Welcome and congrats on taking on a 1/2 IM. I'm planning my first half at the
end of the summer too. I'm headed for the Black Diamond event as it's closer and
have family in the area down that way.

BUT, after reading different reviews and feedback from different people training
on the Grand Columbian course, I think it will be an excellent event.

Don't know about someone to administer VO2 or Lactate tests but I have used my
5K and 1mile recent time trial "tests" on some web sites that estimate VO2.
You can search for "VO2 estimate race" and find many. here's one:
http://www.worldar.com/endurance/vo2race.htm

As I live up near Lake Whatcom, every long run/ride I get I have the hill to get
home. You can park at Bloedel Donovan and run through Whatcom Falls park and
trails down all the way to the bay and then back. want more mileage, just keep
running all the way along waterfront to Fairhaven.

Allen:

For your down-up run, you might try running from the Galbraith parking lot on
Samish right down to Lake Samish, round the lake, then back up. The hill is
about two miles each way.

Hello to all. I am new to the triathalon and am hoping to do my
first 1/2 ironman in September at Grand Coulee. I do have a few
questoins that maybe you could help me with. First, is Grand Coulee
a good first 1/2 ironman or is there one you that you would
recommend? My next question is do you know where in town I can get a
VO2 test and Lactate Threshold test? I am trying to get to know my
body as best as I can and think that those would help. And my final
question is not about triathalons, but marathons. I am running the
Volcano marathon in July in Hawaii. The course has about a 1000 foot
elevation change and the way it goes is that about the first 13 miles
are down hill and then, of course what goes down must go up, so the
final 13 go up. Do you konw any good training runs that start at the
top of a hill and then run down? I am hoping to find a run that is
about 5-7 miles each way. If you have any ideas or comments I would
appreicate it.

Thank you,

Guys:

Quite a few people who were at the clinic last year came to me later in the season and told me that they had learnt a lot and found the tips very useful. So this really is a worthwhile event, and the participants are eager to learn.

Just yesterday as I was getting out of the water at Padden I was approached by a newbie full of questions. The level of ignorance was almost astonishing; the whole concept of doing the entire race in one set of clothing was novel to him. In other words, it is really easy to do some substantial amount of good ! So I hope lots of you will show up to help.

The one thing I found hard to come to terms with at the clinic last year was the level of the beginners. We tend to make assumptions about what people know and what gear they have, and those assumptions are not really warranted with the audience at the clinic. My advice is to assume almost nothing, and start at the most basic level imaginable.

There were quite a few women last year, and it would be good to see some female 'instructors' again - Kelly helped out last year.

See you there !

If you run from the park by the ferry dock to the big parking lot at the state park and back it is about 14 miles. You can add a few miles by running towards GP along the trails and on the road. I have ran this many times during my training for Marathons. Once I get off the Interurban trail to the state park I usually figure my miles by estimating what my training pace was on the interurban. If I want to do 20 miles and I have been running a 8 minute mile pace I just run 32 minutes after I get off the Interurban and turn around and return to the park. I also try to do different runs daily to keep the runs from getting monotonous.  Good Luck with your Marathon training.

Hi everyone,

I am looking to do my longer runs (14, 16, 18, and 20-milers) on trails around the Bellingham area.  If I had to, I could run the Interurban twice, the Lake Whatcom Trail (North Shore) three times, or Lake Padden 6-8 times (BORING!), but it would be nice to get some variety into my runs!  Does anyone have some favorites that are approximately these distances?  I am really trying to stay off the roads for these long guys.  Any thoughts - advice - warnings you might have would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon

I like to run from the Padden swim area to the radio towers on top of Galbraith. I take the long way around Padden, then the big loop through the woods behind the golf course, and then follow the logging road up the hill. The whole thing is about 15 miles and takes about 2.5 hours. Lots of fairly moderate climbing and downhill; not for the weak-kneed ! It's great in the early morning cool and fresh air, and also on a hot afternoon if you like the sweat to really pour down and you're in the mood to suffer. It also feels good to run easily past the mountain-bikers struggling to ride the long uphill.

Hi all,

Bellingham Parks and Rec is sponsoring a triathlon clinic this Saturday, May 22, from noon until 3 pm at the Lake Padden Swim Area.  The clinic is designed for beginner and intermediate triathletes, and will feature topics such as transitions, bike maintenance, nutrition/hydration, and attire.  Lance Romo, coordinator of this event, is looking for more experienced triathletes willing to either come and help out during the clinic, or who would like to speak on a topic of particular interest to them.  Last year's clinic was wildly popular!  If you would like to help out or speak at the clinic, please call Lance at 647-7665, or e-mail him at lromo@....

Middle-Aged Man Meets the Mile

The 50th anniversary of the first four-minute-mile drew worldwide attention.
Even the Bellingham Herald took notice, printing an article which included the
information that Diane Palmeson had organized an invitational mile at the Civic
Stadium to commemorate the great event. Having quite rightly not been invited to
run, I only half-registered this news. The only reason why I was actually at the
stadium that fateful afternoon was to watch my son run for Sehome in the local
track meet.

Inevitably, Diane caught sight of me at the field and gave me one of her
Piercing Looks. "You Are Going To Run, Aren't You ?" she said, in formidable
tones. Yes, ma'am, I sure am. The problem was that my available running gear
consisted of the trashed running shoes, old race t-shirt and jeans I had worn to
work that day. Partial salvation was at hand, however, in the form of my son in
his Sehome track outfit. I soon found myself adorned in voluminous green
bloomers that flapped around my knees, evidently the proud handiwork of Omar the
Tentmaker. Given that I prefer to race as near naked as legally permissible,
these shorts alone featured twice as much material as I usually wear on my
entire body. Anton had already run the 800m in them, so they were delightfully
sweaty around the crotch and waistband.

There was some confusion at the start when Diane told us to line up. There was
to be an invitational mile and an open mile, but it was not clear who was to run
in which. Diane announced that anyone who could run a six-minute-mile was
welcome in the invitational race, so on the basis that I had probably run at
least one six-minute-mile some time in the last 50 years I decided to go with
the elite. Obviously I wasn't thinking clearly.

There were about ten of us on the line. I recognized some of the usual suspects,
Ed Harri and Craig Bartlett prominent amongst them. The tall dark lean guy who
proclaimed himself a distance runner but ignored my suggestion that he should
accordingly start, oh, say about 400m behind us, turned out to be Scott Jurek,
multiple winner of the Western States 100 and specially imported for the
occasion. I was relieved to see James Holgate, my weekly 10km pace man, there
too - unlike the others, he was not too far outside my pathetically slow class,
and somewhere within a decade of me when it comes to age.

Diane rang the starting bell and the madness commenced. It took all of about 5
seconds for me to drop off the back, while watching James streak off the front
like a greyhound. Maybe he was getting a little TV exposure for his sponsors. I
hung on grimly through the first 200m of near-sprint, but my fate as tail-end
Tjalling was immediately clear. By the end of lap one, with 1:22 gone, I was
already a good 20m back and beginning to hurt.

I knew there was no way I could sustain that speed, but I had to try. On trail
runs nobody sees your pathetic shuffle when you run out of gas, but on the track
there is no place to hide, so honor demanded that I give it my all. I just kept
cranking, having decided to push it as hard as I could and see whether the Wall
or the Finish arrived first. I did appreciate the vocal support of the
spectators, Armando loud amongst them, urging me to hang in there, though I
began to feel lonely with the gap ahead steadily widening. Lap two at 2:48 came
and went. I was already having to dig deep but I was halfway through, and there
seemed to be a reasonable chance that I could make it without totally disgracing
myself.

I rounded the far end of the track and beheld a miracle - James had been spat
out by the pack and was drifting back to me. The crowd roared as I pulled up on
his shoulder, most probably because the leaders had just embarked on the bell
lap a good 200m ahead of us, but I preferred to interpret it as excitement as
this tail-ender redeemed himself with a dramatic pass of the erstwhile
frontrunner. What actually happened was that I hung out by his side and we
matched each other stride-for-stride in what for us was a murderous, barely
sustainable pace. We hit the last lap with 4:24 gone. "One more?" enquired
James, in pained tones. "Yes; we can break six" I gasped back. Indeed, the
six-minute barrier remained attainable if we were prepared to suffer enough. At
least I had achieved one of my modest goals - getting round three times without
being lapped, though the winners were already pounding down the finish straight
as we rounded the first turn yet again.

That last lap was a painful blur. All I saw in my tunnel vision was the bright
red track, the gleaming chrome side-rail, and James's knees as they came in and
out of my peripheral sight. We were both going hard and breathing hard, pushing
each other to hold the pace in a bond of shared pain and focus. We swept round
the last turn to see the wide empty finish straight spread out ahead, with
nothing to distract the crowd but the fight between James and I for last place
as we oldies gave it all in the drive to the line. I was at my absolute limits,
far into the red zone with the warning light on every body system flashing
bright and the buzzers going crazy. Fifty meters out James found a final kick
from somewhere, and I could only watch him slowly inch ahead with long swift
strides as I desperately pushed to the line where Mary was calling off the
seconds: 5:58 she called for James, and then "Six!" as I lunged past the marker.
Yes; I had done it !

My heart, throat, lungs and guts burnt for hours after the race. This short fast
stuff is a world away from the long slow endurance events I usually do, and it
calls on entirely different energy and muscular systems. I felt bad, but pleased
at the same time. In my own small way I had acknowledged the grand achievement
of that first four-minute-mile, and done honor to those who broke the physical
and mental barriers associated with it.

Race Report: Mt. Rainier Duathlon 2004

I previously reported on this race in 2003, so there is no need to repeat more
than the bare outlines here: the race is based on Enumclaw, and it involves an
8.5 km run, a 48 km bike and a 6.5 km run. The last run is a shorter version of
the first, omitting the hilly section; this was the only change between this
year and 2003 when we ran the hills twice. The bike was still two 24km laps,
each involving an ascent and descent of Mud Mountain.

This event is essentially the first long multisport race of the season, and
accordingly attracts a fairly sparse but hardcore crowd. There were about 80
participants on the long course, with 40 more on a shorter version of about half
the distance. The top local women were well represented, in the form of Chris
Farias, Heidi Grimm (Army) and Anne Jensen (who DNFed). I was the only
Bellinghamster there; a big change from last year when half the Bellingham
Triathlon Club seemed to be in attendance.

Race morning brought brilliant sunshine, though the clear skies overnight made
for a chilly start to the day. The snowy cone of Ranier loomed white against the
bright blue sky, dominating the flat green farmlands dotted with dandelions and
bordered by steep heavily forested hillocks. The crisp mountain air and sunny
pastoral setting lightened the mood in the small grassed transition area humming
with athletes and exotic machinery. My humble Cannondale looked rather passe'
amidst the mass of Cervelos, Griffens and Litespeeds, though the bright yellow
spokes on my Xaeros always draw attention.

The race commenced in standard fashion, with a sprint start over the gravel
track around the Fairgrounds and the leaders streaking up the road before I even
got the circulation in my legs going. I was a little annoyed at being passed in
the early stages by a few folks who did not seem particularly competent, but I
knew things would improve as I warmed up. The sounds and pungent smells of farms
were all that distracted us from the broad views and our exertions as we made
our way out over the quiet smooth country roads. I found a good running partner
in the attractive form of Susie from Edmonds; together we soon dispatched the
crowd of pretenders. I was grateful for my weekly 10km pace run, which made the
sustained race speed come easily. Some pleasant conversation helped the hills
pass by as no more than incidental. We efficiently gobbled up the remaining
miles and a few more runners before jogging into T1 with just over 40 minutes
gone.

Exit from T1 involved a brief ride over a loosely graveled surface, not a happy
situation for a skittish racing steed and paranoid rider. I was glad to hit the
paved road and start mashing the big gears, pursuing successive bikers who
showed up in my sights as I wound my way through the twisty course. I counted
off my victims as I flew by, noting that the eighth one (at the start of the
first climb up Mud Mountain) was also racer number 8. I lost track somewhere
around number twelve near the top of the climb, when my brain was no longer
functioning particularly well. I was irritated by a guy I passed on the climb,
who ignored the drafting rules to repass me, and then attempted the same
maneuver again, trying to ride on my inside when I accelerated past him over the
summit. I just turned on the power to blow him away, anger fueling my speed.
Some young guys seem to resent being passed by an old man like me, and then
behave badly.

The road sweeping down the mountain seemed much smoother than last year, just
right for a tight tuck into the aerobars and getting as near terminal velocity
as possible. I still find high speed in the aerobars nerve-wracking despite
years of experience. I am always scared by the very limited and twitchy control
the aerobars provide, and the potential for launching over the front wheel if
you hit a bump when your weight is so far forward. So I stayed well clear of the
road shoulders and was relieved when the road leveled out again.

My second lap on the bike was almost certainly slower than the first. I felt
less edgy and didn't push far outside my comfort zone. I soon found myself
playing leapfrog along the country roads and up the mountain with another strong
rider. We exchanged encouraging words as we hammered our way over the course.
The climb didn't seem as hard this year as last time, though it still made my
sweatband so saturated that it began to act like a dam, with the sweat pouring
over the top whenever I tilted my head. I think we passed a few other
competitors on that lap, but by then we were in the ranks of the faster folks
where it is harder to make an impact. I cranked down the hill as hard as I could
and was gaining ground on a few guys ahead as we turned back onto the gravel and
ran into T2 just in time to see the race winners flying down to the finish line
on the adjacent field.

I had a fast transition and immediately hit a good pace for the run. I surprised
myself by how well I ran that second lap; once again those regular fast 10k's
paid off for me. I expected to be passed by a lot of folks, because everybody I
had passed on the bike had obviously had a faster first run and seemed likely to
repeat their performance on the second run. But as it happened I was not passed
by anyone, and the guys ahead did not gain a lot of ground on me either. There
was a guy in red right on my tail who kept me honest and cranking hard. It
helped to know that we would not have to run the hills so I did not have to be
too conservative. I turned it on over the last half mile just to be sure, and
had a comfortable cushion over my pursuer by the time the finish line came into
sight. It subsequently turned out that if I had passed the fellow in yellow two
ahead of me I would have qualified for Nationals in the 40+ division; not too
shabby for a 50-year-old. While I have no interest in going to duathlon
Nationals it is nice to know I got so close, and my run split compared to my
competitors was also a welcome ego-boost.

It was nice to lie in the sun on the grass, munching muffins and chatting with
fellow competitors as we watched the others finish. I can think of worse ways to
spend a sunny Sunday morning than hanging out on the lawn with Susie and her
gorgeous red-and-yellow Griffen. I knew I had probably won my division, since I
was the only one in it at pre-registration, so I waited for the awards ceremony.
I duly got to add another beer mug to the one I mistakenly won here last year
when they unaccountably aged me up. It was rather more satisfying to see that I
had also beaten all but two of the competitors in the two lower age divisions
(40-44 and 45-49) thanks to my fast bike split and decent runs.

This is a good early-season event on a moderately challenging course, with some
strong competition, and in an attractive rural setting. The atmosphere is very
friendly and low-key. While I have always stayed at a local hotel overnight
prior to the race, it is quite possible to drive down from Bellingham in the
early hours of race morning to make it to the 8am start. My driving time was
only just over 2.5 hours each way in weekend traffic.

Thanks Matt - if we can park there to ride the Baker Cookie tri loop without
having to tangle with Northshore traffic, that's really great.

I see the tri workshop is scheduled for Padden on 5/22. Be aware that the kid's
Ski-to-Sea race is on at the same time. Unfortunately that means I can't help
with the workshop, since I am scheduled to be half of a three-legged-race pair
on some kid's team (giving new meaning to the term TRI-athletes). Don't get in
my way !

In passing, the WWU tri on Saturday was well organized and a lot of fun. Race
report coming.

Greetings all:

My name is Matt Allen. I graduated from Sehome in '95, and went
away to school for a while. Anyhow, I'm in Bellingham and am
training somewhat seriously for an ironman in October '05. My
background is mainly running, but I also ride 3-4X/week. I live
right at the very end or northshore, right before you make that turn
to go up to the trailhead. The house has a gray fence around it,
and I welcome anyone who wants a good place to swim, run, or ride to
give me a jingle. Weekends are always good as is Friday afternoon,
or any day during the week with a days notice. My email address is
fishingking00@..., and look forward to getting into contact
with some fellow triathletes. The address is 3183 north shore.
Right where you make the left to go up to the trail.

Cheers,

definitely getting warmer. I still like the full wetsuit and hood
