Ahh, yes. More work from Jay Butters.

Seems to me that guy is the gun when it comes to natural elbows. Please feel free to pass along my compliments!

I bet you're right about NE's being labour intensive. I've never tried making one but anyone can see at a glance that it's quite a process. Doubt I'd have the patience.

Glenn.

P.S: Hope the wind settles down for you Adam :)

Hey Glenn,

I had better make sure everyone is clear about this !

The natural elbows in my picture folder were made by my good friend Jay Butters! (The master). Not me I'm afraid.

I will let him know your comments when I see him next week. I do have several blanks that Jay has given me over the years, but one thing I have found out - natural elbows require more work and time than virtually any other type of boomerang making. I didn't even know sandpaper went over 2000 grit until I saw Jay doing these.

Well worth the effort though - I am looking up at my wall now looking at a Laburnum Voyager and Oak Fuzzy. They are great !

Welcome to the group, Iwan :)

I joined Boom Talk just a few years ago, and the advice I have received from the other members has been invaluable. No doubt you'll have a similar experience.

And a tip of the hat to Adam and his beautiful natural elbow tribladers. Great work Adam, very impressive.

Glenn.

Hello there!

Like the subject says: let me introduce myself!
My name is Iwan Tol (38) and I'm from the Netherlands (or Holland, as you wish).
I started the sport back in 1988 when I was in the US as a foreign exchange student in Groton, MA. I love making them as much as throwing them and have made around 30-40 boomerangs for all competition events. Unfortunately after a while I got busy doing other things and missing 'partners in crime' here in Holland didn't help either. On and off throwing them a bit, but that was it...
The last months (or even longer) it started to itch again badly, and I am getting into it again. Created some workspace upstairs and am ready to start making (and throwing) boomerangs again.

I was happily surprised to find out that there is quite a bit of information on the internet, from all over the world and think it's great how communities like this are internationally oriented! Always nice to see that there's a place with knowledge where you can turn to!
That leads me to a question. Allthough a lot of info can be found on the net, as of yet I haven't found an elaborate description of how to make boomerangs out of natural elbows. (Or are the 'rangs themselves called Natural Elbows?). Of course I'm talking about the process of preparing the wood, and not the general 'howto'... Anybody willing to share information or post a link to some info?

Also the last week or so I have visited quite some enthusiasts' websites, including some of yours in this group! Great sites and pictures: thanks for sharing!!

Sincerely,

- Iwan -

P.S. Group owner: I'm not familiar with Yahoo Groups. I could not find a 'Newbie' or 'Introduction' section, so please forgive me if I posted in the wrong section!

Nice work Graham.

I especially like the idea of painting the Master Designs logo on Kendall's shirt, that's a nice touch.

And the other art works on that page are good too. I like the ocarinas, and the way you stylized the self portraits.

Glenn.

Greg;
Nice work.  Look like they will do exactly what they are internded to do-let kids have fun throwing booms and you don't have to bother with telling them about dihedral-at this time.  Just grab a boom and toss it.  Built in dihedral might also retard the tendency to throw with stick backwards.  "Good job"

Hello Ivan and much welcome here! Allways great with more members to the community.
I have quite little experiense with natural elbows and working with wet wood.
Although i managed a few months ago to make a couple of naturals from an apple tree branch i our garden.
The name natural elbow comes from the structure of the wood, or lets say the branch is naturally bent in a way that it suites for boomerang shapes. Then it's considered a natural elbow, because it resembles the elbow section of a boomerang.
Anyway, I had access to a large heavy duty bandsaw and was able to slice some pieces from that branch.
Like Gary mentioned its neccesary to cut them thicker i did about 10 mm.
Then i took dry sawdust and dust from the planers in a large plastic bag.
I then buried the newly cut and wet blanks in the bag and had to wait for about a month or so.
Unfortunately 2 blanks got too warped but another 2 stayed reanonably flat to be finished as boomerangs.
I have been told that the dry dust and woodchips help draw the humidity from the wood, so drying time is much faster than the conventional way, but the old fashioned way i believe is a better way and less likely to ruin the wood as it dries.
Why hurry huh?
I'll attach a picture of it.and i hope it is of some help.
Have a really nice day Iwan.
Hasse

Thanks guys!

Great replies! I checked out the links and one leads to another as you know. Still bits and pieces of the big picture about Natural Elbows, but I'm getting there. As with everything in life, you just have to do it: start to make one and find out the rest. Is also part of the fun!
Allthough, I guess before I start my first one (considering the drying time), it'll be next Christmas. Next next Christmas that is... ;-)

Of course I looked at the new pictures! Looks fabulous! After using plywood all the time, the Natural Elbows look astonishing. I will post some pictures as well, allthough my collection is not that impressive. I started in 1988 with the Pro-Fly I got from Eric darnell and made my first 'rangs of the same model out of wood. Then found other existing models. You know the drill: To make different variants of what you have and so on... Give me some time and I will post some pics sooner than later.

Best regards,

Hi Iwan,

Perfect place to post.  Great questions.  Thanks for the introduction.

There are not a lot of posts on natural elbows, probably because of the difficulty in finding and curing good pieces for booms.

The ancient’s only used natural elbows because they couldn’t afford the shipping on aircraft grade plywood.

So many times I’ve driven by large mounds of trees knocked down to make a building or road and wished I had the time, (and a saw) to stop and look for good candidates.  Life is too short to rush everywhere.  I really do need to make the time to stop and smell the elbows.

Please shoot some pics and upload them to the group.  We love pictures.

Hi,

Normally I avoid these. However, with the link to quick reactions, I wonder if our years of boomerang throwing can give us unusally high scores?

The object of the game is to move the red block around without getting hit by the blue blocks or touching the black walls.

If you can go longer than 18 seconds you are phenomenal. It's been said that the US Air Force uses this for fighter pilots. They are expected to go for at least 2 minutes.

I got 18.5 secs after about 5 minutes...

Kind Regards,

Adam

Hi Iwan,

I never got round to adding the natural elbows section to the BBS website. Ollie
is right though, Jay would definately be the one to advise you. In the meantime
though, and for everyone elses benefit, I will load into the photos section some
stuff I have, which you should be able to follow reasonably well.

The other best natural elbow makers are undoubtedly Ekhard (Germany) and
Stanilaus ( Germany )Anyway, Jay will tell you all this !

Adam

We all know about Chet Snouffer's fire.

Today, I heard from a customer of 20yrs ago...he lost all his rangs in a house fire(think back to some of the great rangs avail. 20 yrs ago...ugh(:

your insurance may cover replace value, but will not cover collector value...unless you have insured your rangs, or whatever special items you have-on special coverage policy.

with digital cameras avail. to most of us...take pics of your collection(with date stamp on). save to cd/dvd. a safe place or several. yes, make several copies.

Also, this is the time of year many of us won't be throwing our rangs, until Spring.

Proper storage of your wood rangs can keep them from warping.

if your home is heated, the air will be dry. your wood rangs can dry out and warp.

store your rangs in unheated area(outbiilding, basement, so forth) is my suggestion.

Sincerely,

Hi Iwan!!!  Welcome to the club!!!  In answer to your question about natural elbows,  I have made many.  First, when you pick a Natural elbow you need to cut it extra long.  This is because as it dries, it will split on the ends.  I use bees wax on the ends to retard the moisture loss.  I use a moisture meter to determine when the wood is dry enough to cut into boomerang blanks.  I like about 7% moisture content.  It takes a very long time to dry these out.  The rule of thumb is about 1 year per inch diameter.  I have a big industrial bandsaw with a 1 and a half inch resaw blade to slice the elbow like bacon.  I cut them extra thick, and then run them through my Delta thickness sanding center, which has a big drum sander to flatten out the boom blanks.

There are many great natural elbow makers in the world.  John Flynn and Eric Darnell in the USA, Jay Bitters of the UK, and Eckardt Marwick of Germany.  I hope this helps.   Many Happy Returns,  Gary Broadbent, Canton, Ohio USA

Nice video Greg.

Very versatile boomerangs there, great variation in distances. You've given me food for thought as I'm planning to make some rangs for my nine year old niece to throw, maybe a small balsa wood quad would work for her. I like the idea of a ring made of heavier timber in the centre. From what you've seen, does that type of rang suit kids better, or should I just go for a cross-stick set up?

Glenn.

Hi rangsters ,
I have been rethinking my adult boomerangs .I have tried to reinterpret some of my adult rangs into kid versions . I have come into a combination that I haven't seen before .I have developed finger catch balsa quads and 5 bladers . This combination of mixing 1/8th birch rings with balsa blades has yielded good results .This boomerang is versatile from 20 foot flights to 80 foot flights . The triblades may work as well I haven't explored that enough yet .
Unfortunately I lost part of this demo video by taping over a part I meant to save .I walked down my street throwing , illustrating you could use these in a parade .That footage was lost and only the warm up remained . The real footage showed me going down my street and back about 50 feet while making short flights over and over .
A note on construction . These blades are glued to the ring with hot glue gun .The wings will droop while cooling , so shimmy up the blade tips with something equal or greater than 1/8th tall .This will in effect GLUE in a subtle dihedral .It may not be necessary but it IS a factor .I ruined my first attempt because I let two of my blades droop unknowingly .After that I shimmied (rested the wing tip on an elevating scrap wood) . This may be my best contribution to the rang world yet .It may not be tough enough for novice newbies but an intermediate rang ? Blade replacement is easy because they melt off with a hot knife (cuts through glue). This may improve my scout lessons . As a demo rang its so lightweight to be safer than a standard rang in the event of mishaps / close calls .
Anybody seen rangs like this before?
Greg C .

Here's another video .Labeling a balsa wood boomerang fast and mean reminds me
of the Gary Larson cartoon of the Evil butterfly collector (shown in black with
his butterfly net and jar ) . The irony is that its too much of a contradiction
to exist .This crosstick broken quad was an experiment .The wings are all on the
same plane .The hub is glued with two rectangular end caps . Is that essential ?
I dont know .I weighted it extra heavy one windy day and found it was a good
warm up demo rang .Previously I had ignored it as just a kidy rang that was
unweighted or weighted lightly .

Hi Chriss ,
the triblade bats throw with a mere flick of roughly 4mph .Any kid can throw
these but it must be stressed to them to throw it softer rather than harder
.They can come back too fast if thrown too hard which is often the problem with
fired up boys .My new balsa finger catch quad rangs may be a better choice
.Those they can throw hard without much worry .Replacement wings reglue very
easily .I'll have both in my future lessons. Its good to have some variety . The
balsa V rangs are hard for them to master 45 degree layover as brand new
throwers .They do have the softest return however .Depends on the age of the
boys .Sadly Ive been way too bussy at my last 2 events to video kids throwing
these .I can sell you either model .Write me at home .
