Is it any surprise that this former Cleveland Indian farmhand who abandoned his tribe for Red Sox Nation would have passed away this week??

http://www.turrentinejacksonmorrow.com/detail.php?id=5781
After his service in the Coast Guard, he played baseball in the West Texas and Longhorn Leagues of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues and signed as a catcher with the farm club of the Cleveland Indians in Midland, Texas around 1950.

The most unusual thing I remember about Eddie Joost was his change in
power starting in 1947 when he returned to the majors. From 1936 through
1945, he hit a mere total of 13 home runs. The best yearly number was 6.
Then he hit 13 in 1947, and followed with 16, 23, 18, 19, and 20 in the
following seasons. In addition, this a period when few shortstops hit home
runs.

In 1947, Eddie Joost started wearing his glasses *on* the baseball
field as well as off the field. Joost was a notoriously, poor contact
hitter until that time.

As a little girl Eddie Joost managed my beloved San Francisco Seals for part of the 1956 season until he was replaced by Joe Gordon. He was very nice to me and got a kick out of my calling him "Mr. Joost."  In between games of a Sunday doubleheader he came over to our family box and gave me an autographed team ball. I kept it in a place of honor for years.

Thank you for your email.

It speaks highly of a person when he/she does something nice for someone
without expecting anything in return. Anyone can be nice to you when they
feel that you can do something important to them. You anecdote is very
telling about Eddie Joost's (Mr. Joost's) character.

Conrado Marrero is currently the oldest living former major league.  He turns 100 on April 25.  There have been two excellent features written on him in the past few weeks, by our friends Tom Hawthorn and Peter Bjarkman.

I think you misread my question, Rod...Joost was the oldest living former manager. And I believe he was not only the oldest living former WS player, but also the man still living who played in the WS the longest ago (1940). I think those honors are now held by Monte Irvin and Stan Musial, respectively, but I'd like someone smarter than me to confirm that.

The leading the league in batting for the first half of the 1957 season is
slightly misleading. "In 1957, Bertoia led the American League in hitting
for the first half of the season. His .398 average was even higher than
the vaunted Ted Williams."

That was on May 16th and he had only played 26 games. Williams surpassed
him on May 18th. He did finish with his season's best .275.

I acknowledge the use of Retrosheet for this.

Six Italian-born men played major league baseball, all in the years
1932-62. The only one still alive is, apparently, Rugger Ardizoia,
who pitched a couple of innings for the 1947 Yankees.

Similarly, all 41 Irish-born major leaguers have now presumably died.
Presumably from now on, most European-born players will be from the
likes of military families, rather than immigrants in the traditional
sense.

NIGUA, Dominican Republic (AP) — An 18-year-old Washington Nationals prospect has died in the Dominican Republic from bacterial meningitis.

The team said in a statement Friday that shortstop Yewry Guillen died Thursday. It is unclear whether Guillen was in contact with other players at the team's academy.

The team declined a request for comment Saturday.

Local team representative Moises de la Mota did not return calls for comment.

Guillen was signed in February.

Based upon this kid's name, I would presume that he is indeed an Italian immigrant.  Born in San Remo, Italy, Alex Liddi is a 6'4" 230lb  power-hitting corner infielder in the Mariners organization and is currently playing at AAA Tacoma.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=liddi-001ale

If and when the 22 year-old Liddi makes the majors, he will become just the 8th Italian born player in MLB history and the first since 1963 (Reno Bertoia).

Six Italian-born men played major league baseball, all in the years

Similarly, all 41 Irish-born major leaguers have now presumably died.
Presumably from now on, most European-born players will be from the
likes of military families, rather than immigrants in the traditional
sense.

The Department of Veterans Affairs defines a World War 2 veteran as some on in
the service between 12/71942 and 12/31/1946. So John Webb would be a WW2
veteran.
