Covington played 5 years with the Braves 56-60, then in 61 played with 4 teams - the Braves, KC, White Sox and Phillies - and then played 62-65 with Philly.  Anybody have any insight as to why he was with 4 clubs in 1961?  It seems he had a pretty successful career after baseball.  I just finished reading Howard Bryant's biography of Henry Aaron and Covington provided a lot of good information on Aaron's minor league days and his early Milwaukee years.

Buddin fielded criticism
By Dan Shaughnessy
Globe Columnist / July 7, 2011

Former Red Sox shortstop Don Buddin died a week ago and nobody here noticed. He was buried in South Carolina Sunday, but there was nothing in the Boston newspapers until yesterday. Folks at Fenway didn’t get the word of Buddin’s passing until his son-in-law called them Tuesday.

Of course, you heard it here six days ago, thanks to the diligence of Jack Morris. I do think it's a good thing for Red Sox Nation to be reminded of their ignominious past, so I applaud Shaughnessy for his column, though I don't think that is what Buddin's son intended when he called the ballclub.

Hall of Fame baseball manager Dick Williams dies   (The Associated Press)
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Updated: Jul. 7, 2011 | 12:28 p.m.

Dick Williams, the fiercely competitive, sharp-tongued Hall of Fame manager who led the Oakland Athletics to World Series titles in 1972 and 1973, died today at his Las Vegas home from what was believed to be a brain aneurysm. He was 82.

Williams, who retired to Las Vegas in 1991, is the only manager in major-league history to win pennants with three different teams -- the Boston Red Sox, Athletics and San Diego Padres. He had a 21-year major league managing record of 1,571-1,421 (.520).

Williams was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 following his election by the Veterans Committee.

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com | 07/08/11 1:00 AM ET

ARLINGTON -- An unidentified adult male died from injuries sustained when he fell approximately 20 feet from section 5 in the left field lower reserved seats to the area behind the out-of-town scoreboard at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Thursday night.

The tragedy occurred in the second inning of the Rangers' 6-0 victory over the Athletics.

"As an organization, our team members and our staff, we are very heavy hearted about this," Rangers president Nolan Ryan said in addressing the media after the game. "Our thoughts and our prayers go out to the family. Our thoughts are with them."

The fan fell head first in the second inning while leaning over the front-row railing trying to catch a ball that had been tossed into the stands by left fielder Josh Hamilton. Athletics outfielder Conor Jackson had hit a foul ball that caromed out to Hamilton in left.

As most Major League players do, Hamilton flipped the potential souvenir into the stands. The fan reached over the railing, caught the ball and then fell head first into the opening behind the scoreboard.

I listened with great interest to the interview which was actually less than an
hour. What struck me was the lack of any mention about him being included under
the "bonus baby" rule in effect at that time. TSN identified the bonus as
ranging from $10,000 to 25, 000 and the reason the Dodgers had to keep him after
his arm went bad and eventually had to send him to the Phillies so he could be
sent to the minor leaguers. Now I guess we will never know.

I am not sure exactly what the bonus rule was at that time. However, a
player with large bonus could be farmed out: Robin Roberts is an
example. It was only in about 1952 that bonus players had to be with the
major league team for 2 years (after Dick Groat).

TSN 1/5/1949 page 17 gives a clear explanation of the bonus rule as it was at
that time and states that a player cannot be assigned at any time without
waivers which is how he was assigned by the Phillies.

I also listened to the entire interview looking for insight into his original signing, hoping to corroborate a submission to the Scouts Committee by longtime scout John Keenan, the nephew of Dodgers scout Bert Wells of Larned, KS.  Sexauer did not mention him by name, instead stating that he had been courted by Branch Rickey, Branch Rickey, Jr. and most likely signed by George Sisler in St. Louis upon his return from a tryout. I suspect that Wells was tipped years earlier by another returning veteran and perhaps scouted him at a National Baseball Congress tournament game or while he pitched for Wake Forest, but have no evidence to support that.

Thanks to Walter for his continued interest in player transactions and military service.
