Yo Ho Bikerpelli riders!
I've been with Alex and the crew thoroughly enjoying an amazing experience. I did take a GPS last year but was so involved with the trail and sights, I seldom looked at it. I did keep the track feature on which helped me know where I was. Doing this helped me get out of a loop where I didn't see the Kokopelli marker. Mind you, I was probably the last rider. Usually there are lots of riders coming along to help along the way. If your aren't sure of your position, just check your map. Take a compass and *know how to use it*. A compass is light and uses no batteries and doesn't break if you drop it. You would get along fine with just that. A couple of years ago, several of us took a wrong turn at the Fruita loops where pranksters had moved a Kokopelli sign during the Fat Tire Races. That added a few miles to the ride... Just check your map at junctions. Back to the GPS --I think its best to take the map he suggests, mark a grid on it using the compass marks along the edge of the map before you go so its easy to run your finger along the grid to find your position when there. The GPS would help you know for sure where you were.
Stans --yep, I do Stans. At least with Stans in your tire, you stand a chance of a puncture sealing, and a good chance at that! I've had Stans seal up some pretty good sized holes. My front tire had so many thorns sticking through, I lost count of the number. That would have been a lot of flats! On the inside, there was just a little tiny glob of Stans at each place where the thorn pierced the tire. Its still going strong! Yep, I use Stans. I use it in non-tubless tires on tubless rims. It's a light set up and you can really run a low pressure and climb wonderfully. I use a nice fat 2.35 on the front. Just carry a rag to wipe out the tire should you need to use a tube on the ride. I was always a little amazed at how few flats there were along the way. Those rocks out there are smooth and rounded. Not nearly like the sharp flint we have in Missouri.

waypoints that can be downloaded or keyed in to another unit? Will the
map offered by Bikerpelli have UTM coordinates on it?
Also, Stan's tubeless system seems to have about a 50-50
survival/success rate, if you believe the comments on BikeReviews . If
you have to carry an extra tube and pump anyway, is there a compelling
reason to convert? Assuming I convert, any recommendations as to the
best tire to use for the Kokopelli?
Thanks
