Hello all,

I am putting together a ride (the BALI Riverhead ride) for this Saturday, September 19, 2009. We will follow the same meeting place and time as in our Trip Information for Riverhead. We will arrive at the meeting place in the municipal parking lot at 9:30 am and ride at 10:00 am. The ride is 20 miles, flat with some hilly stretches. Estimated time of the ride is 3 hours, depending on how often we stop. THIS IS NOT A RIDE ORGANIZED BY OUR ESTEEMED TRAIL BOSS, GEORGE, SO DO NOT CALL HIM THE MORNING OF THE RIDE FOR INFO. If you like you can call my home number to let me know you are coming, or better yet just show up! As far as the weather goes, it looks good right now, but keep yourself informed. Hope to see some folks in Riverhead!

Saturday's forecast isn't looking ideal for our canoe trip. A chance of a shower might not scare us off, but a chance of a thunderstorm should be taken seriously. I don't want to be on the water in a metal boat and 2 hours from safety as lightning begins to strike.

Call the Trail Boss Hotline (631-499-3953) after 8:00 AM on the morning of the trip, to find out if the trip is on or off. If it's cancelled, please call Bob's Canoe Rentals (631)269-9761) to let him know you won't be there.

people on Long Island a new Jamis bicycle, as well as Lazer helmets and OnGuard
locks, September 3, 2009. Bicycling Magazine's BikeTown project started as a
tiny idea...could having a bike change someone's life?  BikeTown has
resulted in thousands of wonderful stories about people who have lost weight
or re-connected with their families or overcome depression or saved money by
riding to work or lived a healthier lifestyle.

Has bicycling changed your life?

Bicycling Magazine and BikeTown are changing people's lives by giving away
bicycles in communities around the country.  This year, Long Island has been
selected to be a BikeTown!  Submit an essay on behalf of yourself, a friend,
family member, co-worker or neighbor and explain how a bicycle could change
someone's life. The bicycles will be given away at lunchtime Thursday September
3 at Eisenhower Park in Westbury.   Submit essays at www.bicycling.com/biketown.

BikeTowners whose essays are selected are required to either be at the
giveaway event or have someone there authorized to pick up the bike for
them.  If someone doesn't show up, we have a raffle system set up to give
the bicycle to someone in the crowd.

I had received a few varying opinions from some of you about the installation of a guard rail along Wantagh Parkway, and wanted to offer a summary, but haven't had time. For those of you who favor a barrier, you might want to see this. I don't often get involved with petitions, but I intend to do this one.

I stumbled on this website. There is a petition to collect signatures for installing a guard rail along the Wantagh Bike Path.

There is a PDF of the petition and the woman Gina Russo, needs to collect signatures by 8/18/09.

I printed out the petition because I can get at least 50 signatures from the people I work with.

Maybe other members can collect signatures, and maybe we can make a difference.

It is sad that the big "joke" has always been that they will wait for a tragedy to occur before the DOT will act.

hi -

i am a moderate rider (at best!), but in pretty good shape.  i'd love to find a
"riding buddy" (or buddies!) to ride after work.  for me, that's around 4:30ish.
i'm happy to go later, as long as it's still light out.

i live off the service road of the LIE (just west of exit 40), and ride in SUNY
old westbury.  i'd like to try new places, so open to suggestion...

I hate sending this story out, but I think it's important.

Many of us ride the bike path along Wantagh Parkway, and are exposed to high-speed traffic. Just a few years ago, I remember seeing the remains of a motorcycle that had crossed the bike path and crashed. That time, nobody else got hurt. Maybe it's time to ask for a guard rail or other barrier to be constructed between the bike path and the roadway. I'm going to open this up for discussion and comments, and will get some contact information together so we can try to get something done. You may receive some extra emails for a few days, but I hope this can be a productive effort.

As a rule, I refuse all requests to pass along solicitations for fundraisers to the Bike Around Long Island group. While most, or all, may be worthy causes, the sheer volume of them could be annoying, to say the least. However, in this case, I've decided to make an exception. The request is from the mother of a young man from Sag Harbor who was killed in Iraq. For anyone who may be curious, and whether you want to participate or not, you might want to check out the Wounded Warrior Project (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/). I've confirmed with that organization that this event is valid. I'll be running our Wading River ride on the same day, but I won't be offended if anyone wants to do The Second Annual Soldier Ride The Hamptons instead.
