Re: [BentPacNW] Looking for recumbent dealers in Seattle area

Steven,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I have noticed that they seem to be a lot heavier. Mind you my old bike was a rusty 20 yr old, 40lb mountian bike. My new bike is 1/2 AL and 1/2 carbon, and was 18 lbs until I put the fenders, rack, light, etc on it.  Are those materials used in used in recumbents? How much of a difference does weight make? I would expect that it would be most impactful on hills and fast starts.

How fast are you of the line? The few that I see are quite slow. The only area that I currently need to be quick is between International District and my office (2nd & Union). I am sure that I would be able to figure out another route if the bike was not capable of a fast start.

How are they for visibility - both seeing and being seen? I see some with flags, but they seem very low.

You mentioned the STP. How are recumbents for touring? Will I be able to use my panniers on the recumbent? I just bought a pair of Ortleib bags for the wet winter.
David

Hi Dave,
I Have been riding recumbent for about 8 years now. I have a bad back and that is the reason I ride a recumbent. I am faster on the bent except going
up long steep hills. but I make it up on the down hill and straights. To use a recumbent for commuting. I would look for short wheel base with above steering with 2 big red flasher in the back and a  white one in the front! I get a numb ness in the legs too. riding a recumbent has helped my back. I have
done the STP in one day. Four times now. when I am on my road bike, I can barely make 60mi and my back is killing me.

The big recumbent dealer in Seattle area is Angle Lake Cyclery. 20804 Pac. Hwy. So.  (206) 878-7457   Dale

Subject: [BentPacNW] Looking for recumbent dealers in Seattle area

I am looking to make the move from a traditional road bike to
a `bent', and have a few questions
1 - Any suggestions or knowledgeable dealers that have stock and fit
bikes? I need to find someone who knows their stuff and have bikes I
can try.
2 - Do any of you commute to downtown Seattle on a recumbent? I am
concerned about visibility and the ability to go fast quickly. I
ride along 3rd with buses in the AM and 2nd Avenue with the crazy
cars in the PM.

For a bit of background: I live in Newcastle and ride a traditional
road bike 15 miles to work in Seattle year round. I am generally in
good operating condition, but have a few structural issues -broke my
back 12 years ago in a car accident, and broke both wrists falling
off my roof and skiing. Anyhoo, I am starting to have problems with
my arms and one leg going numb and tingling. The doctor thinks that
biking is a contributing factor. I do not want to join the car
crawl, and have heard that a recumbent might be a good option. I
have never ridden a 'bent', but have seen a few on the road and they
look comfy.

Thanks in advance for your advice and information.
