Plan Calls for Eliminating all Tolls West of Rt. 128
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS (AP) - The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority plans to vote Wednesday on a proposal to eliminate all tolls on the highway west of Route 128. The plan is being offered by a panel that was created by Governor Romney to look into turnpike finances. The panel believes the loss of revenue from the tolls would be offset by the firing of most of the state's 400 toll collectors, and by savings from the shift of administrative and maintenance responsibilities to the state highway department. Tolls between Exit 1 on the New York border and Exit 6 in Springfield were eliminated for passenger cars in 1996. The plan being voted on by the board would eliminate all tolls west of the Route 128 interchange in Weston. The Romney administration said the change would not require legislative approval and would take effect June 30.
