Something is incorrect or missing here.

"Phillips began his career at his hometown newspaper, the Manteca
Bulletin, in 1959 after graduating from college and playing minor league
baseball. He served as news editor and then managing editor before leaving
the newspaper to become sports editor at the Modesto Bee in 1965."

Baseball-reference shows that he played minor league ball in 1968, 1969,
and 1971. He was born in 1935. It is hard to believe that he began as a
35 year old rookie, especially since the obituary events focus on 1959.
Could there be a second Darell Phillips? Could he have played earlier?

Thanks for discovering his death.

On another vein, Baseball Reference has a few places where they have a guy managing a ball club at 18 or 19. I have even seen a few guys managing at AA or AAA level at 22-23. I cannot prove it wrong, I just find it highly unlikely.

Actually, I'm inclined to believe that it is accurate, given the unique spelling of his first and last name, the age match and the connection to Modesto. SSDI is no help here for some unknown reason, although I GenealogyBank does yield a document showing that he served in the Marine Corps in 1961 (1).  For him to pitch a single game in each of three seasons in his thirties while also being on record as a sports editor is not altogether unreasonable, not now, and especially not in Northern California in the late 1960s. I've not looked at all the clips, but there was one other item in NewsBank that reported his drowning in a story about deaths as a result of El Nino. (2)

Lewis Bishop died on Dec. 27, 2011 in Auburn, MA.  He was an outfielder who appeared on the Chicago Cubs' 1961 spring roster (based upon .330, 23 HR in 1960 at Class D Carlsbad). In the photo on the above webpage, he appears in a Gardner, MA High School uniform.

The 1970 Minor League Digest lists Phillips with “Modesto (no cont)”  -- I assume that means no contract.  It gives his first pro season as 54 but does not list a year of birth.  If his first pro contract was signed in 1954 then he very well could have been pitching for Modesto in his 30s.

I have sporadically found errors in Baseball Reference. However, this is
not a very common occurrence, especially percentage-wise. At the National
SABR meeting in 1982, I ran into Richard Cohen of Cohen, Deutsch, Johnson
and Neft. I was surprised that he remembered me: I had previously mailed
him some corrections in their Baseball Encyclopedia. He thanked me again
and told me that there was over 7 million data pieces in their book, and
thus he expected there were more.

Thus, I am not surprised that Baseball Reference has some errors, but in
the entire scope of the amount of information it has, the amount of
mistakes is very small.

On another vein, Baseball Reference has a few places where they have a guy
managing a ball club at 18 or 19. I have even seen a few guys managing at
AA or AAA level at 22-23. I cannot prove it wrong, I just find it highly
unlikely.
