I think it was 90wt oil. That’s what I use, it’s usually labeled
gear oil. And it’s pretty cheap at most auto parts places.
I mix it 50-50 with mineral spirits, which makes it thin enough
that it won’t gum things up, but it also gives the additives that make it good
for
gears. The mixing also lets you adjust how thick it is for other
uses. – Chain oil etc.
I haven’t tried it yet, but automatic transmission fluid would
probably also be fine. (Most of them use planetary gears just like a sturmey
archer hub)

Subject: [Bicycle_Restoration] Sturmey Archer Lubricant
There were some great posts this past summer fe
Sturmey Archer hubs. Somebody mentioned something like, "9 Wt" oil.
Hope I got it right. Can someone please define further what this is? Thanks!
Oh, And I just picked up a lot of 3 spd shifter cables for my friend and
dropped them with him today. These are Non-Sturmey branded products for all
sorts of Sturmey 3 spd setups. The company is out of NY and they are
manufactured in Japan.
