I believe the Dodgers could have traded Tomko if they thought
they had someone better. If Weaver, who is even worse than Tomko could
be traded twice in a short period of time, anybody can be traded. There
is a dearth of pitching, and there is always someone to take an arm off
your hands. If Loaiza isn't effective next year, or he just doesn't
make the starting rotation, I believe he will be traded. We might not
get much for him, but we will not have to pay him. Meanwhile, he is
certainly a better option for September than Tomko or Hendrickson and
likely Wells. :-)
What does everyone think? I'm happy, at least it's another option.

Dodgers claim RHP Loaiza, saving A's more than $8 million
Dodgers claim RHP Loaiza, saving A's more than $8 million
By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer
August 29, 2007
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed right-hander
Esteban Loaiza off waivers
from the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, assuming more than $8 million
in guaranteed salary.
Loaiza, a two-time All-Star, had made only two starts after missing the
first 4 1/2 months of the
season because of three different injuries. He allowed just three
earned runs in 14 2-3 innings in
the two starts and gives the Dodgers depleted rotation a boost for the
stretch run.
"I never thought I would get traded," Loaiza said before leaving
Oakland. "I didn't think this was
going to happen but it happened. I feel kind of shocked because I had
just started two games this
year."
Loaiza will join the Dodgers for their weekend series in San Diego. Los
Angeles began the day 4
1/2 games behind Arizona in the NL West and 3 1/2 games behind San
Diego in the wild-card race.
"I've been there before, with the Yankees and with this team last
year," Loaiza said of his
postseason experience. "I know what it takes to win."
Los Angeles signed David Wells last week as general manager Ned
Colletti tries to overcome
injuries to Jason Schmidt, Randy Wolf and Hong-Chih Kuo and
ineffectiveness by Brett Tomko and
Mark Hendrickson.
"At this time of the year, we're looking for any way to improve the
team and Esteban is a talented
veteran who we hope can contribute down the stretch and next season,"
Colletti said. "He has a
history of winning games and right now that's what's most important to
our team."
The Dodgers assume the $1.17 million Loaiza is owed for the rest of
this season, as well as his
$6.5 million salary for 2008. Loaiza, 35, also has a $7.5 million club
option for 2009 with a
$375,000 buyout. Oakland still owes Loaiza $1 million from his signing
bonus.
"Certainly Esteban was making some money next year," A's assistant
general manager David Forst
said. "But it wasn't as much about salary as about giving guys an
opportunity."
The A's have not decided who will take Loaiza's spot in the rotation
Sunday against Detroit.
Looking ahead to next season, Oakland has Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, Chad
Gaudin, Lenny DiNardo and
the injury-plagued Rich Harden under its control, as well as younger
pitchers like Dallas Braden
and Dan Meyer.
"We felt like it was an opportunity for some of the younger guys in the
organization going forward
and it gives us some flexibility," Forst said. "Hopefully it works
out well for Esteban. He's
going to a team trying to win a division."
Loaiza has a 124-108 career record and 4.60 ERA in 362 career games for
the Pirates, Rangers, Blue
Jays, White Sox, Yankees, Nationals and Athletics.
To make room for Loaiza on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred
outfielder Jason Repko to
the 60-day disabled list.
Oakland recalled right-hander Colby Lewis from Triple-A Sacramento to
take Loaiza's place on the
roster.

Dodgers' Wolf not likely to start again this season
BY TONY JACKSON Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 08/22/2007 11:43:08 PM PDT
PHILADELPHIA - Dodgers left-hander Randy Wolf, who played catch Wednesday for the first time since his ill-fated rehabilitation start for Single-A
Inland Empire on July 25, said that if he does pitch in the majors again this year, it likely will be as a reliever.
"I think (starting) would be hard, because we're running out of time," said Wolf, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 4 with shoulder soreness. "The minor leagues are going to be over. For me to build up my stamina and get enough innings to start will be difficult. So realistically, I think to help out in the bullpen would be my best bet."
Wolf said his throwing session went "great," and he plans to have another one today. But there still is no target date for throwing off a mound.
"Usually when I don't throw for a while, my arm feels really funky, like I have never thrown a ball before in my life," said Wolf, who was celebrating his 31st birthday. "But I actually didn't feel that way this time. ... I don't want to get caught up in the calendar. You want to
be smart about it. If I have to take it easy one day, I don't want it to feel like a setback."
Left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo (elbow inflammation) also played catch for
the first time. Right-hander Chin-Hui Tsao (shoulder) is not on the trip and isn't expected to start playing catch until sometime next week.
No McDonald yet: The Dodgers aren't considering promoting right-hander James McDonald from Double-A Jacksonville to start Sunday night's game at New York, so embattled right-hander Brett Tomko apparently will stay in the starting rotation.
"When (McDonald) is ready, he will be here, just like all our other young players," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "(Tomko) is one of our five starters right now."
The front office is still trying to find another pitcher outside the organization and is
believed to have at least some interest in veteran lefty David Wells, who was released by San Diego a week ago. An additional pitcher probably would push Tomko back to the bullpen or even off the roster.
Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti has personally witnessed three of McDonald's starts this season, including Tuesday night's loss to Mississippi in which McDonald gave up three runs in a shaky first inning but otherwise dominated in a five-inning performance.
"He looked really interesting, in a good way," Colletti said. "This kid had a great feel for pitching. He has four pitches, and he throws them for strikes, he changes speeds, he changes eye levels, he throws on a downhill plane, he puts a lot of thought into what he does, and he is successful doing it."
McDonald is 6-2 with a 1.65 ERA since his promotion from Single-A Inland Empire. But he also has thrown 125 2/3innings this season, and his
velocity, which reached the 92-93 mph range earlier in the season, is topping out now at 87-88. That probably is a sign he is tired, and that could be enough to dissuade club officials from calling him up this year.
Interesting reading about what Randy had to say about his status for the rest
of the season. He
said that he will not start any games this season but if he pitches he would
come out of the
bullpen. He said with the minor league season just about over, he wouldn't be
able to go down for
any rehab assignments and be able to build back up his stamina. Heck, as far as
I know, David
Wells has taken his spot as the lefty starter for the rest of the season.

Funny he would be the face of the Dodgers, considering he spread his seed over many a Dodger territory and probably in the face.....I won't go there....tempted but I won't.

To my surprise, David Wells pitched effectively against
NY, a very good hitting team. Dodgers lead 6-2 in the sixth and David
is through for the night. Is it possible he has four more decent games
left in his burly left arm? In any case, so far Wells is far better
than Tomko/Hendrickson. Personally. I believe Colletti was desperate
and rolled the dice with Wells as he doesn't appear to have much
alternative. :-)
Thanks for your thoughts on the Tomko matter. What do
you think Coletti sees in Wells? Surely not his last four starts in
San Diego! How much are the Dodgers paying for Wells for the next five
weeks? We shall see tonight if he has anything left. It will all be
out there for the world to see on ESPN. If the hitters don't wake up
pretty soon it won't matter who is pitching. The season will be over.

I think Wells has an incentive contract where he could end up getting close to
1 Million just
from LA. I think what Colletti sees in Wells is someone who is a gamer, a
veteran who has been in
the thick of a pennant race in the past and someone who probably wants to stick
it to San Diego if
given the chance. I know Ned wanted him last season at the trade deadline and
Boston wanted Kemp
for him. Can you imagine? Well, Boston did end up with an ex Dodger in Drew
and they can keep
him!

Wells and the Dodgers agreed to a contract, and the big lefty plans to make his first start for Los Angeles on Sunday night against the Mets in New York.
The 44-year-old Wells was designated for assignment by his hometown San Diego Padres on Aug. 9 and placed on release waivers four days later. He cleared waivers last Thursday and became a free agent.
The Dodgers will be his ninth team in a 21-year major league career.
