Beat Mike Week 13
Jack Leaman Week
Hello everyone and welcome to Week 13 of Beat Mike. This week is dedicated to the memory of long time UMass Basketball coach and radio personality on WHMP 99.3 (later became WZLX) and WRNX 100.9 for the games, Jack Leaman. Jack Leaman was the coach in the 1970's. A two-time New England Coach of the Year, Leaman coached Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino, Boston College head coach Al Skinner and UMass Athletic Hall of Famers Bill Tindall, Joe DiSarcina and Ray Ellerbrook. Leaman coached 22 All-Yankee Conference selections during his tenure at UMass. Beginning with the 1994-1995 basketball season, Leaman took a role as a color commentator on radio broadcasts of all UMass men's games. Three times during those 10 seasons (1996, 2001 and 2003), Leaman teamed with announcers Bob Behler and Mark Vandermeer to earn Best Play-By-Play honors from the Associated Press. On March 6, 2004, Jack Leaman died in Washington, DC on his way back to Amherst after doing the game at Richmond.

NOTES:
1. Information on Jack Leaman was from http://umassathletics.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030704aaa.html.
2. Staying on topic, I hope you all watch ESPN at some point the past few weeks. I saying this because ESPN has a SportsCenter ad with the UMass Mascot on it. I thought it was funny! I know UMass is not a divison 1 school for football, but it is for basketball, the football team won a national divison 1-A title in 1998 and the men's basketball team was in the NCAA tournament from 1994-1998. Well, as you may know, ESPN main studio is located in Bristol, CT, and UMass is only an hour away from Bristol.
3. Next week, there will be a poll question on who do you think will win the December 9th mens basketball game between UMass and UConn.
4. Either ATL @ TB or MN @ CHI will be seen on Fox 23 WXXA, Fox 25 WFXT, Fox 61 WTIC, and Fox 64 WNAC for the 1PM game. The game was not decided at press time of this newsletter.
5. Congrats to the Philadelphia Eagles on winning the NFC East yesterday over the New York Giants.
6. This is unofficial: Atlanta can clinch the NFC South with a win over Tampa Bay in Week 13.
7. I decided to put in the poll question for the Army vs. Navy game this week because I know that some of you are fans of Army & Navy.
Good Luck everyone this week!
Mike
