I don't know what to think of the Patriots now because of this cheating issue. You know something, if we cheated at school or college, we would be punished severely. Also, six years ago, I admitted I cheated on Beat Mike, my pick'em game by changing someone's pick and so I sat out the rest of the season and playoffs. I have learned my lesson since then because for Year 4, someone wanted me to e-mail my picks when I do the newsletter. I felt that way was stupid and stoped doing it on Year 5. I think the punishment should be coach Bill gets a 8-game suspension and a $1M fine. I do not think the team should lose any draft picks because it was not their fault, unless they come forward and say so. I am not even sure if I will continue to follow the Patriots because of this. I have Patriots plates on my car and depending what happens, I probably want to turn them in for the American Flag license plate or a vanity plate. What is your opinion on this?

Mike

I can't believe this is the second week, but I just got this news at work. I got a phone call at 5:16PM today from a 303 number. They asked who they were speaking to. I told them Mike. Then told me that they were from KOA AM 850 in Denver. Yes I did enter the contest that they were running and yes, I was listening to the game yesterday. Basically, the contest was to predict the halftime and final score of the Denver game and if both are correct, the winner would receive $85,000 from Cricket Wireless and KOA AM 850. Out of all of the entries they had, they selected my entry. Ok, I predicted DENVER 10, OAKLAND 0 for the halftime score and DENVER 24, OAKLAND 10 for the final score. What do you think of the scores? Did I pick the right scores? Do you think I will win $85,000? Let me know.

Thank You,
Mike

P.S. If you want to enter this contest and have a chance at $85,000, you can. Just text CRICKET to 62855 or 68255, not sure which one it is, on your cell phone for your chance.

Season 9, Week 2

Greetings everyone! Wow! 3 games were won on winning field goals, including the one I listened to on the radio as time expired to have Denver win 15-14 over Buffalo. I think my fantasy football team in the MFL will start the season at 1-0. Now, let me get something straight with all of you. I do not and will not change the settings on Yahoo! Pick’em because it would not be fair for everyone else! They wanted the settings changed to have each pick due 5 minutes before it gets kicked off. I can not do that because it would be too much work for me. I can, however, allow you to send your picks for games played on Sunday and Monday to be sent by 12:55PM (ET) if there are Thursday or Saturday games that week. Ok, here’s the games for week 2:

As some of you may know, one of my former classmates was killed in Iraq almost two weeks ago. I had the honor of going to high school with him. Even though at first, I wasn't sure if I knew him or not, but as the time got closer to the wake and funeral, it came clear to me that I probably did meet him at school and I probably did talk to him at least once or twice. There were a lot of people at both the funeral and the wake. Also, all of the local TV stations were at the funeral, WSHM (67), WWLP (22) and WGGB (40). Even NECN was there. I felt honored to go to both of the services. This was also the second time this year that I went to services of someone that was under the age of 30. I do compare some of the things of Jeremy Boufford and Sean O'Brien. Even though I did dedicate this week for Sean O'Brien, I feel that this week should also be dedicated for Jeremy Boufford. So, Week 1 will be dedicated to both Sean O'Brien and Jeremy Boufford. May both of them rest in peace. Here's the TV listings for Week 1:

Beat Mike
Season 9, Week 1

Greetings everyone! Thank you for joining Beat Mike for it’s 9th Season. Wow! Nine seasons all ready. Where have the time gone? Well, next year, it will be a decade. I enjoy serving you each and every NFL season. I hope to continue to serve you until the day I die, but I hope that does not happen for a long time. That would not be good, would it? How was your summer everyone? This year, I have extended the fan base a little. I have expanded into Facebook. Now, I have three areas where people will be playing, by e-mail, by Yahoo! Pick’em, by MySpace and by Facebook. Also, if you are not able to play by any of those formats or not able to go on a computer, you can call the Beat Mike line at (407) 232-2895 and leave a message with your picks. Play is still the same. You pick the teams that you think will win and if they win, you will score a point for each pick. I will explain the format of the playoffs in the latter part of the newsletter. But you do know that:  Regular season: Weeks 1-17. Playoffs: Weeks 18-21. In order to get credit for your picks, you will need to have your picks made (on Yahoo! Pick’em) or sent (by e-mail, MySpace and Facebook) by the deadline set each week or you will not credit for that week.

I forgot to mention that Week 1 is dedicated to Sean Joseph O’Brien. Sean was a great guy and for most of you that didn’t know him, he was a one of a kind. He was 27 years old and was killed on May 5 in a motorcycle accident. I will post the article later in the newsletter. I will also dedicate this week to one of the greatest NAFCA members that there has ever been, Roger Swallow. I will not post his obit on here.

I think it is time to rock and roll and get to the games of Week 1!

NEWS:
1. I know that this event is not until October 28, but I have some news for you. For the past three years, I have walked in the Rays of Hope Breast Cancer Walk at Forest Park in Springfield. For the second year in a row, I have formed my very own team called the BMN Pals (BMN=Beat Mike Network). I invite you to join my team. If you would like to join my team for the walk, please go to the web site http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=228840 and click on the register here button. When you do, for team, select BMN Pals. If you have any problems getting to that link, you can go to google.com or any search engine and type in “Rays for Hope.” You should connect then. Also, if I am able to, I will need to know your shirt size so that I can get you a shirt for the walk. After the walk, we will all go to a local restaurant to have pizza or a luncheon. There are two paths you can walk. The 5 mile (8 KM) or the 2 mile (3.2 KM).
If you are unable to join us for the walk, then you are welcome to sponsor me in the walk at  http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=228840 or you can even sign up and do the virtual walk. No matter where you are from, you can still help us out!!!!

2. Tuesday, September 11, 2007 will mark the 6th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks. Please honor those who have served or are currently in the service. Please make sure that you honor Jeremy Boufford, the Middlefield resident who was killed in Iraq on August 22. He was in the class of 2004 at Gateway. I will post his obit later in this newsletter.

3. For those who are receiving this as a member of a Bills Backer chapter or a Browns Backer chapter, I welcome you. To the presidents of those chapters, if there are any members that want to play my game, please forward this to them and have them e-mail me their picks.

4. This year, Beat Mike is going to be sponsored by Consumer United. You can money on auto insurance and electric rates and soon on cable TV, cell phone, landlines, and so much more! You can go on www.consumerunited.com to sign up! Also, when you get your quote, please make sure you tell them that Mike DiMauro sent you.

5. Here’s the article from WWLP on Sean O’Brien:
Granby Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash
GRANBY, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) A Granby family of avid motorcycle riders is trying to make sense of how their son died in a crash this weekend.
Twenty-seven-year-old Sean O'Brien had been riding motorcycles since he was 16 and his parents say he always put safety first when on his bike. Raymond O'Brien says he has lost his best friend, his son, Sean.
Chicopee police Lt. Richard Nunes says 27-year-old Sean O'Brien died when he rear-ended a car on Memorial Drive early Saturday morning. Nunes says speed and alcohol played a role in the deadly motorcycle crash.
Raymond O'Brien says, "We are on our way to the funeral home right now. I got up the other night and I heard something. I thought he was coming in because it hasn't really hit me that he isn't with us anymore."
Raymond told 22News Sean always wore the proper gear and never cut costs when purchasing things like a helmet.
Just two days after Sean O'Brien died on Memorial Drive in Chicopee, another accident with a motorcycle happened just yards from where O'Brien died.
Witnesses say the car in front of the motorcycle stopped short Monday afternoon. That's when the bike hit the bumper and the rider went flying, frighteningly similar to Saturday's fatal crash.

Mike,

I am on the Board of a Catholic High School in Baltimore. As part of our fundraising efforts, each year we raffle chances to a Ravens Game. This year it is the Monday Night game against the Pats. The School is Archbishop Curley High School. Raffle tickets cost $25 each. There are only 750 tickets sold. There will be three winners of 10 tickets each to the game, including pre game activities. Would there be any interest from any of your fans?

I just saw the list of the final 25 candidates for Red Sox Nation President and my name is not on that list. Don't feel bad for me. I did what I could and I have to move on. There are other people that would do a great job. I am all ready the president of Beat Mike and I am running for the president of Berkshire 10 of the North American Family Campers Association and that election will be in September at the Mass. Fall Frolic. Let's get on with the 9th season of Beat Mike and if you want to play Beat Mike this year, please contact me ASAP!

Thank You,
Mike

P.S. If they have this contest again in 2008, I will consider putting my name into the ring again.

Mike ... This is hilarious. I hate the Red Sox and Pats - and I went to BC, meaning that I'm not crazy about Umass, either. The readers here would roar at the idea that a Mike DiMauro is running for president of Red Sox Nation.

I'd actually like to do a column on it. Can I call you this week?

Mike

Hey! I was searching the web for my name and Red Sox Nation on Google and your name came up. Actually, we both share the name Mike DiMauro. I am running for Red Sox Nation President. It's pretty cool that someone with the same name as me is a sports editor for a newspaper. I love sports. I love the Red Sox, Patriots, Minutemen (UMass), Broncos (Denver), and NASCAR. I also run a pro pick'em league call Beat Mike. I am surprised that I did not see your name on the list of candidates for Red Sox Nation President. The Mike DiMauro that is on the list is for me. Thank You, Mike DiMauro

Merv Griffin left behind many fans.
The TV legend passed away early this morning.
"The Insider" has confirmed that MERV GRIFFIN passed away early Sunday morning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The legendary entertainer slipped away at 3 a.m. His son TONY was by his side. He was 82 years old.

It was reported earlier this week that the prognosis for Merv -- who was being treated for a second bout of prostate cancer -- wasn't looking good, but his reps wouldn't confirm or deny.
Merv was the creator and producer of the popular game shows "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune." "Wheel of Fortune" host PAT SAJAK tells "The Insider," "The loss of a dear friend has made it difficult to focus on Merv's enormous contribution to the world of entertainment. That will come in time; for now, like his family and so many of his close friends, I'm dealing with deep sadness and the realization that I will never hear that wonderful laugh of his again. He meant so much to my life, and it's hard to imagine it without him."
CBS Enterprises and King World Productions CEO ROGER KING says, "Merv Griffin was the greatest producer we ever dealt with. He gave us a chance with 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'Jeopardy.' The history shows he was right. I will miss him dearly."
Longtime friend NANCY REAGAN said, "This is heartbreaking, not just for those of us who loved Merv personally, but for everyone around the world who has known Merv through his music, his television shows and his business.  Ronnie and I knew Merv for more years than I can even remember -- more than 50, I'm sure.  He was a dear, dear friend and we became even closer in the last 15 years.  He was there for me on some of the hardest days when Ronnie was fighting Alzheimer's and he was there for me every day after Ronnie died.  Merv meant the world to me.  I will miss him -- and his brilliant smile, his wonderful voice, and the twinkle in his eyes -- every day for the rest of my life. My love and prayers are with Tony and the entire family."

Despite his illness, the ever-upbeat "Jeopardy!" creator had planned on hosting the 53rd annual gala on October 19th for the Young Musicians Foundation at the Beverly Hilton, which he had done for the past four years.
"I'd rather play 'Jeopardy!' than live it," he said in a statement at the time of his hospitalization. "I was ready for a vacation; however this wasn't the destination I had in mind."
At that time Merv asked for his well-wishers, in lieu of sending him flowers, to donate to the Young Musicians Foundation, which he chairs.

In addition to being a game show impresario, he was also a former singer and band leader, and served as host of his own TV talk show, which ran from 1962-1986. In 2005, the veteran entertainer was honored at the Daytime Emmys with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

From a nurse:

I'll never forget the look in my patient’s eyes when I had to tell them

they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast.

I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in

The hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were

tied by the insurance companies.

So there I sat with my patients, giving them the instructions they needed

to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of

what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke

louder than the quiet 'Thank You' they muttered.

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to

remove cancerous breast cells/tissue.

If you know anyone who has had a Mastectomy, you may know that there is a

lot of discomfort and pain afterwards.

Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an

outpatient procedure.

Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days

after surgery.

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important .. Please take the time

and do it really quick!

Please send this to everyone in your address book.

is one of those times.

If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take t h e 30

seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others.

You know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will

require Insurance Companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for

patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through

mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after

surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia

and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their Web page with a petition

I was reading through an old Campfire Chatter that I got from November 1976 and I noticed that there were 130 chapters in 13 states. The states that had chapters were (chapters in 2007 are in italic) Connecticut (7, 20, 23, 35, 42, 45, 50, 53, 54, 68, 71, 72, 73, 76, 81, 82, 86, 90, 103, 108, 115, 124, 144, 152, 155), Georgia (138), Maine (33, 37, 43, 64, 97, 98, 126, 137, 140, 160, 162, 167, 168), Massachusetts (Eastern: 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 22, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 44, 46, 47, 49, 52, 56, 62, 65, 70, 83, 91, 110, 111, 127, 131, 146, 157, 166; Western: 8, 10, 21, 51, 60, 61, 77, 88, 94, 114, 149, 159, 163), Nebraska (107), New Hampshire (9, 17, 29, 38, 39, 40, 41, 57, 66, 74, 75), New Jersey (85, 87, 116, 133, 134, 135, 141, 158), New York (80, 101, 112, 120, 125, 128, 143, 145), Oregon (132), Pennsylvania (106, 142), Rhode Island (3, 48, 84, 164, 165), Vermont (1, 59, 69, 96, 102, 117, 129, 136, 139, 150), Virginia (130) and Quebec (156). Pretty interesting, huh?

Hello everyone! This is the final week of the "Allow Fair Competition for Auto Insurance in Massachusetts" (AFCFAIMA) petition before I send it to Governor Deval Patrick, Commissioner Nonnie Burnes, MA Division of Insurance, State Senators Stan Rosenburg & Steve Boniconti, and State Rep. Rosemary Sandlin. I will send the petition when I am down in Pennsylvania on vacation because I did not want to get it postmarked in Massachusetts. I would love for you to sign the petition. I would love your friends and family to sign the petition. I would love everyone not from Massachusetts to sign it to help support us! Everyone from the United States, Canada, everywhere around the world!

I found out that Massachusetts is not the only state to follow the rest of the country. Ontario does not follow rest of Canada on auto insurance. Here's what I mean (thanks Jon Postman):

"hey did you know that every other province except ontario has cheaper insurance then ontario. Ontario (and possibly eastern provinces havent looked into the east yet) is the only province that is not government regulated basicly meaning the government doesnt put caps on our insurance. For instance a 16 yr old driver in alberta, bc, manitoba, and sask driving a 1996 regular cavalier 4 dr pays under $1600.00 for full coverage. The quotes for ontario range from $2800.00 to $6800.00 lets keep in mind i only bought the car for $1500.00... Any of that seam a little bit fucked up to you. The system is mangled in ontario and its getting raised again the insurance companies just went to the government and got permission to raise the insurance prices. In all the provinces west of ontario insurance prices for liability stay the same no matter what vehicle you drive for isntance i could drive a ford gt and if i only got liability i'd be paying $1200.00 a year."

"It makes it almost impossible for anyone from the ages of 16-24 to have any money in their pocket. If your paying $5000.00 a year on car insurance at the age of 19 driving a buick regal, with a completly clean record. That add's up to probably quarter of his yearly income, not including gas (which is a completly other story) So if an average 19 yr old makes $12.00 an hour working 10 hours a day, 250 days a year (thats taking vacations out and weekends he'l bring home 30 grand gross. Now take away taxes, thats about a 1/3 of it. Take away gas payments thats atleast another $3000.00. that already brings you to $17000.00 then insurance. Basicly your insurance almost add's up to paying half of your annual mortgage rate. You get the point i could go on and on. However the problem is that no one has stepped in to do something about it. Alberta people started complaining it changed, let alone they even had the police complaining because too many people were driving without insurance"

"which is the same thing that is happening in ontario but they think by giving people a fine of $4000.00 is gunna stop people. Hell no not when ur paying more for insurance then what the ticket is. Its time tho that someone needs to do something about it send letters to the govt, im going to be starting my own facebook group very soon and hopefully through doing that i'll be getting a bill in to get the government to break down on it and change everyone, put caps on it that are alot lower or let the insurance companies be government ran. Anyways gimme your thoughts i posted a hell of alot but i got alot more to say about it too lol anyways sorry for blabing on look for my facebook group in a couple weeks and be a part of changing the insurance prices"

You know that I am in support for Jon and the rest of Ontario for their situation. I hope they are on our support for us in Massachusetts. I think Massachusetts and Canada should be allowed to have competition for auto insurance. If they can do that for life insurance or health insurance or for home loans, WHY NOT FOR AUTO INSURANCE!!!!! Please sign the petition! I have over 100 signatures all ready, but more are better my friends and family! http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/AFCFAIMA. I want to thank all of you who all ready signed it and I hope for more signatures!

Thank You,
Mike

Hello, everyone!

Believe it or not - we have already had our kick off meeting for the Rays of Hope teams!! Time to start getting excited about walking in Forest Park on October 28, 2007!

We are very excited that this year will mark our 2nd year with a Rays of Hope team!! WOOHOO!! For new members....the monies raised through Rays of Hope goes towards finding a cure for breast cancer! The money all stays locally--for research, to help women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer--team members are true heroes to the thousands of men & women who have been touched by breast cancer! EVERYONE is welcome to join our team...Beat Mike Players and their friends and families.....everyone! You choose the length of the walk you'd like--2.5 miles or 5 miles--or, you can be a 'virtual walker' (explained below).

Before we go any further, I would like to say welcome to our new co-Captain, Vice President of the Beat Mike Network, Josh Pratt. He has been there for me and though he did not walk with us last year, he did help us out and our team. I would like to announce for any reason if Josh can not fulfill his position, I would like to announce that Earl McClain will take over Josh Pratt's spot.

We have lots of exciting things in the works...lots of ideas, including perhaps doing a "PINK PARTY"....a spaghetti dinner, perhaps, with a DJ and all....we could all sell tickets and that would be an easier way for some of us to raise the money we want to raise for this important event! We are working on that now....we are checking into halls and dates and all those things right now...but we will keep you posted on that as details become available!!

Now....speaking of fundraising and walking for the team.....it is time to start forming our team this year!

We're excited to let you know that it is SOOO simple to register this year!!  By registering online, you can do fundraising online and show everyone who BMN really is!! This GREAT tool helps you to create your own personal webpage (it really is easy to do....trust us!) - and by doing this, you can then send emails to friends, family, co-workers--everyone you know--both locally AND across the country to ask for their support...there are no limits!!! The website even gives you emails you can choose so you don't have to write your own!! You can personalize it with your own picture, or use one of the ones they have for you!

On a personal note - I did set up a page last year, since I am not good at asking people for donations....I sent it to some family/friends....I raised about $200 within a couple days!!! I could NOT believe who donated!! Try everyone you know--you never know how cancer has affected someone and they may want the chance to help. The #1 reason people don't give is because nobody asked....

So - take some time right NOW to do this....it is FREE and EASY...

1. Go to www.baystatehealth.com/raysofhope and click on the "Create Your Own Fundraising Webpage" link.

2. On the bottom of that page, click "Get Started By Creating Your Own Webpage Now"

3. On the next page, click on the "Register Here" button.

4. Read the disclaimer and click "I agree".

5. Click "Join a Team"

6. Go down to the bottom of the next screen and choose your team "BMN Pals"

Follow the prompts - you will choose your own username and password....you can then choose your background and picture and even write your own story....check out my website...I personalized mine using a picture from a previous walk I did in Boston....you can do anything you'd like...but please use this tool....it's great and it works....

We need to know if you'd like to join us for the walk by September 10.....we have to give Rays of Hope the t-shirt count. If you are walking and would like a t-shirt this year, YOU MUST 1. REGISTER ONLINE AND THEN EMAIL MIKE WITH YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE OR 2. CALL OR EMAIL JOSH PRATT OR EARL McCLAIN (536-0002, 364-9066) OR MIKE (478-2738) TO LET US KNOW YOU ARE WALKING AND TO LET US KNOW YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE. Again....the sooner we get the count the better.....so please take a moment to register online and email me or call me with your t-shirt size.....even if you use the online tool, we'll need you to call or email us with your t-shirt size.

If you cannot join us for the walk this year, we surely understand....if you'd like to do a "virtual walk", go to the website above and you can register to do that if you'd like to still get donations to help the cause. Or...stay tuned....we'll be letting you know if we are able to coordinate the spaghetti dinner, as well....all will be welcome to that, too!

Thank you so much for your continued love and support over the past 2 years....take care...stay healthy.....and of course, enjoy the camping season!!

P.S. I did use Sherri Langevin's message to send this out, but it was done up well that I needed to use (with my changes, of course). Thanks Sherri and we all enjoy you!

P.S.S. Please join! We need at least ten people to join to get our t-shirts! Thank You!

P.S.S.S. For any of those who don't know what Beat Mike or BMN is well it's my fantasy sports program I run. It's first and most popular game that started was the pro pick'em game which will be in it's 9th season in September. It was like Beat Carlos of the Union News (now the Republican).

Hi Friend

You have received an invitation from to support the following petition http://petitionspot.com/petitions/ .

Hello everyone. As some of you may know, there are companies like Geico and All State trying to get customers in every state, except for Massachusetts. The reason why competition is not allowed in Massachusetts is because they set a rate that everyone has to pay. If every other state in this nation can have competition, why can't Massachusetts have competition for auto insurance. How come Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and other states can have accident forgiveness and not Massachusetts. Why are their ads being played on TV and radio in this state? Should something that is being advertised on TV and radio be available to those in Massachusetts? If Coke and Pepsi can compete for soda in this state, why can't Geico or All State compete for auto insurance? How would you feel if the only supermarket in the state is Stop Shop and all of it's stores have to sell products by the prices that the state has set? That would not be fair, would it? Competition is everywhere. This is the United States of America! Isn't it Massachusetts a state in the United States of America? If you agree with what I am saying in this e-mail and if you want competition for auto insurance in Massachusetts, please click on this site and sign my petition: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/AFCFAIMA. I know that I would ask only Massachusetts residents to sign the petition, but since I am trying to get as many signatures that I can, then everyone is welcome to sign it! All I ask is that you do not use fake names and please use your full name! This is a real petition and it will be sent to Governor Deval Patrick, Commissioner Nonnie Burnes, and my state rep. and senator. Thank You, Mike DiMauro P.S. Please let all of your family and friends know about this petition, so that they can sign it also. The more signatures I get, the more impact that it can bring to allowing competition for auto insurance!

Petition Statement: As some of you may know, Massachusetts is the only state that does not allow competition for auto insurance and the big name companies such as Geico and All State are not in this state. The state's auto insurance are all one price for everyone and they have to go by this price. With competition, you would allow the benefits of what the other states have. It is not fair that Massachusetts has to be the only state that does not allow competition. If Coke and Pepsi can compete in Massachusetts, then wouldn't you want Geico and All State to compete in Massachusetts? If the ads can be shown on TV or aired on the radio in this state, should we be able to get the service? If you sign this petition, you agree that competition should be allowed for auto insurance.

It is for a good cause, so please take the time to visit the petition and support it by signing it.

Thank you.
