Hey Maureen,
Again sorry we couldn't get you in just yet, registration was a
feeding frenzy yesterday.
If you're looking for other ways to do this you've got a few
options. There are lots of commercial outfitters that'll take you
for around $1000 per person. Pretty cushy that way. Next best is
finding another group trip, Team Evergreen in Denver does a fall
trip usually, altho it's never a sure bet. Their's is super-low-
cost & a lot of fun (not nearly as good as ours, of course!).
If you can rope in a support driver you can do it yourself any way
you want. Self-supported with vehicle, the way you're talking about
doing it means you'll basically be doing the trail in loops, about
twice the mileage. That's got it's own drawbacks & because of the
risks you need to know what you're doing.
Solo is a different beast altogether - this means you're carrying &
caching. While it has it's own rewards, it tends to be more a test
of determination than a pure bike ride, but sometimes that's exactly
what someone wants. Be sure to do your research there & go in eyes-
open about what you're getting into.
There is only one guidebook to the Kokopelli in print, it's on
Amazon, and in my opinion is a poor resource. It was good 16 years
ago when it was written but now is badly outdated (who rides a fully
rigid mtn bike anymore?)& does very little to prepare you
logistically. Consequently I went & wrote my own guidebook. Yes,
here comes my shameless plug. It should be back from the printer
late this month. In it you'll find everything you need to plan &
execute any type of kokopelli trip you're up for, and enough info to
to decide what's best for you. Essentially everything we've learned
from 4 years of Bikerpelli. See "guidebook" on Bikerpelli.com. OK,
enough of that.
So I'm throwing this info out there for you & all the others that
didn't make the trip this year. If you don't get in from the
waitlist there are other options. You may be able to get a bunch of
the waitlister together & do your own trip. If you do let me know,
I'll be glad to help you work up a plan.
Best wishes,
Alex.
