Hey everyone, please vote on Tuesday! I just want to let you know something though. I had my decision made since this person decided to run for President. I want to let you know that if you vote for this person, he will make sure you have jobs and a clean place to live. He will make sure that by helping now, that your children/grandchildren won't have to pay for it later. Oh yeah, what happened to WMD's? Where are they? You can probably figure out who I am talking about, right? Get your hands together for John F. Kerry! John Kerry knows what you need and when he becomes president, he'll see that you get it! He'll make sure that the environment is the best that it has seen, because GWB didn't do anything. Kerry will also make sure that you get medicare at low prices, because GWB set them at high prices. Kerry will make sure that you have a job that you can earn money, because GWB lost jobs for Americans for the first time since the Great Depression. Don't let GWB be your president for another four years, because he'll do the worse job as president that we have seen in a while. By the way, let history repeat! John Adams only served one term. John Quincy Adams only served one term. George H.W. Bush only served one term. Let's make sure that George Walker Bush only serves one term as our President!

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!
Mike

POLL QUESTION: I did a question like this back during the 2000 Election. I decided to do it again this year. Please e-mail me your answer to the following question with your picks this week: Who do you want to win the election this year for President?

John Kerry
George W. Bush
Ralph Nader

NOTES:
1. We do flip our clocks back one hour this weekend. Please make sure you do that and get your extra hour of sleep. Also, the time listed as the deadline is for EST, not EDT.
2. As you may notice, the e-mail this week is in black background and white text. If you e-mail me your picks, please make sure it is in black text on a white background or in white text on a black background. Please don't do black on black or white on white. It will be too hard to read, LOL!
3. Hello everyone! I  walked a five mile walk to find a cure for Breast Cancer yesterday and it was great. My feet were tired, my legs were hurting me, and I just wanted to let you know that I raised $101 for the walk at Forest Park in Springfield. I donated $26 of the $101. Out of the $26, I donated 10% of the tips I made Saturday night at work plus five cents for every correct pick done for Week 6 (231 correct picks x 5 cents per correct pick = $11.55). Anyways, I would like to invite you to come walk with me to find a cure for Breast Cancer at Forest Park in Springfield in 2005. I think it will be on October 23, 2005, but I am not sure.
4. Make sure that you watch the Red Sox take on the Cardinals in the World Series on Fox (Locally: 25, 61, 64). GO RED SOX & make some history by winning your first World Series since 1918.
5. Make sure that you also catch the race for the Nextel Cup championship on NBC (Locally: 7, 10, 22, 30) & TNT.
6. On the local stations, I decided to add WCDC-19 (ABC) of North Adams, MA onto the list, because some of you that play are from the Hilltowns and some of you do get WCDC-19 (WTEN-10 programming) and so, WCDC-19 is added.
7. When you go out trick or treating this weekend, please make sure you do safely!
8. Let's give a round of applause and welcome Mike Carr to Beat Mike this week. He will be playing the game starting in Week 8 and will in the PV8GL.
9. The election is on November 2, 2004. Please make sure to go out and vote, because your vote might be the vote to decide who goes to the White House this January.

Good Luck this week and have a Happy Halloween and make sure you vote on 11/2/04.

Thank You,
Mike

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for making their first World Series since 1986. This is also the St. Louis Cardinals first World Series since 1987. Red Sox fans, I said in the Week 6 standings for Beat Mike,  Everyone, please remember these words tonight when watching the Red Sox game: Go Red Sox! If you can believe in yourselfs, you can win. Just believe! You'll be there soon, just believe! And now, I have some words for the World Series for the Red Sox: It's been 86 years since you last won the World Series. You can win the first since 1918 if you believe in yourselves to do so. Don't get angry, and if you play well, you will win. Just believe! You'll win it soon, but take one game at a time. My words helped them win Game 7 vs. the Yankees. Hopefully, my words will help here as well!

You can catch the World Series on:

 WFXT-25
 WTIC-61
 WNAC-64
KTVI-2, St. Louis

Or on your local Fox Station.

Provost, MacDonald, and Bryden Week

Welcome to Week 7. This week is Provost, MacDonald, and Bryden week. These three are known to people of PV8 as "The Three Musketeers," "The Three Amigos," "The Trio," and so on, but these three are best known for being the three who sit at the entrance of the Voluteer/Exhibitor lounge at the Springfield RV Camping & Outdoor Show from 1998-2003 (only one out of the three was alive for the 2004 show). They would sit at the entrance making sure that you had your badge or they wouldn't let you go to the lounge. The trio would also hang out together at campouts and other activities that the camping club have. The three are now in Heaven with their husbands all of them hanging out together. The first of the three that went was Gloria Provost on October 6, 2003. Helen MacDonald followed on January 11, 2004. Then recently, Charlotte Bryden died on October 14, 2004. The picture that displayed is of Charlotte Bryden and Gloria Provost working at the camping show in 2003 (note: both of them are wearing a green patch that I designed for the 2003 show. The 2005 patch will be another patch that I would design). Well, that's enough of that for one e-mail! Here's the games for Week 7:

Patriots vs. Seahawks Game Release

The Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks when they come to Gillette Stadium on Sunday, October 17.

The Patriots enter the most challenging stretch of their 2004 schedule when they play host to the Seattle Seahawks this week in search of their 20th consecutive victory. After compiling a 4-0 record against teams with a combined record of 5-14, the Patriots set out on a four-game stretch during which their opponents are an aggregate 14-4. The Gillette Stadium faithful hope the home team can win its record-tying 17th consecutive regular-season contest in the second game of its three-game homestand against the 3-1 Seahawks, who will face the Patriots for the first time since 1993.

BROADCAST INFORMATION

TELEVISION: This week's game will be broadcast on FOX. The game can be seen in Boston on WFXT-TV Channel 25. Dick Stockton will handle the play-by-play duties, while Troy Aikman and Cris Collinsworth will provide analysis. Pam Oliver will provide reports from the sidelines.

RADIO: WBCN 104.1 FM is the flagship station for the Patriots Rock Radio Network. Play-by-play broadcaster Gil Santos is in his 28th season as the voice of the Patriots and will call the action along with Patriots Hall of Famer Gino Cappelletti. Santos and Cappelletti are celebrating their 21st season as a broadcast tandem.

TOUGH ROAD AHEAD

The Patriots are about to enter the toughest stretch of their 2004 schedule. New England's next four opponents hold a cumulative record of 14-4, while its first four opponents are a combined 5-14. The only team the Patriots have played so far that currently has a winning record is Indianapolis, but the next four teams on tap for New England are all above the .500 mark. New England has won its last 12 games against teams that finished the season with a winning record (or in the case of the 2004 Colts, currently own a winning mark).

Patriots vs. Seahawks Quick Facts
Here's some quick facts about this week's Patriots/Seahawks game

HISTORICAL HITS
  • Seattle is one of just two teams the Patriots have yet to play in the Bill Belichick Era in Foxborough (since 2000). New England also has not played the San Francisco 49ers.
  • The Patriots and Seahawks played 12 times in a 14-year span from 1980-93, but have not played in 11 years.
  • New England and Seattle played six times over a six-year span from 1988-93.
  • The Seahawks are the only non-divisional team that the Patriots have played twice in the regular season in the same year. That scheduling oddity took place during the 1993 season, the only year in which the league's 16-game schedule was played over an 18-week span and each team was allotted two bye weeks.
  • The Seahawks are the only NFL team that the Patriots have not played since Robert Kraft purchased the team in 1994. The last time the two teams squared off, James Busch Orthwein owned the Patriots and the team's future in New England was severely in doubt.
  • Seattle will be the most-traveled team in the NFL during the 2004 regular season, with seven of its eight road games requiring a round trip of at least 2,220 air miles.
  • Including this week's game, seven of the last eight games between the Patriots and Seahawks will have taken place in New England. The Patriots have traveled to Seattle just once since their Super Bowl XX season of 1985 (on Oct. 24, 1993).
CONNECTIONS
  • Patriots tight end Christian Fauria spent seven seasons with the Seahawks before arriving in New England in 2002.
  • Seahawks defensive end Brandon Mitchell spent five seasons with the Patriots before arriving in Seattle in 2002. Mitchell's last game in a Patriots uniform came when he earned the starting assignment at defensive end in Super Bowl XXXVI.
  • Patriots running back Corey Dillon was born in Seattle and played college football for the University of Washington.
  • Corey Dillon played for the Washington Huskies in 1996, during which time Seahawks assistant strength and conditioning coach Bill Gillespie served in the same position at the university. Gillespie was the strength and conditioning assistant from 1991-98 before serving as director of strength and conditioning from 1999-2001.
  • Defensive lineman Ty Warren and wide receiver Bethel Johnson attended Texas A&M where they were teammates of Seattle defensive tackle Rocky Bernard.
  • Linebacker Ted Johnson and tight end Christian Fauria were teammates at Colorado where they also shared some time in the locker room with Seahawks linebacker Chad Brown.
  • Patriots guard Russ Hochstein played college football at Nebraska from 1997-2000 while Seattle kicker Josh Brown kicked for the Cornhuskers from 1998-2002.
  • Patriots rookie wide receiver P. K. Sam and Seahawks rookie safety Michael Boulware were teammates at Florida State from 2001-03.
  • Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is originally from Westwood, Mass., and he attended Boston College where he was the starting quarterback for two years.
  • Seahawks backup quarterback Brock Huard was quarterback for the Washington Huskies in 1996, the one year that Corey Dillon played running back for the Huskies.
  • Linebacker Tully Banta-Cain was a teammate of Seahawks tackle Wayne Hunter at Cal before Hunter transferred to Hawaii.
  • Quarterback Tom Brady and Seahawks guard Steve Hutchinson were both Michigan Wolverines from 1997-99.
  • Seattle defensive end Chike Okeafor went to Purdue where he was a teammate of three Patriots: tackle Matt Light, linebacker Rosevelt Colvin and tackle Brandon Gorin.
  • Patriots punter Josh Miller and Seattle punter Tom Rouen both assumed punting duties for the Steelers in 2002.
  • Patriots linebacker Don Davis and Seattle defensive end Grant Wistrom were teammates with the St. Louis Rams in 2001 and 2002. Both were in the starting lineup for the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI when New England defeated St. Louis, 20-17.
THEN AND NOW
THEN: 3-26 over a 29-game span from 1990-93
NOW: 25-4 over a 29-game span from 2002-04
The last time the Patriots and Seahawks played on Oct. 24, 1993 the franchise from Foxborough resembled its current incarnation in absolutely no respects. At that time, New England was kicking off a seven-game losing streak as part of a run of futility that touched three different seasons (1990-93) and saw the Patriots compile a 3-26 record over a 29-game span. Compare that to the most recent 29 games in the franchise's history, a span over which the Patriots are 25-4 since Week 12 of the 2002 season. New England's 3-26 run spanned from the final week of the 1990 season through an entire 2-14 season in 1992 and through a 1-11 start to the 1993 season. Over that span, the Patriots' most common non-divisional opponent was Seattle, a team that dealt the Patriots three losses in that time frame.

THE LAST TIME
Seahawks 10, Patriots 9
Oct. 24, 1993 - Kingdome - Seattle, Wash.
The last time New England and Seattle met, a touchdown pass from the Seahawks' Rick Mirer to Brian Blades with 25 seconds left in the game erased a 9-3 Patriots lead and gave Seattle a 10-9 win. The loss was the Patriots' 21st defeat in 24 games. Scott Sisson nailed three-of-five field goal attempts to account for New England's scoring on the day.
After a scoreless first quarter, Seattle took a 3-0 lead when John Kasay kicked a 30-yard field goal that capped a seven-play, 49-yard drive. The Patriots, who outgained Seattle by 41 yards in the first half, missed two field goals in the second quarter to remain scoreless at the half.
The Patriots tied the game at three when Sisson kicked a 36-yard field goal that capped an eight-play, 48-yard drive in the third quarter. Sisson kicked a 25-yard field goal early in the final stanza, followed by a 19-yarder with 9:07 remaining, to put the Patriots up, 9-3. The Seahawks rallied with a 14-play, 54-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard pass from rookie quarterback Rick Mirer to receiver Brian Blades with just 25 seconds to play. The touchdown held up, and the Seahawks were victorious by a score of 10-9.

PATRIOTS-SEAHAWKS PLAYER NOTES - 10/24/93
  • Scott Secules started at quarterback for the Patriots in place of injured rookie Drew Bledsoe and completed 15 of 30 passes for 129 yards, throwing no touchdowns and two interceptions.
  • Leonard Russell was the Patriots' leading rusher, gaining 97 yards on 21 carries.
  • Rookie Troy Brown, an eighth-round draft choice, returned three punts for 54 yards and returned a kickoff 15 yards.
  • Seattle quarterback Rick Mirer, chosen second overall behind Bledsoe in the 1993 NFL Draft, completed 22 of 43 passes for 203 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

THIS WEEK IN PATRIOTS HISTORY

OCTOBER 10 - OCTOBER 17
October 11, 1963: The Boston Patriots played their first game in Fenway Park, notching a 20-14 victory over the Raiders.
October 13, 1974: New England blanked the New York Jets 24-0 at Shea Stadium to improve to 5-0 on the season. The five wins to begin the 1974 campaign are the most to start a season in franchise history.
October 13, 1985: Patriots cornerback Raymond Clayborn established a new team record for consecutive starts when he started his 111th straight game. Ray Hamilton had the old mark of 110 starts (set Sept. 16, 1973 to Oct. 26, 1980). Clayborn celebrated the record-setting day by scoring his first professional touchdown on a 27-yard interception return.
October 14, 2001: The Patriots rallied from a 26-16 deficit with less than five minutes to go in the game to post a 29-26 overtime win against San Diego at Foxboro Stadium. The win was the first in a series of 10 wins in 12 games en route to an 11-5 record in the Patriots' first championship season.
CHANGING PLACES
Since the Patriots last played the Seahawks in 1993, much has changed both in the NFL world and in the world in general. Here is a snapshot of a few developments from the last 11 years.

In the NFL...
  • The L.A. Rams moved to St. Louis (1995), the L.A. Raiders moved back to Oakland (1995), the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore (1996) and the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee (1997).
  • The league added four teams, growing from 28 to 32 clubs. Added were Carolina (1995), Jacksonville (1995), the expansion Cleveland Browns (1999) and Houston (2002).
  • NFL active rosters grew from 47 players to 53 players.
In the World...
  • The U.S. participated in six Olympic Games.
  • The U.S. had two presidential elections (1996, 2000) and is about to have a third (Nov. 2).
  • Dolly the sheep, the first animal cloned from adult cells was born (1996).
  • The European Union adopted the Euro as the official currency of 12 countries in Europe (2001).
  • The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was implemented (1994).

REGULAR-SEASON RECORD
New England is one victory shy of the NFL's all-time regular-season record of 17 consecutive victories, set by the 1933-34 Chicago Bears. Last week against Miami, the Patriots tied the post-merger record of 16 consecutive regular-season victories. The Patriots join the 1971-73 Dolphins and the 1983-84 Dolphins as the only post-1970 teams to win as many as 16 consecutive games in the regular season. The only team in NFL history to have won more consecutive regular-season games than the Patriots was the 1933-34 Chicago Bears, coached by the legendary George S. Halas, one of the NFL's founding fathers.

HOME SWEET HOME
The Patriots enter this week's game sporting a 17-3 (.850) all-time record at Gillette Stadium, including regular-season and postseason games. New England has won an NFL-best 13 consecutive regular-season and postseason contests at home, with its last defeat coming in a 30-14 regular-season loss to the New York Jets on Dec. 22, 2002. Last season, the Patriots were undefeated at home for the first time in team history, winning all eight regular-season games and two postseason games in Foxborough. The Patriots' .850 winning percentage at Gillette Stadium is the highest of any NFL team at its current home stadium.

Seahawks at Patriots - Game Preview

Game Notes (pdf)

THIS WEEK

GAME AT A GLANCE
The Seahawks travel to Foxborough this week for the first time since 1993 and take on the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots.
Seattle's 3-1 record equals their record at the quarter mark of 2003. The team went on to start he season 5-1 and finish 10-6 to earn a Wild Card playoff berth.
This game kicks off a stretch in which four of the club’s next five games will be played away from Qwest Field, including division games at Arizona (10/24), San Francisco (11/7) and a rematch with the Rams at St. Louis (11/14).
The Seahawks have started the season 2-0 on the road and to go 3-0 the team will have to end the Patriots’ NFL-record 19-game winning streak, a streak that includes the NFL’s longest current home-game winning streak of 11 regular-season games, 13 including playoffs.
This is the first game for the Seahawks versus an AFC opponent this season. The Seahawks play the AFC East and won’t play another member of that conference until they host Miami on November 21. This is also the first season the Seahawks have played the AFC East since the re-alignment, but posted a 26-27 record against the division prior to 2002. Last season, the Seahawks were 2-2 versus AFC North opponents.
The Seahawks are 7-6 in the all-time series versus the Patriots. Although the Seahawks and Patriots have not matched up since 1993, Seattle has won the last five games played between 1988 and 1993, including four in a row on the road.
The five-game winning streak against New England is tied for the longest current streak versus any opponent, along with a five-game string versus the San Diego Chargers.
The nine-year hiatus between the two teams is the longest of any current opponent. When the club plays the Patriots this weekend the New York Jets will have the longest span between meetings, with the two teams having not played since the 1999 season. However, the Seahawks will play the Jets in New York on December 19.
Mike Holmgren has tangled with the Patriots three times, all as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Holmgren led his 1996 squad to a Super Bowl XXXI victory over the Patriots.

Seahawks Face Super Bowl Champion Patriots Sunday
The Seahawks travel to Foxborough this week for the first time since 1993 and take on the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Game Preview

The Seahawks have started the 2004 season 2-0 on the road, and to go 3-0 the team will have to end the Patriots’ NFL-record 19-game winning streak, a streak that includes the NFL’s longest current home-game winning streak of 11 regular-season games, 13 including playoffs.

This Sunday's game at New England could be viewed as a measuring stick as to whether the Seahawks now belong among the NFL's elite teams. And there's no test like playing the defending Super Bowl Champions to find out.

"Anytime you play a team that has done it, like New England, it's a good measuring stick for your team," says Mike Holmgren. "I would say this, and it makes for good copy and interesting discussions and stuff, but it is a long season. Wait until the end. You've really got to wait to the end, who's in the playoffs and who makes it, because strange stuff happens every Sunday. Upsets. Stuff happens." Player & Coach Interviews

Holmgren led his 1996 Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl XXXI victory over the Patriots.

The Seahawks are 7-6 in the all-time series against the Patriots. Although Seattle and New England have not matched up since 1993, the Seahawks have won the last five games played between 1988 and 1993, including four in a row on the road.

Kickoff is at 10:00 am PT.

This is the first time I've started a letter like this, so you know I feel
pretty strongly about the subject.

As you can see from the article below, the National Football League is not
allowing quarterback Jake Plummer to continue wearing a small #40 on the back of
his helmet in honor of Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who gave up his career
and died serving his country. Because Plummer no longer plays for the Cardinals
(Tillman's team) he isn't being allowed to keep Tillman's number on his uniform.

I believe Tillman made a great sacrifice for his country and any player in the
NFL should be allowed to honor him by wearing his number. I sent an email to
NFL commission Paul Tagliabue to let him know my feelings, but my one email
alone probably won't convince him.

If you feel that Jake Plummer and other players around the league should be
allowed to wear Tillman's number 40 on the back of their helmets this season,
you can do two things: 1) send an email to
commens@n... to tell Mr.
Tagliabue that the NFL should allow any player who wants to honor Pat Tillman to
do so, not just Arizona players, 2) forward this email on to other people who
might be willing to also email the National Football League to convince them to
change this policy. Maybe if enough football fans make ourselves heard, the
league will listen!!

Thanks!

Carrie

Standings Stats Teams Players Injuries Photos Plummer won't
challenge NFL rule on honoring Tillman
September 30, 2004
DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer must remove the No. 40
decal he's worn on the back of his helmet since training camp that honors former
Arizona Cardinals teammate Pat Tillman.
Tillman, the former safety who walked away from the NFL to join the U.S. Army
Rangers and fight in Afghanistan, was killed in action in April.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday the league's long-standing policy
prohibits personal messages on uniforms or helmets. Violators could face fines
of $5,000.
``We do that because we need a consistent rule. You can't just pick and choose
and say one message is OK but another isn't. Where would you draw the line?''
Aiello said.
The league has honored Tillman several times this year, including at the NFL
draft, at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in August, and on the second week
of the season when all NFL players wore Tillman's number on their helmets.
``I want to honor Pat the best I can. I honor Pat every day, every game in my
own private way,'' Plummer said. ``I'm trying to get something done that won't
infringe upon the NFL logo and uniform codes.
``I'm not going to fight the NFL,'' he said. ``I'm looking for some kind of
compromise.''
Plummer and Tillman became close friends after playing together at Arizona State
and later with the Cardinals. Plummer said he has been wearing a small No. 40 on
the back of his helmet since training camp.
The Cardinals will display Tillman's number on their helmets every game this
season, but individual players, such as Plummer, are not allowed to do so.

Beat Mike Week 6

Welcome to week 6. I am sorry if I sent this a day later than normal. I went to Rhode Island for the weekend (I think in a few years, I want to move to either Fall River, New Bedford, Tiverton (RI), North Tiverton (RI), Portsmouth (RI) or out to Ohio), worked yesterday and went out to Worcester today. So, I was unable to send the newsletter on Monday or this morning/afternoon. I will send you the standings tonight (Brian LaValley, you will have an updated score from week 4 since I did found your e-mail from week 4 and the week 5 total will also be on there). For the first time since 1993, New England will play Seattle. In the Beat Mike existence, New England has not played vs. Seattle or San Francisco (NE will play vs. SF on week 17). My games of the week are SEA @ NE and PIT @ DAL. Here's Week 6:

CAR @ PHI (Fox)
CIN @ CLE (CBS)
GB @ DET (Fox)
HOU @ TN (CBS)
KC @ JAX (CBS)
MIA @ BUF (CBS; locally: 3, 12, 67)
SD @ ATL (Fox)
SEA @ NE (Fox; locally: 25, 61, 64)(The first matchup between these two since 1993)
SF @ NYJ (Fox)
WAS @ CHI (Fox)
DEN @ OAK (CBS)
PIT @ DAL (CBS; locally: 3, 4, 12, 67)
MN @ NO (ESPN)
TB @ STL (ABC; locally: 5, 6, 8, 9, 40)
OPEN DATE: AZ, BAL, IND, NYG

DEADLINE: Sunday, October 17 @ 12:55PM (ET).

NOTES:
1. I was suppose to dedicate this week of Beat Mike for Billy Baker, but I have decided to move it to week TBA.
2. NASCAR Nextel Cup will be in Charlotte, NC this week. The race will take place on October 16 at 7PM on NBC (locally: 7, 10, 22, 30).
3. Boston Red Sox are in the ALCS. They will play vs. New York Yankees for the second year in a row in the ALCS. You can catch all the action on Fox (locally: 25, 61, 64). GO RED SOX!
4. I have decided to put the local TV stations that the game(s), race(s) will be aired. The stations on there are Springfield (MA), Hartford, Boston, Manchester (NH), and Providence.
5. The standings from Week 5 will be sent later on tonight. I will post the standings with the week 6 standings on the fantasy sports leagues I belong to.
6. You can catch Patriots' 5th quarter after the SEA @ NE game on UPN 38.

Good Luck this week!

Beat Mike Week 5

Hello everyone! This will not be a dedicated week (we had enough with weeks 1-4, lol!). One year ago this week, the game was almost stopped for week 6. It went on because I felt that it needed to go on. I lost someone back on October 6, 2003 that made me realize that the game had to keep on going. Go on with life as it is given to you. I want to thank you all for giving me support for the past year. Starting this week, you will be put into two leagues: PV8GL and IPPL. Later on in this e-mail, I will let you know which you will be in. Let's play Week 5:

CLE @ PIT
DET @ ATL
MIA @ NE (NE will attempt to break the longest winning streak record)
MN @ HOU
NYG @ DAL
OAK @ IND
TB @ NO
BUF @ NYJ
JAX @ SD
AZ @ SF
CAR @ DEN
STL @ SEA
BAL @ WAS
TN @ GB
OPEN DATE: CHI, CIN, KC, PHI

DEADLINE: Sunday, October 10 @ 12:55PM

NEW LEAGUES: Divisions 1-3 are now the PV8GL. Divisions 4-5 are now the IPPL.

PV8GL: Me, Brian LaValley, Frank Russell, Jay Whelihan, Josh Pratt, Nathan Whelihan, Steve Duquette, Tom Russell, Joe Axenroth, Laura Barshefsky, Ryan Flynn, Mike Kosiorek, and Mike Mason.

IPPL: Brian Foss, Dan Garnell, Steve Smith, coorskids, crzy4hcky, david_stewartca, flintdigit, jesterw1999, jewballaz13, jje1082, jongers_2002, knightangel619, lostsoulkeeper, mrxtravis, slammer121212, tsabal, and ukanddejrfan.

Now, the top 8 from each league will be in the playoffs and the winners of each league will battle it out in Beat Mike Bowl VI (during Superbowl XXXIX). Good luck to you all!

Mike

P.S. You will most likely not receive week 6 until the morning of October 12. Thank You.

If no one else plays Beat Mike (of all of people who wanted to play and never did) by Week 4, then Divisions 1, 2, and 3 will be combined into a division and Divisions 4 & 5 will be combined into a division. The new groups will become two leagues. The PV8/Gateway League (PV8GL) and the Internet/Pro Pick'em League (IPPL).

Thank You,
Mike

P.S. There would be 13 people in PV8GL and 17 in IPPL. I hope that four more people that I know from PV8 or Gateway could jump onto the bandwagon and play, so that we can have 17 people for both leagues!

Beat Mike Week 3
ESPN Week

I hope week 2 was a good week for you. Pat Tillman's number is now retired in Arizona. ESPN gave us Cincinnati's win over Miami, 16-13 last night. For the whole summer, ESPN was celebrating it's 25th anniversary (Sept. 7, 1979). Happy 25th ESPN and keep up the good work to provide us with the best sports coverage around. I would also like to say that this is the 88th consective week of Beat Mike football, regular season (108th consective weeks if you include playoffs). Week 15 will be known as the 100th week and dedicated to the first 100 weeks. Week 3 is now, so let's play!:

1. I know that some of you never received week 2. Well, I do have the newsletters posted each week at www.yahoogroups.com/group/miked31784 and www.yahoogroups.com/group/beatmikenetwork. I do not know what happened that caused you not to receive the newsletter on week 2, but I hope youj can access those sites, if in case you don't receive the newsletter in the future.

2. NFL.com is also the place where you can get the schedule for each week's action. Just in case you don't get the newsletter, you can go on the site and get the schedule. BUT PLEASE, do not e-mail me your picks until 5PM (ET) on Mondays (you don't have to worry about this if you do get the newsletter).

I made a mistake on the newsletter for Week 2. I said "One of the people who didn't play, I was disappointed at. The champion last year, Brian Foss didn't play last week and I was disappointed at him." He did play and I found the e-mail with his picks for Week 1 (sorry Brian Foss). Now, the names that you see on the standings are those who played in Week 1. I didn't include the people who signed up, only those who actually played Week 1, because those who did not play week 1 got zero for the week. Divison 5 is the pick'em league on Yahoo! Josh Pratt & I are in the league, but we are in Division 1 (like we were last year). Also, you will know your final division by week 4, as I still sort out who is playing or not.

Beat Mike Week 2
Pat Tillman Week

Hello and welcome to week 2! Well, the first week of football is done and ready for week 2! Everyone in NFL is honoring Pat Tillman this week and so are we. Pat Tillman was the Arizona Cardinal who gave up his football dreams and go over and fight for our country in the Middle East. Everyone will be wearing a number 40 decal this week on their helmets (Arizona Cardinals will be wearing the decal all year). Interesting enough, the Cardinals host the Patriots this week and the Patriots were the first people in history to get our freedom. That was what Pat Tillman did for our country as he was fighting in the Middle East. He's a hero and he will not be forgotten. Week 2 Schedule:

CAR @ KC
CHI @ GB
DEN @ JAX
HOU @ DET
IND @ TN
PIT @ BAL
SF @ NO
STL @ ATL
WAS @ NYG
SEA @ TB
BUF @ OAK
CLE @ DAL
NE @ AZ (The game where Pat Tillman will be honored)
NYJ @ SD
MIA @ CIN
MN @ PHI

DEADLINE (for everyone): SUNDAY, SEPT. 19 @ 12:55PM (ET).

Notes:
1. I have decided to have the same deadline for everyone (whether doing it by e-mail or Pro Pick'em) because it's confusing for me by doing a seperate deadline for e-mail and one for the Pro Pick'em league, especially when Yahoo! sets up for the one of the Pick'em. Weeks 12, 15, and 16 will have deadlines like week 1 for those of you doing it by e-mail because of the earlier games (11/25, 12/18, 12/24, 12/25). I will explain about those deadlines once we get to those weeks.
2. You people sign up to play this game and I would like you playing the game. Last week, only 20 or so of you played last week. That is low! I'm surprised to see that only a few people in some of the divisons played, while the rest of you did not. One of the people who didn't play, I was disappointed at. The champion last year, Brian Foss didn't play last week and I was disappointed at him. Anyways, if you do not play by week 4 (those of you that didn't played), you will be eliminated from the game.

Good luck to you all!
Mike

P.S. Those of you who wanted to join my pro pick'em league, the ID is 10191, password is bmnseason6.

Beat Mike Week 1
Ronald Reagan Week

Hello everyone! I hope you have enjoyed your 2004 so far. We are kicking off the sixth year with IND @ NE. We are also kicking off the year by dedicating this week to the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Reagan died on June 5, 2004 from his battle of Alzheimer's disease. He was president from 1981-1989. Anyways, it's time to get the first week off and running:

IND @ NE (THURSDAY)
AZ @ STL
BAL @ CLE
CIN @ NYJ
DET @ CHI
JAX @ BUF
OAK @ PIT
SD @ HOU
SEA @ NO
TB @ WAS
TN @ MIA
ATL @ SF
DAL @ MN
NYG @ PHI
KC @ DEN
GB @ CAR (MONDAY)

Deadlines:
  • To include the Thursday game: Thursday, September 9 at 8:45PM (ET)
  • To not include the Thursday game: Sunday, September 12 at 12:45PM (ET)
  • Pro Pick'em League: Thursday, September 9 at 8:55PM (ET)
When you do your picks (by e-mail), please do it in one of the following formats:

IND @ NE*
IND @ NE-NE

Notes:
1. Starting this year, all Pro Pick'em picks will be included in the standings for the main game. They will have their own division in Beat Mike, however. The deadline for the Pro Pick'em will always be five minutes before the first game of the week. The deadline for the people doing it by e-mail will always be fifteen minutes before the first game of the week (Sunday, if you don't include the first game).
2. By week 4, everyone should know which division you'll be in (most of you will stay in the same division as last year).
3. Some of you received an invite from me to play and had the line "P.S. If your children are NFL fans, they are welcome to play also," that was for the PV8 players who's children (eight or older) wanted to play.
4. All picks are e-mailed to me at miked31784@..., unless you are in the pick'em league. If you belong to the MikeD31784, Beat Mike, or Gateway 2003 groups, then you can e-mail me from there.

Good Luck everyone in Week 1.

Mike

Hello everyone. Some of you may know that we dedicate a few weeks of the year in the Main Game for people who have died that impact the sports world, entertainment world (only a few are selected) or anyone I feel that should be dedicated that help out in the game. Some of the people dedicated in the past include Dale Earnhardt (Sr.), George Harrison, Rod Roddy, Gloria Provost (my grandmother), Gerri Richards, and Brian Desmarias, to name a few. I am proud to announce that the following weeks have been dedicated:

2004:
Week 1: Ronald Reagan (40th USA President, died on June 5, 2004)
Week 2: Pat Tillman (played for the Arizona Cardinals, join the miltary and died while fighting in Afghanistan)
Week 6: Billy Baker (died on July 17, 2004 from MDA, went to Gateway with me).
The week of UMass' first men's basketball game: Jack Leaman (long time coach of UMass and radio announcer, died on March 6).

2005:
Week 2: Rusty Wallace (races the #2 Miller Lite Dodge in NASCAR, retiring after the 2005 season)
Week 6: Mark Martin (races the #6 Viagra Ford in NASCAR, rumors are he will be retiring after the 2005 season. If so, then this week will be dedicated to him)

Thank You,
Mike

Hello everybody! I have created a pro pick'em league for NFL. The pro
pick'em will also serve as part of Beat Mike, the Main Game. By joining the
pro pick'em, you would not have to e-mail me your picks each week (until the
playoffs). The standings you get for the pick'em will count towards the
standings for Beat Mike.
