Thank you for wanting to be a part of BoomerangTalk. Please take the time to
read and follow these simple guidelines - they should help us to all have a more
enjoyable experience on this forum.
» Be POSITIVE when you post to this forum. When you write a message, re-read
it to yourself, and/or have someone else read it if you think ANYONE may become
angry after reading your message. You may think you have a good case, or think
you have worded your message clearly, but writing and talking are two completely
different forms of communication.
» If a post makes you angry, don't reply to it! Send your moderator(s) a
message about it and if action is necessary we will take it. Let us be the "bad
guys" so your reputation is not called into question. Sometimes people
understand things in a different light. You or they may change their opinion
over time. Words are hard to take back once they are posted.
» Please remember to check the subject line of your message. While some of us
read every message on the board, others may want to know what the message is
really about before reading it. If the thread subject changes, the subject line
should change, too.
» Take some time to clean-up replies. There are people who get Daily Digests
of this forum. Replies which have included extensive previous messages make it
very difficult for the Digest reader to follow the message. They get several
copies and it becomes tedious for them to wade through all the multiple copies.
» This is not a USBA forum. If you want to recommend changes to the USBA,
please join USBA_info and post your suggestions there. If they fall on deaf
ears at that forum, nothing said here will make a difference there, either.
» If you have a beef with someone, please contact them directly before
informing the forum about your disagreement. Sometimes we want to "set the
record straight" if someone is being a knucklehead. If you have a problem with
another member, please contact one of the moderators and we will try to resolve
the issue.

Nice to see you here. It's Rob Van Elven from Sidney, Australia.

Hey Guys, Tell me what you think about Don's Ideas on Inertia. Gary
---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Hi Gary,July 27,2007
You mentioned that INERTIA is a very difficult concept to understand. I came up with what I think might be a of presenting inertia by relating it to daily life.
INERTIA and Newton’s 1st law of motion.
The 1st law identifies the three kinds of motion that an object might doing.
(a). An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
(b). An object in motion tends to stay in motion at a uniform speed and in a straight line.
(c). An object under the influence of an EXTERNAL UNBALANCED force will change its direction of motion or change its speed.
The key word here is the word, EXTERNAL or some texts refer to it as an OUTSIDE force. The word external indicates the force comes from something other than the object itself or outside of itself. The object only transfers the force fromsome other object or energy source.
EXAMPLES:
(a). A (a). A person sitting on a swing. The person has weight (pushing down on the swing seat) only because gravity of the earth (an external force) causes the person to have weight. The other part of the picture is the ropes holding the swing seat up. The ropes are supported by the tree branch (an external force).
(b). A car going around a curve and the door pushing against the person, but the person inside has the feeling of pushing against the door. The car door would not be able to push if the car was not supported by the wheels and the road. If the road were icy, there would be NO UNBALANCED EXTERNAL support and the car would go straight (not pushing against the person). The person (a non-supported object) would be unaffected by the actions of the car.
(c). A person holding up a ball then dropping it. While the ball is being held, the upward force of the hand just equals the downward pull of gravity. These are equal and opposite EXTERNAL forces. If the hand lets go of the ball, the external force of gravity is still acting on the ball but the external force of the hand is gone. There is no external force acting on the ball. The only balancing “force†is the non-external “force†called INERTIA.
In the swing example, the person would be acted upon equally by both the pull upward by the ropes and downward pull of gravity. These are both EXTERNAL forces which are balanced, so the person goes nowhere in agreement with the first and/or second parts of Newton’s 1st law and the first part of the 3rd law.
In the car example, the car is supported by the EXTERNAL FORCE of the road but the person would not be supported (no external force) and only the RESISTANCE or REACTION to the applied external force of the door. This is in agreement with the third part of Newton’s 1st law (unless acted upon by and unbalanced external force). There is nothing in the 3rd law to explain how and why acceleration of objects takes place.
Every object has mass. The speed and/or direction of an object can only be changed if an UNBALANCED EXTERNAL force is applied. If the external forces are balanced, no change in motion will take place. The object will be stationary or in uniform straight-line motion. Only when an external force is opposed (BALANCED) by the NON-EXTERNAL FORCE of INERTIA will a change in motion take place.
INERTIA is sometimes referred to as a “fictitious†force because it is not ransferring force (supported by) from another object or energy source. All matter has a natural resistance to being “forced†to change speed (linear acceleration) and/or change direction (angular acceleration). This resistance (inertial resistance) does not depend on the support of other objects.
Whenever the motion of an object changes, the applied exterior force is opposed by inertia.
EXAMPLES:
(a). A bat hitting a ball or (b). two airplanes colliding in mid air. When a bat hits a ball, both the bat and the ball are unsupported (discounting the batters hand at the time of impact). Some of the inertial momentum foreword of the bat is transferred to the ball and all of the foreword momentum of the ball is transferred to the bat. Each of these momentums is EXTERNAL to the other object and are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. The ball and the bat each resist (inertial resistance) tobeing decelerated and the ball being accelerated in the opposite direction. The inertial resistance of each object is just equal and opposite to the lost inertial momentum of the opposing object. These are double ACTION and REACTION events and is part of Newton’s 3rd law..
Nothing in the 3rd law corresponds to the 2nd law (F = ma). This law shows the relationship of an active supported external force to an equivalent mass times acceleration. Mass times acceleration is another way of indicating inertia, the “fictitious†force.

An ez way make a Bat-Rang:
take an omega,
as a guide,
draw an triangle at the elbow.
the top of the triangle is on the outer edge of the elbow.
then draw circles along the legs of the triangle,
cut those circles out.
make it look"batty".
paint black, go throw...but only during daylight:)
Rich, The B-Man.
Peter ,
look up my name and the word bat boomerang , boomerangs or batarangs in
a google search .You will find the photos or videos easily .

The type of sting you use is important to the sound of the bullroarer. I have used artificial sinew on one I have made and it seems to work well. You can use a small stick for a handle so the sting does not cut into your fingers. Also the hole on the bullroarer needs to exactly in the center so the bullroarer hangs straight and can spin without fluttering.
General rules for making a bullroarer from"Primative Technology A Book of Earth Skills"
- use heavy dense wood
- distal end is thicker than proximal end
- proximal half should taper in thickness from the center to the thinnest section at the base
- center-line and margins should be straight as an arrow
- the bevel from edge to midpoint should be equal at all points
- overall shape of 3 or 4 to 1 (length to width) ratio is generally best
Use a lightning killed tree to take advantage of the magic form the sky as some primitive people did.

Good question
It's always nice to have a new boom in your bag. I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be a swap webpage / site / forum only auctions and sales sites.
A selling stall has been arranged for the Euro competition where competitors can display any boomerangs they wish to sell. This is being run I believe by Fox LMI the excellent french rangsmiths along with their own impressive range.
I would imagine gauging the merits of a swap would be difficult. I know at last years Trefew I purchased two boomerangs from Manuel Schutz a carbon composite 3 blade MTA (13-14 grams !!!) and a LD voyger .The quality of the finished boomerang and the performance would take some matching.
A very good topic of discussion wether trades are available or not.

scraps can be very useful Using a boomerang/Australian theme when I first started workshops with a local youth group before having the children carve their own boomerangs some of the less proficient children practiced the rasping / filing making bullroarers from the scraps.
I still don't know how to make a very loud roarer or is it in the swinging action that you can improve that?
a bit off topic i know but it kept the children happy

The local library was featuring Australian-theme, children's books.
I offered them the use of some of my Aboriginal art, and the next thing I
knew I was asked to do a program.
As part of the "craft aspect" of the weekly program, the kids got to make
paper boomerangs.
I gave the library a stock of cardboard rangs for the kids to cut out.
The kids started cutting out the rangs, some were really a mess:); for
some reason(perhaps the 'little kid in me'), I started cutting one out and
realized that the best way was to cut out the triangle shape area between
each pair of wings.
Then it dawned on me that I could cut mini rangs from each of the corners of
the triangle scraps....making many tiny finger-flick rangs.
Perhaps, I was inspired by the spirit of Bro. Brian Thomas, who cut mins out
of old playing cards...anytime he'd write me, there were always some minis
with his letters.
The first one I made worked great...some of the older kids were quick to try
their hand at making the minis.
The kids got to throw boomerangs(indoors) and learned that scraps can be
useful:)

off topic kind'a sort'a. i posted a photos in the first bearboomerang photo ablum of some knifes i made from some cut off ends of some of the strip-lam i have around here.
these knifes are used for work out in class and have no real edge on them and are pretty much harmless.
again these are just for working out and display, NOT real knifes.
i have even see one of my boom students take some of the cut offs and made ear-rings for his wife.
