk!

I still have the overhead sheet from my 300, even though it was an
unsanctioned league...

You ought to try going 297, 300 and not shooting 800. I did that back in 98,
shot a lousy 179 the last game. It aint as easy as it sounds, trust me.
