Appologize if I mispoke, just meant I felt it would be good if NEMBA
members were involved with this and helped out. Let us know how we
can. Thanks!

I’ve been away a lot lately and will
be travelling on business all week this coming week so won’t be able to
do much. I just got back from Vermont Trail school. Learned how to split
rocks, run a high line (to move heavy stuff around in the woods), evaluate
trail use, evaluate economic impact, etc… It was good, but NEMBA trail
building school was better. Vermont
seems really organized. It’s great to see what Vermont’s got going on. They had one
project where they re-routed part of the Catamount XC ski trail and a
snowmobile trail. Took 7 YEARS to get approval and then it had to be completed
by October of this year, which they did.
Thanks Harry/Ruth for the trail work on
Pudgies!
I’m all for Jeff’s idea of
having a race at HF – as a NEMBA fundraiser, but I’m sure it can’t
be a NEMBA event. We can discuss at the meeting.
Doug Bruce from Berkshire Natural
Resources Council should be there. We’ll talk with him about plans
first, then let him go and discuss fundraising and anything else you’d
like.
I think we would need to ask Phil Keyes- NEMBA has some very strict rules about getting involved with racing- I know once I asked him about insurance for the HF races and he said they weren't allowed to do that but I'm not sure about what the $$$ part of it is, surely just NEMBA members volunteering time would be allowed. Jeff,
We'd like to help out with this. Feel that NEMBA being the sponsor
is a good idea. Let us know what we can do to help you out.

Harry I added your time to the database. Harry and I sniped Pudgy's
trail this am- it wasn't too overgrown, just a lot of prickers and
stuff hanging in your face. I took some video on my camera and Brads
camera- Brad- its pretty stupid but I can't figure out how to watch the
video on your camera- on mine there is a play button for simpletons...I
have an idea for a trail up there- will discuss at the meeting which
BTW is it all set ip for sure? We should publize it if it is. Ruth
Hello Nemba/NoRules folks
For the past three years I have run a MTB race at Holiday Farm in
Dalton as part of the Rt 66 race series (the premier MTB race series
in NE). I have associated this with a different group of cyclist but
would like to have NEMBA support it and to use as a fund raiser for
the Berkshire NEMBA chapter. Dicken Crane is obviously very open to
us using the land and has supported us for years.
I rec'd this email from Jill and Chris (the Rt 66 promoters) about
the Arc shop looking to help out but I wanted to first bring it in
front of the NEMBA/NoRules crew as an idea. I hesitate to associate
it with a single shop as this then eliminates the other shops - maybe
a co promoted race with Berkshire Bike and Board and Arc shop?? Or
two race weekend with each taking one race>?? At the same time I
hate to give up on getting offered support as that is a rarity
In past the race has made between $500 and $2500. The earlier
season race dates tend to have bigger fields and therefor make more
$$. The proposed (below) date in August was what we did last year
and the turnout was a little lower - but we still made $500. With a
festival type idea it might be more profit..... also I wonder about
camping at Olsen Rd and utilizing the PSF trails for a formal
event........ seems like some amazing trails to race on, BUT that
would open trails up to a lot of use...... double edged sword.......
What are thoughts>?
It would need 2-3 people to function as race committee and about 10
people for race day support and a few extras for set up and take
down.... A discourse would be appreciated Jeff Kellogg

Hi Jeff, I know, hard to believe I'm already looking into 2009 but I
am.....................the folks at the Arcadian Shop in Dalton have
expressed an interest in hosting a race and I believe they are
willing to work with an already established venue and promoter which
of course your race would be the perfect fit. Is this something you
would be interested in looking into and possibly having them work
with you for your event or are you thinking you are happy as is???
It is your decision obviously but if you think its something that
will work for you let me know and I will put you in touch with the
interested contact person. On a different but similar note.......
NEMBA hosts a fallish festival each year and for the past three years
it has been in conjunction with our Landmine event. Phil Keyes the
President of NEMBA expressed an interest in moving to a different
location but still staying connected with our race weekends and I
thought Holiday Farm may be the perfect venue for this and I would
look for an August date as our last race of the season for 2009 is
tentatively 9/12ish. Let me know your thoughts...................
Hope all is well. Jill
Saturday I am going to snip/remove down trees on Pudgy"s trail for the
Berkshire Natural Resources Council. Any help would be great.
Meet at 9:30 am at the gate on the road that goes over Lenox Mt
towards Olivias Overlook from the Lenox side. Maps call it Richmond Mt
Rd but I don't know if there is a sign or not. From the center of
Lenox go just past Tanglewood stay right and go about a mile to a pull
off on the right with a gate- that goes up Old Baldhead Rd to Monks
Pond. Its before the road goes uphill to the top where Olivias
Overlook is.
If you need snips I will bring extra NEMBA snips with me- shouldn't be
a huge job if we get a few people. And then you can ride from there too!
Ruth
I’m going to a trail building class up in Vermont next weekend. I
think I can do the following weekend. I could always give you guys a camera.

I just talked to Doug Bruce at the Berkshire Natural Resources Council
and offered to help out. He was VERY enthusiastic and wants us to
BUILD NEW TRAILS!!! How cool is this? They are a wonderful
organization and we should do everything we can to support them since
they keep all their land open to non-motorized vehicles and openly
welcome MTB. And BTW they own property all over the Berkshires, not
just on Lenox Mountain.
First off though we need to weed wack/snip/remove downed trees on
Pudgys trail- I will try to set up a date we can do that. With a few
people it shouldn't be a big deal. There is only one string attached:
before we do any work we need to document it in photos and then take
after photos. I think we can handle that!
He would also be happy if we could make that stone "walk" on the
lower Burbank Trail more mountain bike friendly- I'm sure we could
figure something out!!! He isn't happy that the mountain bikers are
avoiding the stones and riding thru the mud but understands its not
very rideable!
He also asked if we could remove two down trees on the Charcoal trail-
they are 18 inches and require a chain saw. Can anyone tackle this job
ASAP? (With photos) The Charcoal trail starts at Olivias overlook-
there are two trails on the parking lot side of the road- the lower
one is the Charcoal, the upper one is the Walsh. Let me know if you
can help out. Thanks Ruth

With the leaves coming down, I was able to find loads of trees with
plastic flagging still up today (42 but who's OCD....). Removed all I
could find but, probably a bunch are still there. If you see any while
riding Turner take a sec and remove them.
Mike
I was up at DAR State Forest and NEMBA has done quite a bit of bridge work up there. On some of the bridges, they routered "NEMBA" into the first board on the bridge. I thought that was really cool.
It got me thinking we should really create a sign for the Turner Trail which says:
Turner Trail Reconstruction 2008 Berkshire NEMBA
Or something to that effect. Maybe make two - one for the top, one for the bottom. What do you think? Anyone got a router and skills to use one? I bought one once and couldn't do anything with it.
I'd be willing to stain/paint it after it was done... but even that... I pretty much suck at. :-)

I think I'm going to go up to this. I'd like to learn about rock
splitting and shaping and some of the other topics. I think I might
go up to the Millstone Trails on Friday, camp out Friday, go to
school Saturday, camp out, ride Sunday AM, then come home.
If you register at: www.vermonttrailsandgreenways.org before 10/10,
it's $25 (+$4 camping).

I really want to thank everyone who helped out on the Turner Trail. I hope you all feel very proud of what we accomplished on that project. I know it wasn't easy and it doesn't seem like it's going to get any easier dealing with the State, but I hope you'll all be tougher than that and continue to do great work like this for more trails and the mountain biking community.
Seems all the state workers are… but
that’s great! I hope we can go do something down there.
Ruth – when were you going to find
out about stuff in KennedyPark? October
sometime, but I forget.
