Los Angeles Dodgers
2003 RECORD: 85-77 2nd place.
FREE AGENTS AVAILABLE: OF Brian Jordan, P Paul Quantrill, OF Jeromy Burnitz,
1B Fred McGriff, P Andy Ashby, P Wilson Alvarez, P Tom Martin, IF Ron Coomer
IF Robin Ventura, OF Rickey Henderson.
POSSIBLE TRADE BAIT:P Odalis Perez, 3B Adrian Beltre, IF Alex Cora, IF/OF
Jolbert Cabrera, 1B/OF Darryl Ward.
NEEDS AND WANTS: Offense, offense and more offense -- most likely, from the
infield corners or left field. But also possibly from shortstop, catcher if
a free agent is signed and Paul LoDoca moves to left field, or even right
field, if a free-agent is signed and Shawn Green moves to first base.
Valuable bullpen parts might need to be replaced if Quantrill, Martin and
Alvarez leave.
RUMOR CENTRAL: Things are pretty much on hold for now, as the ownership change
to Frank McCourt is in the works, and GM Dan Evans’ fate rests in the balance.
Reports already have linked Billy Beane to the job. Look for one big splash to
add a bat either through trade or free agent signing, plus a couple of other
additions. Some possibilities: Vlad Guerrero, Kaz Matsui, Richie Sexson.
Quantrill walked away from $3.1 million in guaranteed money in 2004 to seek free
agency, a chancy move in a down market that is filled with closers. Since
Quantrill led the majors in appearances in front of Eric Gagne, the Dodgers will
be looking for another right-handed arm in their excellent bullpen. Veterans
Brian Jordan and Andy Ashby – both injury plagued in the stays in Los Angeles –
won’t be back after their 2004 options weren’t picked up.
