Subject: Boomer Shooter launches campaign for U.S. Congress.

For those of you that were at the Boomer Shoot on Saturday and/or Sunday
2002 or on Sunday of 2001 -- you may have noticed Stephanie Sailor
(http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/Help03.jpg). Just this week she launched
her website for her campaign for U.S. Congress. Her campaign is very
unique. It will be run on ZERO dollars. All donations will go to charity.
Interested yet? Perhaps just confused... Read the following to make sense
of it all and why I think it might be of interest to you.

Hello Gun Owner,

If you’d like to be part of the most unique campaign in U.S. political
history, please read on!

Stephanie Sailor, Libertarian Candidate for U.S. Congress, D-9, Illinois,
is not the everyday candidate. She’s young, female, and pro-gun. Stephanie
is a certified firearms instructor and outspoken defender of gun rights,
having appeared in numerous media venues across the country. With your
help, we can generate even more media coverage for gun rights via her
unconventional campaign.

Stephanie’s campaign is avant-garde in several ways. It:

--is purely a cyber campaign of ones and zeroes

--utilizes guerilla marketing tactics to sell campaign messages in any way
possible. For example, even her name will appear on the ballot as an
advertisement:
STEPHANIE "VS. THE MACHINE" SAILOR

--is run on $0, no contributions accepted

--is a charity fundraiser. Rather than spending campaign contributions on
political fluff and fanfare, Stephanie is redirecting all funds to 8
different charitable causes, including:

==KeepAndBearArms.com: more than just gun rights==
Fervent defender of gun rights, KABA.com houses the world's largest online
collection of successful firearms self-defense stories that typically never
appear in the mainstream news.
http://www.KeepAndBearArms.com

==Self-Defense Fund: for those who can't rely on 911==
Provides free self-defense, gun safety, and handgun training classes to
survivors of violent crime or domestic violence (male or female).

To view the list of other causes, click here:
http://sailorvsthemachine.com/charity.htm#causes

We are writing to graciously request that you contribute to the Sailor 2002
Campaign. You need not be a Libertarian to donate since every single cent
of your contribution will be redirected to charitable causes. As Stephanie
likes to say, "People before politicians."

If you pledge money to the Sailor 2002 Campaign, your name will appear on
the donors page (your exact monetary contribution will *not* appear next to
your name):
http://sailorvsthemachine.com/donors.htm
....and you will go down in campaign history!

The more pledges we receive, the more excitement. More excitement means
more interest. More interest means more media coverage. More media coverage
means more pro-gun discussions in the news, which is the exact ammunition
needed for defending gun rights.

-->Pledging is fast and easy. Simply send an email, including your name and
pledge amount to:
pledge@...

Your name will then be added to the donors page. Shortly thereafter, the
Sailor 2002 Campaign will contact you, providing details on how to make
your online payment.

Whether it’s $10, $100, or $1,000+ -- any contribution will be graciously
appreciated. If you are unable to make a pledge, you can still contribute
to the cause by forwarding this message to interested citizens.

Thank you for taking part in the most unique political campaign in election
history!

Sincerely,
==Sailor for Congress 2002 Campaign==

I'm contemplating setting up a new business -- Boomer Shoot Adventures.
This is something completely different from the Palouse Practical Shooters
Boomer Shoot that most of you have attended. These will be prepackaged or
custom designed "adventures" people would take in small groups. These would
be much higher in price. Probably on the order of $150 to $300 per person.
Some adventures are tailored for people who have never touched a gun before,
other adventures are for the most experienced long range shooters. The
locations for these adventures would vary. I have some places in mind but
haven't confirmed their availability yet. It will be appropriate for the
adventure however -- example: for the novice shooter it would be from a
covered shooting area with solid bench rests.

I have set up a web site for exploring this idea: http://www.boomershoot.com
(not .org -- that is for the PPS Boomer Shoot). Please let me know what you
think -- would you be interested in such an adventure? If you could tailor
your own adventure what would it be like? How much would you pay for one of
these adventures? What "value added" things should be included? I'm
thinking in most cases at least one meal, and at least t-shirt or cap.

Thanks!

Some of you will get two copies of this again. Sorry. There is no easy way
for me to prevent that and still get this message to everyone. It has to do
with the two different lists I have, one for announcements and one for
helpers and participants.

If you haven't looked at the pictures and stories from the last Boomer Shoot
in the past couple of weeks there have been some significant changes. I
have put up the last of the pictures. This includes several from Tim B. and
Scott S.

These pictures are basically everything I have including some (but not all)
duplicates. Please feel free to leave comments with the pictures. Click on
the thumbnails to get a larger picture and clicking on that larger picture
will get you a still larger picture (approximate 2000 x 3000 pixels) in most
cases. The large pictures are 2 to 4 megabytes in size so it will take a
long time to download via my ADSL line which the joehuffman.org server
resides on. It would be best if you view the large pictures very early in
the morning when the usage is lowest.

http://www.joehuffman.org/gallery/BoomerShoot2002

I don't think there are any pictures that have changed on BoomerShoot.org
recently, just additional stories and email I have received from
participants. If you have comments you don't mind sharing with others send
me an email and I'll post them. This server has lots of bandwidth so don't
worry about downloading large files from here:

This years Boomer Shoot is over. Pictures and stories at
http://www.boomershoot.org/2002/pictures.htm.

Thanks to Stephanie Sailor writing and distributing a press release we had
some reporters and a photographer show up this year. The Missoulian
(Missoula, Montana) article just showed up:

http://www.missoulian.com/display/inn_features/territory/territory01.txt

There are a few things wrong with it, like they still have me working for
Microsoft, but I can't complain. It's a positive article about shooting.

Newsweek (http://www.newsweek.com) also sent a writer -- all the way from
Chicago. As of the middle of last week when they finalized the photos they
wanted to buy from me they were planning to publish the article in this
weeks edition. If that article hits the stands and they include a link to
the web site the site may slow to a crawl. You might want to consider
viewing the pictures and things as soon as possible.

I just had two slots canceled and one anticipated entry failed to
materialize. This means there are three open slots for Friday.
Sunday is still full. If you and or anyone you know wants to shoot
on Friday have them call me at 208-301-4254.

I will pick up my email for the last time, until Sunday night, early
tomorrow morning. So call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Any spectators should know that the weather is looking a bit
marginal. Bring warm clothing and perhaps rain gear. The
participants should already know this.

Some of you will get two copies of this. I am sending it to both the
entries and the announcement list. Sorry for the duplication...

The Sunday waiting list is now at two slots. I expect that one and maybe
even both people will get in.

Friday still has 6 slots open, my guess is that it will fill up. If you
want to play with the rest of us -- from as far away as New Jersey,
Michigan, several people from California, and all over the Pacific Northwest
you better get your entry in soon. See
http://www.boomershoot.org/2002/blast.htm#Entry for details and an entry
form.

I believe there are still some slots open on Saturday for the Precision
Rifle Clinic, but you will have to check with Eugene for the final word on
that. See http://www.boomershoot.org/2002/clinic.htm for details and
contact addresses.

I ordered the t-shirts today. The price will be $15.00 each and they are
first-come, first-serve available at the range starting Friday morning. The
image will be what you see at the tope of the page
http://www.boomershoot.org/2002/blast.htm. They will be in both white and
in 'ash'.

I picked up what I believe was the last of materials I need for the shoot
today. The only real variable at this point is the weather. The snow is
hanging on a bit later than the last couple years but this years event is
scheduled for a bit later than the last two years too. I think it is going
to be okay.

I have made a special version of the exterior ballistics program "Modern
Ballistics" available to the people on this list. It is a demo version. It
expires the day after the Boomer Shoot, and it is restricted in the altitude
that it can simulate. It only can do simulations for 3000 feet above sea
level which is the same as the range for the Boomer Shoot.

To find out more about this program go to http://www.modernballistics.com.

To download the free demo -- download
http://www.modernballistics.com/release/boomershoot.zip

Unzip it into an empty directory and run 'setup.exe'.

It will tell you that your license is out of date or expired and ask if you
wish to update your license. Reply 'Yes'. It will require that you be
connected to the Internet. It will connect to the Modern Ballistics server
and verify that you have a valid license. Your license will need to be
verified every 10 days and will last until May 6th. The purchased license
will need to be verified every 28 days and last a total of one year.
Unfortunately I'm having some "difficulty" with the credit card processing
company (they don't like the restrictions on who I will sell to) and you
cannot purchase the program with your credit card at this time.

If you have questions, let me know.

Sunday is 100% full now. If you want to be on the waiting list send me some

and you will get a slot.

Friday is 60% full so this is your best bet if you want to attend.

If you have mailed your entry and haven't received an email confirmation yet
please contact me as soon as possible.

I'll be inspecting the site tomorrow -- which I expect to be either a swamp
or still have snow on it at this time of year. But I will find out if the
bridge foundation is still in place and if the magazine is ready for storing
targets. I expect everything is fine and it's "all systems go" for the
first weekend in May.

You may be getting two copies of this message. One is to the list of
entries and one is to the list of people on the announcement list. Sorry
about that. I need to make sure both groups got the info about the ammo for
sale on site.

The Sunday event is now 60% full. The Friday event is 40% full. This does
not include one entry for Sunday that was supposedly put in the mail
yesterday. Get your entries in soon if you want to play in May. If it
continues to fill at the present rate Sunday will fill by the end of March.
Friday will be filled by mid April.

If you would like to have ammo delivered to the site (particularly important
for people flying in) you should let me know right away. The dealer is
hesitant to order large quantities on speculation. If you can tell me that
you will definitely buy 100, 300 (whatever) rounds of some common ammo (say
.223, .308, 30.06, or .300 Win Mag) then he will bring it. If you need
something special ordered call them directly -- The Husky Sport Shop,
(208)882-0205 and ask to talk to either Darrell or Bo. Bo usually works
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00 -> 16:00 Pacific Time. Darrell is
unpredictable (he's the owner). The prices are listed on the web site at:
http://www.boomershoot/2002/blast.htm#Ammo.

I told them I would be getting back to him in a couple weeks. So lets make
it a deadline of February 23rd to send me email on how approximately much
ammo you will be buying on site.

I just got through talking to the owner of a local gun store and he is
interested in having ammo on site for the three days of the shoot. He won't
have solid prices until the middle of January, but in the meantime if people
that might want to buy ammo at the event would give me some idea of the type
and quantity I would appreciate it. I told him that Federal Gold Medal in
.223, .308, 30-06, and .300 Win Mag would probably cover 80 to 90% of the
people, but if I'm wrong please let me know soon. If it's something a
little 'off the wall' I'm sure you could special order it and have it
delivered to the site, but you probably would have to pay up front.

This might be a particularly good deal for people that are flying to the
event (I have one entry from Michigan already) and don't want to pack 300+
rounds of ammo with them.

Of possible minor interest is that the ATF came out for a visit to the
explosives magazine last week. It was a pleasant visit. They are making
'courteous visits' to everyone with explosives licenses and it was my turn
last week. Inspector Nelson said her brother might be interested in
attending next year. She took some pictures of the empty magazine and asked
me to report any suspicious behavior regarding people associated with my
explosives dealings.

Have a merry Christmas and get your entries in soon if you want to attend.
I expect I will get a flood of entries after the first of the year.

This morning I received some material from Gene Econ and Mike Haugen
regarding some training information. This will be of most interest to the
people attending the clinic on Saturday I have put them up on the web site
for the easy viewing of everyone.

I was particularly impressed with the article: "The Truth About Mil Dots" by
Mike Haugen. This information corrects some of the information I had in my
article "Mils versus Mils versus Mils". It turns out that the US Marines
use different mil dot recticle from the Army. In my article I had the US
military all using the same "mil". The Marines are using the same
definition as the Army which is what I regard as correct. But beyond that
Mr. Haugen goes into far more detail on using Mil Dot recticles in your
shooting.

The other article by Mr. Haugen that I just put up is: "Optics and Their
Use". The direct links to the article are:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/TruthMilDots.htm

and

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/optics.htm

The table of contents for all the technical papers I have on the site are
at:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/training.htm

For those of you I have on my list as attending the shoot this weekend,
there will be another update late tonight. It looks like there will be some
rain mid-day on Saturday, cloudy with chance of showers on Sunday. More
details on the weather and other Boomer Shoot related stuff late tonight or
early tomorrow morning.

I have chosen the image to be used for the t-shirts. Go to:
http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/blast.htm to see it at the top of the page.

Spectators and participants will be able to purchase a limited number
on-site. To ensure you will have one (or ten, whatever), send email to me
(JoeH@...) by Tuesday April 10 with the quantity, size, and
color you want. The two colors available will be white and a light tan or
cream color (not selected yet). The price will be $12.00 per shirt.

I just got some email from Gene Econ. There are only six slots left.

See http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/clinic.htm for details and to sign up.
Every year this fills up and each year he covers different material. You
need to act fast if you want to attend. It is at the same location, just
the day before the Boomer Shoot so the incremental cost is rather small.

I just received email from Gene Econ. He says there are still a few open
slots for the precision rifle clinic. Don't miss out on this fantastic
value. Even if you have attended previous clinics there is new material and
of course the invaluable coaching that will make it well worth your while.
For more information and to sign up see
http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/clinic.htm.

You do not have to be signed up for the Boomer Shoot to attend the clinic.
They are two different events that take place at the same location on
different days (Saturday and Sunday).

For those of you signed up for the Boomer Shoot you should receive two
copies of this message. One via the announcement list ('[BoomerShoot]' is
in the subject line and is sent via Yahoo Groups) and one directly from me.
This is a test mailing to make sure I have all the email addresses for
people attending the shoot in a list separate from the announcement list.
If you only got one email and are signed up for the shoot please let me
know.

The last slot for the Boomer Shoot is full. If you have sent your entry in
and I haven't sent you email or called you (one guy forgot to send me his
email address) then you will go onto the waiting list.

I have been getting calls from people asking if there are still openings.
The answer is yes. As of right now there are still 13 slots open.

If you sent me an entry you should have received an email confirmation from
me. If you have not then please contact me and help me figure out why not.

I did an inventory of all my chemicals and milk cartons and except for some
model racing fuel which I plan to pick up this week I have all the critical
items. Plan on lots of chest thumping explosions the end of April, it's
going to be a real blast.

Go to http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/blast.htm for more details on the
upcoming event and instructions on how to enter.

JoeH@...

I have arranged for special rates for Boomer Shooters on April 27th and 28th
at the Konkolville Motel. But you must make the reservations BEFORE
February 14. For more details see:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/general.htm#Accommodations

As of last Saturday the event was half full. More people, that said they
were going to sign up, may have actually sent in their entries by now. Last
year it wasn't until seven weeks prior to the event that it was this full.
We are currently 13 weeks away. At this rate we will fill up by about the
end of February.

When I receive your entry I send you email confirming your entry. If I
don't send you the confirmation it means I did not receive your entry! One
person is certain they sent in their entry and I have not received it. I
suspect they did not use the zip+4 zip code. The +4 is important! The
letter ends up going to the wrong post office if you don't include it.

Also of interest is that I have successfully detonated a new mixture that is
very cheap. For the recipe and details see:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/reactive.htm#NitroJan7

It is roughly 1/10 the cost of the current mixture but probably isn't very
sensitive. I probably will be using it for a BIG BOOM this year. I bought
a six gallon plastic bucket to fill with the material. Last year a half
gallon to a gallon of the old mixture left big craters (18" deep, 4->5'
across) in the field. I think I will suspend this between two trees to
avoid having to come back the next week with a front end loader to fill in
the craters like I did last year.

I just got an update from Eugene Econ. I have added the details of the
clinic he will be putting on to the web page. It sounds not only like great
training but like a lot of fun. Check it out! Course outline and sign up
details are at:

http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/clinic.htm

Also of possible interest is that I now have 10% of the positions filled for
the next event. I was a bit surprised that people were signing up so early,
but I sold out last year so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

There is still lots of room left, but don't wait for the last minute. And
don't think that just because you told me, "Sign me up." or "I'll be there."
means you are signed up. I need to have your entry fee and your signed
rules in hand before I allocate a position to you. When I receive the entry
I email you confirmation letter. If you don't have confirmation you aren't
signed up.

Sign up details for the Boomer Shoot are available at:

I've set the price for the April 29, 2001 event at $40.00 for a single
shooting position and $25.00 for each additional shooter at that position.
$5.00 less for people that are members of the Palouse Practical Shooters.
If you have made up your mind you are going to attend, I will accept entries
now. No big hurry at this time. But I expect it will sell out by mid to
late March. So don't wait until the very last minute to sign up.

If you plan on spending the night in an Orofino motel don't make your
reservations yet. I have talked to the management at the Konkolville motel
and they have said that if I talk to them in January they will give people
a special rate. I'll post more about this in January some time.

I've decided on a tentative distribution of targets of various sizes. There
will be several 'big ones'. The 'thump' from these should be heard for many
miles.

See http://www.boomershoot.org/2001/blast.htm for more details.

All the targets will be easier to detonate than the targets of previous
events. Most of the time CCI .22 Mini-Mag +V will set them off from 25
yards away.

For more details (including video) see the October 15, 2000 update at:
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/reactive.htm#ProjectNitro

Also of probable interest is the pumpkin disposal some friends and I did on
Saturday November 4th. See:
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/reactive.htm#Pumpkin.

There are also some pictures from our Confederate Air Force pyro that I
haven't shared with you before. You have probably seen some of them, but
not all. Don't get your hopes up, displays like this would be REALLY cool
at the next Boomer Shoot, but they are expensive (hundreds of dollars each)
and it's going to be a few years (decades is more like it) before the memory
of the 'little fire' I had in July '99 fades enough to even consider
something like this. See:
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/reactive.htm#Expert

Subject: Probabilities of hitting a target.
JoeH@...
Send Email Send Email

A few minute ago I updated the web page on the probability of hitting one of
the reactive targets. It makes several assumptions that aren't valid in all
cases. Such as the shooter doesn't make any gross errors such as jerking
the trigger. It also assumes the shooter knows and exactly compensates for
the range to the target and the average wind. The variables that are left
to chance are the accuracy of the cartridge/firearm/shooter combination
(either 0.5 or 1.0 MOA), the muzzle velocity (standard deviation of 5 or 10
fps), and the wind velocity estimation (+/-0.5, +/-1.0, and +/-2.0 MPH).
Given all that, the chance of hitting on of the targets is given for Federal
Match .223, .308, 30.06, and 300 Win Mag ammo for various ranges and
conditions. There are 20 different tables for each of the four cartridges
going over various target sizes and orientation, and the conditions.
Nothing really earth shaking in the results. The probabilities are a little
better than I expected at the more distant ranges. But it could be that I
made some incorrect assumptions about things like the wind estimation
errors. See the following link for all the gory details:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/probability.htm

Also of possible interest is that I received the email below on Friday.
Someone is expressing an interest in getting some of the video for the
shoots. I'm not sure whether I should do it or not. Any advice? Anyone
know these people (not ABC, Unapix Productions)? From looking at my web
logs it appears that they looked only at the first page of the web site and
sent me email within a minute or so. When I called him about 2 minutes
later I had to explain which web site it was that I received the email
about. I'm not sure how interested they really are at this time...

Also, I've received some more pictures of "FAA approval required" type
activities from the pryo technician that does work for the Confederate Air
Force. Here is the complete list for the new people on the list:

http://www.boomershoot.org/general/2Pools@Chat.jpg
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/Close@Chat.jpg
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/SwimPool.jpg
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/Smyrna1313#0.jpg
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/Smyrna1313#2.jpg
http://www.boomershoot.org/general/Smyrna1313#3.jpg

Again, these are too expensive and it would make the local fire warden
nervous if we did anything like this at a Boomer Shoot.

I've pretty firmly made up my mind on the date of the next event. Mark your
calendars for April 28/29th of 2001.

I've done a few experiments to verify that I CAN make some interesting
night/evening-time targets for tracers. No results yet on whether I can
make it work for non-tracers but I'm getting close. Expect results on those
experiments by mid to late October.

I have completed a technical paper on "Accurate Versus Low Wind Drift
Cartridges". The result is an equation you can plug into your spreadsheet
and decide which is the better cartridge to use at a particular range given
that you have to choose between an more accurate cartridge or a lower wind
drift cartridge. The derivation is probably more tedious than most anyone
will care to follow through. But you may the summary of the problem, the
beginning of the "Solution" section and the "Conclusion" may hold your
interest. See: http://boomershoot.org/general/AccuracyWind.htm for details.

There is a dynamite shoot in October if you are willing to travel to Gateway
Colorado. See http://www.acsol.net/~firedept/dynamite.html for more
details.

I keep getting these great pictures from the pyro guy who does work for the
Confederate Air force. These are way too expensive (not to mention the fire
hazard) to do for a Boomer Shoot event, but they are awesome to look at.
See the following:

I call it my "FAA approval required" list of things to do...
