Beat Mike Week 1

Beat Mike
Season 9, Week 1

Greetings everyone! Thank you for joining Beat Mike for it’s 9th Season. Wow! Nine seasons all ready. Where have the time gone? Well, next year, it will be a decade. I enjoy serving you each and every NFL season. I hope to continue to serve you until the day I die, but I hope that does not happen for a long time. That would not be good, would it? How was your summer everyone? This year, I have extended the fan base a little. I have expanded into Facebook. Now, I have three areas where people will be playing, by e-mail, by Yahoo! Pick’em, by MySpace and by Facebook. Also, if you are not able to play by any of those formats or not able to go on a computer, you can call the Beat Mike line at (407) 232-2895 and leave a message with your picks. Play is still the same. You pick the teams that you think will win and if they win, you will score a point for each pick. I will explain the format of the playoffs in the latter part of the newsletter. But you do know that:  Regular season: Weeks 1-17. Playoffs: Weeks 18-21. In order to get credit for your picks, you will need to have your picks made (on Yahoo! Pick’em) or sent (by e-mail, MySpace and Facebook) by the deadline set each week or you will not credit for that week.

I forgot to mention that Week 1 is dedicated to Sean Joseph O’Brien. Sean was a great guy and for most of you that didn’t know him, he was a one of a kind. He was 27 years old and was killed on May 5 in a motorcycle accident. I will post the article later in the newsletter. I will also dedicate this week to one of the greatest NAFCA members that there has ever been, Roger Swallow. I will not post his obit on here.

I think it is time to rock and roll and get to the games of Week 1!

NEWS:
1. I know that this event is not until October 28, but I have some news for you. For the past three years, I have walked in the Rays of Hope Breast Cancer Walk at Forest Park in Springfield. For the second year in a row, I have formed my very own team called the BMN Pals (BMN=Beat Mike Network). I invite you to join my team. If you would like to join my team for the walk, please go to the web site http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=228840 and click on the register here button. When you do, for team, select BMN Pals. If you have any problems getting to that link, you can go to google.com or any search engine and type in “Rays for Hope.” You should connect then. Also, if I am able to, I will need to know your shirt size so that I can get you a shirt for the walk. After the walk, we will all go to a local restaurant to have pizza or a luncheon. There are two paths you can walk. The 5 mile (8 KM) or the 2 mile (3.2 KM).
If you are unable to join us for the walk, then you are welcome to sponsor me in the walk at  http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=228840 or you can even sign up and do the virtual walk. No matter where you are from, you can still help us out!!!!

2. Tuesday, September 11, 2007 will mark the 6th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks. Please honor those who have served or are currently in the service. Please make sure that you honor Jeremy Boufford, the Middlefield resident who was killed in Iraq on August 22. He was in the class of 2004 at Gateway. I will post his obit later in this newsletter.

3. For those who are receiving this as a member of a Bills Backer chapter or a Browns Backer chapter, I welcome you. To the presidents of those chapters, if there are any members that want to play my game, please forward this to them and have them e-mail me their picks.

4. This year, Beat Mike is going to be sponsored by Consumer United. You can money on auto insurance and electric rates and soon on cable TV, cell phone, landlines, and so much more! You can go on www.consumerunited.com to sign up! Also, when you get your quote, please make sure you tell them that Mike DiMauro sent you.

5. Here’s the article from WWLP on Sean O’Brien:
Granby Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash
GRANBY, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) A Granby family of avid motorcycle riders is trying to make sense of how their son died in a crash this weekend.
Twenty-seven-year-old Sean O'Brien had been riding motorcycles since he was 16 and his parents say he always put safety first when on his bike. Raymond O'Brien says he has lost his best friend, his son, Sean.
Chicopee police Lt. Richard Nunes says 27-year-old Sean O'Brien died when he rear-ended a car on Memorial Drive early Saturday morning. Nunes says speed and alcohol played a role in the deadly motorcycle crash.
Raymond O'Brien says, "We are on our way to the funeral home right now. I got up the other night and I heard something. I thought he was coming in because it hasn't really hit me that he isn't with us anymore."
Raymond told 22News Sean always wore the proper gear and never cut costs when purchasing things like a helmet.
Just two days after Sean O'Brien died on Memorial Drive in Chicopee, another accident with a motorcycle happened just yards from where O'Brien died.
Witnesses say the car in front of the motorcycle stopped short Monday afternoon. That's when the bike hit the bumper and the rider went flying, frighteningly similar to Saturday's fatal crash.

6. Here’s the obit on Jeremy Boufford:
