Re: [BlueBallsandStrikes] Eddie Murray/Jeff Kent.

The thing about predicting whether someone will surpass someone is pretty difficult. Utley could if he has the longevity & health of Kent. Then again, he could be out of the game tomorrow. When you look at history, Kent's numbers for a 2nd baseman and his ability to remain healthy are phenominal..........plus the fact that yes..........who is protecting you does matter, it's just not everything. There are so many factors. How many times Utley is pitched to, walked, pitched around, etc. Point is Jeff kent's figures are astounding for a 2nd baseman. Him not making the Hall on first vote would be a joke and an outrage. No question he will. While we're on the subject.......it was alluded to that Jeff also had the benefit of Barry Bonds. I would like to point out that the fact is for those whio don't know, much of that time with Bonds, Jeff Kent hit behind Barry............not in front of. In other words, he was Barry's protection.

I compared them Max only because Murray didn't associate with the press and the rumor was that no sports writer was going to vote for a player such as Eddie Murray to the Hall because he was so nasty to them.  My point was that Murray was voted in on his first chance as should Kent and that even if you are nasty to the press, it should not matter, what matters is the numbers.  Murray had them obviously, being one of only 4 players to have 3,000 hits and 500 homeruns.  Kent's numbers won't be as high as those numbers but as a second baseman, he is possibly one of the best power hitting one's to have ever played the game.  Chase Utley I am sure will pass Jeff in the homerun numbers when his career is over but Jeff has been one of the best.  Basically the only thing missing for him is a Championship but there are lots of players who never get one and are still in the Hall.

P.S.  By the way, Murray is my all time favorite player.

I don't quite know how this Eddie Murry vs. Jeff Kent dialog got started but, since I added a comment a few days ago about Jeff's personality and ability to get along with people, I would like to say that Jeff is an outstanding baseball talent.  He has all the grit and fighting spirit of many of the players of the "good old days".  He is no better than an average infielder but he has been an outstanding hitter and a hustler in the mode of Pete Rose.  Jeff is a winner.  He clearly deserves to go into the Hall of Fame and has the numbers to prove it.  My only point earlier was that the voting for the Hall is somewhat influenced by the relationship that the player had with the press and fans and Jeff too often seems to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.  If I were a journalist I would vote him in.  As for Eddie Murray, I knew him best during his long career with the Orioles  but then again observed him in Vero Beach during the short time he wore the Dodger Blue.  I never knew Eddie to bad mouth the fans or press.  The fans in Baltimore loved to chant "Eddie, Eddie".  I have no reason to find the Kent and Murry personalities alike.  They were/are  both outstanding baseball players.
