Hi Gang.
As always, I was up at 6am to check on weather conditions for our first ride of the season. It was raining, but that's not enough reason to call it off. I went online and watched the Doppler radar in motion, and checked a couple of hour by hour forecasts. At the very least it should have been raining when we gathered at 9:30, with a good chance of showers for a while after. I've ridden in rain, and ignoring whether each of us minds getting wet, there's the safety factor. Considering that winter's debris and potholes have not been remedied yet, cancellation seemed appropriate. Having had an exhausting week, I put the message on my machine, and went back for some much-needed sleep. When I looked out my window at 10am, the skies were blue, the road was drying, and it was 54 degrees, heading for 60. A perfect day for riding. 5 of you called in, which means we would have had at least 6 riders. Believe me when I say that I'm at least as disappointed as anyone. Not to mention a bit foolish for the bad call.
Looking ahead, I don't want this to happen again (which doesn't mean it won't). Given the same scenario, I may need to take a new course of action. Instead of calling the ride "on" or "off" at 6am, I might suggest that it looks like it's going to clear up, and if you're feeling lucky, bring your rain gear and we'll decide later.
Have you ever heard that it's good luck for the rest of the season to have the first ride cancelled? Neither have I, so I just made it up.
Sorry for any disappointment, disilliusionment, inconvenience, or other maladies caused by today's erroneous cancellation. I hope that you managed to enjoy the day anyway, and that we'll all be biking together soon (like next Saturday).
George.
