Briefly: Joey Devine (elbow strain) will throw a simulated game Wednesday or perhaps Friday, according to manager Bob Geren. Then he is expected to head on a rehab assignment and he could be activated by the end of next week. ... Justin Duchscherer was much improved after dealing with a weeklong viral infection that left him drained in last Tuesday night's All-Star Game as well as in Sunday's start against the Yankees. At one point Sunday, with the heat in the mid-90s, Duchscherer said he started seeing speckles. He drank a Gatorade between innings, felt better, slept the entire flight to Florida and was back to normal. ... The Dodgers, who reportedly have interest in reliever Huston Street with closer Takashi Saito out for six weeks, have a scout at this series. Los Angeles' biggest need might be for a shortstop, because of Rafael Furcal's back injury. Could Bobby Crosby be a possibility? ... Left-handed reliever Alan Embree, who has been traded five times, is monitoring rumors as the July 31 trade deadline approaches and he wouldn't be surprised if he's moved. ... Rajai Davis saw the replay of his caught-stealing that ended Sunday's game and, he said, "I was definitely safe.
