Spice Up Your Long Run With These Five Tips

1. Friend to Friend Relay!
You might not be able to convince one friend to run the whole distance with you if they aren't ready, but you can station friends at different points to each run a leg with you. Another idea is to do a loop course where you run each loop with a different friend. Running with a buddy can make the miles pass quickly and break up the monotony of a long run.

2. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
Taking energy drinks and gels during a long run is important to replace electrolytes and prevent glycogen depletion. However, your body will take any kind of sugar it can get. Try sucking on a piece of your favorite hard candy during the run for a little boost. Be careful running with something in your mouth!

3. Carry Some Cash
Most running shorts have a key pocket for a key of course. Slip a $20 bill in there as well - you never know when you might need a snack...or a taxi! Better to be safe than sorry.

4. Fun with Computers
Go to usatf.org/routes/ and check out "America's Running Routes." The searchable database allows runners to map and measure their favorite course. You can even save your run so others can enjoy the pain and misery that you went through...just kidding!

5. The ABC Game
Play "I'm going to the marathon and I'm going to bring..." Start with the letter A and make it all the way to Z - it will take your mind off the miles for awhile.

Support A Good Cause - The BackStoppers

You may have noticed that you can make a donation to The BackStoppers when you register for a Spirit of St. Louis Marathon Weekend event. Since 1959, this organization has served the families of police officers and firefighters in the greater metro St. Louis area who have perished in the line of duty. They have one purpose: to ease the suffering, and provide the much needed financial assistance to spouses and their dependent children. Areas served by The BackStoppers are the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, Jefferson County, Lincoln County, St. Francis County, Warren County, Madison County, St. Clair County and Monroe County. Visit www.stlouismarathon.com and look up "Battle of the Badges" for details.
