Folks,
I have been kind of quiet on the list. I thought that this was
going to be my last season of triathlons but I changed my mind after Ironman
Canada. It was such a positive experience and there is still room for
improvement in this 42 year old body so I plan on returning to IMC next year
to try and improve on the run. It would be great to return as a
representative of the Bellingham Triathlon Club. Not sure if I will make it
tonight but I am happy to be involved in any way--be it coaching for new
folks or just contributing to the overall group dynamics. Good luck and
enjoy the off season.
Aaron, how about a report on CDA tri? I saw your swim time was a bit slow.
What happened?

Thanks, I will try to do better but senility happens.

Will someone alert the Herald to the official club meeting ? It might be
combined with some coverage of the 13 Hamsters doing Ironman Canada next
week. Good luck to all participants; wish I could be there. In passing, I
note 8 of us Bellingham TriHards already registered for Ironman Wisconsin
next year September - that race will probably fill within the next two
weeks, so hurry!

Hey!
I think we spoke at the Lake, but in case you had too much lake water in
your ears and didnt hear me, its on August 22nd at good ol' Round table
again, 7pm. I really really appreciate your voice in this process, Tjalling,
and hope you enjoy taking part in what will be a really successful group.
Its been an interesting ride so far, lets see where it goes!

Thank for stepping up!!

Its not going to be a potlluck in that we are bringing things from home, but
if yiou want to bring things like bananas or snacks or juice or something,
that would be great. Food should not be the main focus of the meeting, but I
would like to have snacks available. If you could be there at 6:40 that
would be great!! Thanks again!

Here is another option: for those of you who prefer an early morning workout...and tapering before Danskin, I am meeting two other triathletes to run once around the lake (2.6 miles) and then swim across and back (the 1/2 mile course)
Wednesday 0530 AM! See you there.

Wednesday at 6:00 PM, Lake Padden
Swim/Run Workout, go your own pace or find others to go with.  I am going to swim once around (long route) at an interval pace, like a swimming fartlek. Then run twice around.

Everyone invited!! Maybe we could make this a standard/scheduled workout?? I know the seasons almost over, but its never too late to get started.
Be there and have a great OUTDOOR workout!

Also...
...it looks like the Brigid Collins meeting area on N. Garden and Holly will be a good meeting place for Sept. 5th. I will keep everyone posted!!   Remember to spread the word about the Bellingham Tri Club!

Just a few things...

I want to remind everyone that September 5th is our first WHOLE CLUB
meeting, and if you are planning on attending and are using this email
listserve, please email back so I can get an idea...

This first meeting should really be the "kick-off" of our club. We
want AS MANY people as possible there at the introduction, whether
they want to be a part or not. So if you know people who are even
SLILGHTLY interested, tell them about this meeting.

I know you are probably wondering WHERE this will take place... and so
am I, actually. I have been looking for a suitable place but
everywhere I have found (except at WWU) is expensive or the wrong
environment. We need a large enough room for 50 people with seating.
If you have any ideas, please let me know! I will love you for the
rest of your life. Ok, maybe thats not the incentive you were looking
for.

And for the small charter group that met already, we are meeting
August 22nd at 7pm at Round Table to finalize everything and prepare
to present to the main group. Please dont forget what you volunteered
for, and if you did, ask me and I will gladly tell you! If you were
unable to be there and want to help, please call me at 360-961-8645,
or email this address quickly so I can get you up to speed. I will be
in Spokane/Coeur D'alene this weekend for the race but will check my
email and will have the cell phone.

Again, GET THE WORD OUT! I hope everyone is enjoying this awesome
weather we are having--its about time!  I hope to hear from EVERYONE
that they can be at the meeting!

Good luck to the 13(?) people doing Ironman Canada this month, as
well, if I dont get a chance to say so before then. Take care!

Hi Aaron,
You might try the Brigid Collins House [ 734-4616 ] at the corner of Holly
and Garden. They give FREE meeting space to non-profits so I don't know if
the Bellingham Triathlon Club would qualify. It's worth a try. Anyway the
Brigid Collins has a conference room that would hold about 50 people.
Another place is Old Elks building behind the Cancer radiation Clinic.

unable to be there and want to help, please call me at 360-961-8645,
or email this address quickly so I can get you up to speed. I will be
in Spokane/Coeur D'alene this weekend for the race but will check my
email and will have the cell phone.

Take care!

I will likely be at both meetings.

Check out the participant lists at IM Canada, Utah and Wisconsin (IMOO);
Bellingham is amazingly well represented. For those thinking of IM Canada
next year: you need to register on site (Penticton) the day after this
year's race, or you can have someone register there for you on that day; the
few spots remaining after that day will be allocated by lottery. Details are
on the recent Comments pages on the website (ironman.ca) - scroll down
through the last couple of days.

Tjalling.Ypma@...

Here is a report on the Cultus Lake Classic, a no-draft Olympic distance tri
in Chilliwack, B.C. held Sunday 29 July.

This was the first race ever organized by the recently-formed Chilliwack
Triathlon Club, and they did a fine job: championship chip timing, instant
results, t-shirts, the works. I think they had about 100 participants, with
myself as the sole representative from south of the border. They plan to run
this race every year, and I expect participation to grow rapidly since it is
a very challenging and scenic course in a beautiful area. Being only 90
minutes drive from Bellingham, this event is worth consideration by
Hamsters.

The swim is in Cultus Lake, at Maple Bay, They had a single line of buoys
running out 375m from the pebble beach, so we swam out and back twice with a
short run around a pole on the beach between laps. The start, by the
President of TriBC, was on dry land. I was glad to have my full wetsuit,
since the water was rather cool. I soon found a good pair of feet to latch
onto, and their owner towed me out to the buoy in good time. On the way back
someone else decided to compete for those feet, but after we had beat each
other over the head a few times we compromised and surfed the wake on either
side of those fast feet instead. On the second lap my drafter and draftee
decided that my feet were the place to be (so much for their judgement) so I
repaid my debt. A smooth transition, thanks to recent practice in fast
wetsuit removal, and I was off on the bike.

The bike route can be likened to a frying pan: you start at the end of the
handle, go to the pan, circle round clockwise three times, and return to the
end of the handle. Each loop is about 11 km, with the two trips along the
handle making up the balance of the 40km. The catch is that the road along
the handle is like the hill between Lake Samish and I-5, and you begin by
going up it. Clearly many people were unprepared for this, so I made up a
lot of places. The loop road also features a few low-gear climbs, and the
road is far from smooth, so I was rarely in top gear and got thoroughly
shook up on my aluminum frame. Those carbon-fiber aero wheels suddenly shot
to the top of my ' things to get ' list. I kind of enjoyed the loops, since
after the first one I knew what to expect and how hard to push. So I was
able to pick off quite a few more competitors before the downhill swoop to
T2.

The run is certainly the toughest 10k route I have ever raced. It is an
endless succession of hills on the road that twists alongside the lake,
first going out-and-back one way from the start, and then out-and-back in
the other direction. It is not that the hills are really high and steep,
just that there are many and some are long. The two U-turns give you a good
chance to check out the competition, so it was a pleasant surprise to find
myself well up in the pack. I just cruised along steadily, passing one
person and being passed by another, only turning it on at the end as I tried
to beat the clock to 2:41 (I failed).

I recommend this race. It is well organized, has a pleasant atmosphere, is
scenic and conveniently located, and is very challenging. But it is not, I
think, for the novice. In this race only the water is flat.

Re, the club, we proposed that the Board meets every second month;
the general membership might meet more often (when there is a speaker or
some other social / sporting / training event). Some of us probably have tri
videos (Hawaii etc. - I have 3 professional videos from last year, but have
not been able to get a copy of the NBC Olympic Tri video). We could have a
couple of social / video evenings in winter to keep us enthused.

I was just at a meeting of the Board of the running club (GBRC), and
mentioned the tri enterprise. They are very supportive, and suggest we
ensure our calendars are coordinated to avoid event clashes. They would be
happy to carry news of the tri club in the newsletter, so we could put
something in the next one (printed 15 September, so deadline is a week
before). I would be happy to serve as liaison between GBRC and BellTri. I
also mentioned it to Steve Roguski, who owns Fairhaven Runners, and he is
very supportive. He now sells triathlon wetsuits (Ironman & Aquaman).

I am still holding out for the club to be called the Bellingham
TriHards.

P.S. I am going to CdA Nats, expecting to be thoroughly humiliated.

Greetings from the Dictator For Life!!

Last night was the first small group meeting for the club, and we hammered out probably more details than I thought there were to hammer out!!

Anyway, we have this rig runnin' smooth, and after one more small group get-together the Framework for this well-oiled triathlon Machine known as the Bellingham Triathlon Club will be a living entity!!

The date that has been set for the first HUGE group meeting:

September 5th, the first Wednesday of the month, at 7 PM. Place TBA. I will be putting out flyers, noices, press releases, and such to help let people know. I realize school is starting and life happens, but this is more than a month's notice and I am optimistic it will work out ok for the majority. I would really like to see everyone make a big effort to get the word out about this to people who might be interested but are a little shy...This is the first time we will really be a CLUB meeting together, and it will make things easy to have everyone on the same page right off the bat. After that, meetings will be every other month on the first Wednesday.  I am working on a cool location for us. Ideas are most appreciated, so dont be quiet now!!!

Hope to hear from EVERYONE about SOMETHING, soon.

Have fun and happy training!! See you at the races!!

Aaron

Well!  What a weekend. I am back in Bellingham after being Best man at my best buddies wedding, and I had the time of my life! It was so fun, I didnt want to come back. In fact, if any of you are getting married and are having trouble finding a best man, I will offer my services for free. ;o)  I dont even really ever need to be married myself, this was WAY funner than actually getting married appeared. Man, those guys looked STRESSED!!! Anyway...

... Looks like I have my OFFICIAL small group:

Aaron "What's an EASY Ride?" Moss
Paul "I'm not 29? I have another year!!" Kinser,
Jimmy "I've Gotten 50 Flats, Lost, Almost Shot, and Left for Dead All in One Race" Healy,
Jim "Neener Neener, My Wetsuit is Better than Yours" Clevenger
Eric "I'm a Bicycle Pimp" Moe
Luke "I am WAY Too Chill for a Nickname" Nevin

This Wednesday, the 25th, 7 PM, Round Table.  I would like to find a more suitable location for our next BIG group meeting, however. Since this one is small, Round Table will do.

Its almost TOO easy...
