I recently received a photo of Harmon Killebrew's grave site from Nita Killebrew
and Everett Cope. The photo is now on my website and may be seen at
http://www.thebbnlive.com/PlayerInfoByKeyID.aspx?KeyID=killeha01. It's a
handsome monument for a great player and a great person.

My website, http://www.thebbnlive.com, now has about 1200 grave site photos of
deceased baseball players, including those contributed by Rex Hamann, Paul
Lynch, Steven McPherson, Stew Thornley and Dr Fred Worth, plus those taken by
myself. That represents about 15% of the known player grave sites, with more to
come in the future. Short obituary abstracts of all deceased major league
players may be seen at http://www.thebbnlive.com. An index to those players
with grave site photos may be found at
http://www.baseballundertaker.com/gravesites.html.

Enjoy, and watch for more, coming soon.

Ray Narleski always reminds me of how errors in baseball (and other
fields) get compounded and get a life of their own.

When Tug McGraw in 1979 allowed a fourth grandslam home run, the Chicago
Tribune mentioned that he had tied Ray Narleski's record. However, a typo
was in the column and it stated that Narleski did this in 1949, although
it was in 1959 (with the Tigers). (of note, Narleski debuted in 1954).
Typos happen all the time. So what?

Later that day, legendary Chicago announcer Jack Brickhouse worked the
McGraw/Narleski story into his on air comments during the Cub's game. He
said something like "Tug McGraw tied Ray Narleski's record of four set in
1949. I remember that Ray was then pitching for Lou Boudreau and the
Cleveland Indians..."

Thus if anyone had read the Tribune about Narleski and then heard
Brickhouse, there would be no doubt that that this happened in 1949 with
Cleveland, and never would have thought of 1959 with Detroit.

I knew Dr. Deal.  I knew he was a baseball fan (he had a baseball bat cane) but did not know he had played professionally.  He was a top notch mathematician.  A member of the Mathematical Association of America for something like 72 years, whenever he attended a talk at our annual regional conferences, he would be able to ask good, insightful questions regardless of the topic.  Great man.  Great mathematician.
