On the Dodgers' groups that I belong to, I would say that about 2/3 of the fans have negative thoughts about the Pierre signing, of which I am not one. Their reasons are despite a .300 BA, he doesn't walk enough and despite his stolen bases, he is caught stealing too often. Also, they are upset that he is not a "big bat: (power hitter) and that he may hold up one of our prospects. I differ for the following reasons:
1/ His OBP is a bit low, but he rarely strikes out. Consequently, his outs are often productive. By not striking out, he often moves runners along even when he doesn't get on base. Also, when you constantly put the ball in play, especially with his speed, errors are going to be made; a good thing for his team.
2/ He appears to have the reputation of stealing because of his speed, but not reading the pitcher well. he will be working this spring with Maury Wills, one of the all time best base stealers, and should improve his steal percentage dramatically.
3/ The Dodgers have no real centre field prospect for Pierre to hold up. If they can improve in CF, Pierre is the type of player who is easily tradeable.
4/ I believe Colletti is still trying to get a "big bat" for left field. Manny Ramirez just might be the one. Garciaparra may end up in left field with Ethier moving to right field. Lastly, Kemp might have a huge spring and end up as our power hitter in right field. If not, he will likely be up during the year and should be a fixture in 2008.
5/ The top of the order consists of Furcal and Pierre, two rabbits, and Garciaparra, Kent and whomever is added should have many opportunities to drive in runs. If Manny is here, he will have a field day hitting behind Furcal, Pierre and Garciaparra. Kent will also thrive.
6/ Lastly, except for a couple of prospects if we acquire Manny or Cabrera, our core of arguably the best crop of minor leaguers in baseball remains intact.
My prediction is that the Dodgers will easily win the West, and if Manny and Zito or Schmidt are added, they will run away with the division and be a force in the post season. Even without adding a "bat", signing Zito or Schmidt might be enough. Even more than Manny, I would like to see a trade with the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera and/or Dontrelle Willis.

Colletti announced Randy Wolf and the Dodgers have finalized an $8 million, one-year contract. Wolf gets $7.5 million next year, and the Dodgers have a $9 million option for 2008 with a $500,000 buyout. His 2008 salary would become guaranteed if Wolf pitches 180 innings next season. Could be a good starter for us but coming off elbow surgery – will he stay healthy. That is the big question.
For 19 Million, a little raise from his off season last season. That's a
little more than 6
Milion a season. Overpaid I am sure but if he can return to the form that made
him a 40+ save
closer for Tampa Bay, it would be a deal for Baltimore.

They sign free agent outfielder Carlos Lee for six years and 100 Million an
average of a little
less than the 17 Million that Soriano got. He and Lance Berkman should
complement each other very
well and Houston has needed help with their offense. Now I have to wonder if
they will resign
Andy Pettitte & Roger Clemens.

I guess there will be Dodger fans who think Matthews, Jr would have been the
better pick up than Pierre was but
I don't think so. I am happy with Juan and his deal is a little less than
Matthews
who will be getting 10 Million a season. Matthews had nice numbers last season
but his history
shows that he doesn't play in many games and he had seven errors last season
too. It's a toss up
I guess but I like the speed at the top of the lineup for the Dodgers. Gary is also three years
older than Juan too. It's a good pickup for the Angels.

Source: Dodgers, CF Pierre agree to five-year deal By Jerry Crasnick ESPN.com
Free agent center fielder Juan Pierre has agreed to a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a source told ESPN.com on Monday. The deal is believed to be worth $44-45 million.
The deal will become complete when Pierre passes a physical exam, the source said.
Pierre, 29, is a .303 hitter over seven seasons with Colorado, Florida and the Chicago Cubs. He led the National League with 204 hits in 2006. The San
Francisco Giants were also interested in Pierre, and had offered him a four-year deal in the $32-34 million range, a source said. Jerry Crasnick covers Major League Baseball for ESPN Insider.

I know what I would rather have, a player who isn't injury prone and who plays
and that player
isn't Drew so let it be Soriano or someone else who actually earns their
contract on the field.
17 Million is high but I agree with Zvi that it's the longetivity of the deal
that's crazy.

I think maybe she was referring to the long term free agent signings like
Kevin Brown and the
resiging of Darren Dreifort. The other contracts were for shorter amounts of
time. That was what
I mean't when I agreed with her, the longetivity contracts.

In my opinion, what you
are missing is that Soriano is worth 17 million in today's market. Drew will
likely get 14 million. Would you rather have Drew at 14 million or Soriano at
17? My only problem is with the length of the contract.

Yes, between sharing and money from TV and Cable and

just hate to see the golden goose killed for no good reason and 17million a
year sure sounds like it.... IMHO Soriano is NOT a 17million/yr player...

__________ NOD32 1871 (20061119) Information __________
The deal
with the All-Star first baseman will be formally announced Monday, Dodgers
spokesman Joe Jareck said Sunday night.
The
33-year-old Garciaparra won the NL comeback player of the year award last
season, shifting to first base with the Dodgers.
Garciaparra,
a two-time AL batting champion and six-time All-Star, hit .303 with 93 RBIs and
20 home runs for the Dodgers last season, matching J.D. Drew in homers for the
team lead.
Last
season, he earned $8.5 million, including $2.5 million in incentives. He signed
a 1-year deal with the Dodgers last winter. Injuries limited him to a total of
82 games in the previous two years. He was slowed late in the season by
quadriceps and oblique muscle injuries.
Garciaparra
-- who grew up in nearby Whittier and graduated
from St. John Bosco High in suburban Bellflower--
had said he was interested in staying with the Dodgers.
"I've
loved every minute of it," he said last month.
Garciaparra
became all the more attractive to the Dodgers after Drew opted out of the final
three years of his contract earlier this month, making him eligible to become a
free agent.
Drew, who
turns 31 this month, hit .283 with 20 homers and a team-leading 100 RBIs last
season -- his second with the Dodgers. He signed a five-year, $55 million
contract on Dec. 23, 2004, and had been guaranteed $33 million over the next
three years with Los Angeles.
Los Angeles was
swept by the New
York Mets in the first round of the playoffs and is 1-12 in the postseason
since winning the 1988 World Series.
Garciaparra
was AL Rookie of the Year in 1997 and won his first batting title in 1999. He
was considered one of baseball's best shortstops for several years while
playing with the Boston Red
Sox.
Garciaparra
hit .283 with nine homers and 30 RBIs for the Chicago Cubs
two seasons ago, when he earned $8.25 million. With the Cubs, he tore his left
groin running out of the batter's box in St.
Louis in 2005 and was out for several months.
He missed
81 games in 2004 with three injuries -- to his Achilles' tendon, left wrist and
right groin. And in 2001 with the Red Sox,
he underwent surgery on his right wrist.
Agreed. Five years, maybe 6. With 8 years, he will be 38 when his deal
expires. I wouldn't
want to pay a 35 and 36 year old 17 Million per.

No, I don't think so. I still believe that pitching is the key there. Heck,

Beltran signed for and
his average salary is 17 Million. Like Zvi said, if Drew gets 14 Million,
Soriano has to get
more. Gosh, Beltre at 13 Million per in Seattle is looking like a deal now!

Agreed. I'm starting to think the same thing. Anytime a free agent signs a
huge deal, the fans
have to pay for it in raising prices, from parking to concessions and of course

There have been some more free agent signings but none by the Dodgers so far.
The Angels also
named a pitching coach and unfortunately it isn't Orel Hershiser. Their new
pitching coach is
former Angel Mike Butcher. It's probably better Orel isn't there because I
really didn't want to
root for the Angels. The Angels also signed a free agent, Justin Speier, a
relief pitcher to a
four year deal. Frank Catalanatto signed a three year deal with the Texas
Rangers. The Reds have
signed free agent Mike Stanton as well as Shortstop Alex Gonzalez and the Mets
are close to
signing Moises Alou.
