The SABR Scouts Committee has documented him as a scout for the 1960-61 Tigers and 1963-64 Reds, per The Sporting News Guide.  We credit Horton to Lou D'Annunzio and Northrup to Ed Katalinas, but the timing fits so I'm seeking further corroboration.  It's not uncommon to credit multiple scouts for a given player and I'm sure that Horton and Northrup were well known prospects to folks in the Tigers organization.

James Otis Trew, Sr., died April 27, 2011, in West Bloomfield, MI, after a long illness. Born in West Frankfort, IL, on Feb. 23, 1922, he was 89 years old. He is survived by his wonderful wife of 37 years, Dorothy Trew; beloved son James Otis Trew, Jr. of Chicago; and grateful daughter, the Hon. Mary (Lisa) Trew, a judge in Cook County Circuit Court, IL. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary Ann, nee Ward, Trew in 1970; and eldest daughter Martha Ann Trew in 2005. His parents were Mildred London and Carl Trew. He is also survived by his two wonderful stepdaughters, Nancy (Tom) Curley and Patricia Malone. Jim and Dottie were the proud grandparents of four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They had many friends, including the late famed broadcaster of the Detroit Tigers, Ernie Harwell, who, until his own recent death, visited Jim many times during his illness. Jim was a professional baseball player and player/manager who originally signed with the Chicago White Sox, briefly playing on their major league team early in his career. He then played and managed teams for the Chicago Cubs organization from 1946 to 1954. Later, he became a scout for such major league teams as the Cincinnati Reds and, of course, the Detroit Tigers. Two of the players he signed, Jim Northrup and Willie Horton, were members of the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers. As a young man Jim received football and academic scholarships to attend Michigan State University as an undergraduate, then obtained his Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. He was an airman in the Army Air Corps, later rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. He taught English literature, History, coached baseball and football in the Detroit Public Schools for 20 years, winning numerous championships along the way. He completed his academic career as Director of Admissions for Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. Visitation will be Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m. at O'Brien Sullivan Funeral Home, 41555 Grand River Avenue in Novi, MI. Funeral services and burial will be Monday, May 2, 2011 in Freeport, MI, near Grand Rapids. The entire Trew family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise Senior Living of West Bloomfield, particularly in Reminiscense, and Hospice of Michigan for their excellent care of Jim.

The recent death of Dr. Sowada touches me deeply.

Because of his experience pitching for the American Association's Minneapolis Millers,
I requested an interview with him some years ago, an opportunity he willingly granted me.
He had become quite religious in his life, and even wrote a book in 1993 entitled, "Freedom Through Faith,
Memoirs of a Minnesota Doctor."

In the copy of the book he presented to me as a gift, he wrote an inscription which gave me an indication
of how he cherished his memories as a ballplayer and how glad he was that someone was still interested
enough to know about them.

Ernie Sowada was a minor league baseball player but to me he was one of the greats.

From the obit: "He (Bobby Thoompson, aka 'Bull') was a graduate of Harding High School. He was the first black baseball player to go to the major league from Charlotte. He was a professional baseball player with the Texas Rangers."

Thompson was drafted by Texas in the 19th round of the 1972 first-year player draft and is one of the players for whom I've not identified a signing or recommending scout.  I show Neal Gordon "Tex" Millard as a longtime scout for the Reds, Senators and in that, his final season, with the Rangers.  Millard resided in Mooresville, NC which is 30 miles north of Charlotte.  (b. 3/7/1908 VT; d. 3/6/1990 Mooresville, NC, SSN xxxxx9839)  http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=millar001nei

Can anyone confirm if Millard was, indeed, Thompson's signing scout?

I really need to wake up more...Pillette led the AL, not the majors, in losses in 1951 (and was tied at that)...and of course I also meant to add the words "major leaguer" after the modifier "second-generation."

It's still relatively early in California, but that's no excuse! Must finish that first cup of coffee before posting...

Per Bill Carle: "The 1930 census, Public Records Index, and WWII draft registration all say 1922.

All of our databases list: Born July 24, 1922, Detroit, Michigan.  Thus, age 88 at his passing is correct.  When a newspaper or family obit appears, please pass along the link here.
