Define "modern". Georgi's "Boomerang Puzzle" lists a formal
competition with the Brist cross-sticks in 1904.

Virtually all of them. The codification into lots of formal events
really only started in the 1960s (and most of the events then are no
longer part of competition -- eg. consecutive catch).

Speaking for Australia, we first decided our National Champion by a
mixture of event in 1988 (previously only Aussie Round, or its
predecessor, counted), and it was only in 1995 that multi-blade rangs
were allowed, and that the six current events (minus the Doubling
part of Trick Catch) were adopted.
