Just returned from a motor trip through
eastern Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and
over the Mackinac Bridge and finally back home
to east-central Minnesota, having left June 19.

During the trip my wife and I were able to locate
the graves of the following players (in order), each of whom had
major league experience but also played in the American
Association.

1. Vive Lindaman at Charles City, Iowa
2. William Joseph Wagner at Waterloo, Iowa
3. Art Reinhart at Ackley, Iowa
4. Hal Trosky at Norway, Iowa
5. Al Van Camp at Davenport, Iowa
6. Al Epperly at Davenport, Iowa
7. George Stovall, Burlington, Iowa
8. Michael Edward "Eddie" (or Mike) Heydon
at Indianapolis, Indiana

The most interesting finding was Heydon's grave
stone which identifies him at Marion Heydon. Holy
Cross cemetery verifies this is the correct Mike Heydon;
born 1874, died in 1913. Additionally, I have not
yet determined the exact location of his birthplace which
is listed in all customary sources as (only) Missouri. Heydon
was highly thought of as a catcher and was quite popular
with Indianapolis fans during his seasons with the American
Association's Indians (1902-04).

All photos will be downloaded to my DeviantArt.com website
and I will post here after I have done so.

1. He was born in Kankakee, Illinois. That is the city south of Chicago
that Ruth Ann Steinhagen was hospitalized in 1949.

2. He played in class D ball and AAA in the same season (1952), and then
was back a D ball the next year (1953). This seems very odd.

Hi all you baseball fans,

Last year I put a corrected, expanded and up-to-date version of my published
book, The Baseball Necrology, on the internet. Since then there has been some
confusion on how to select a player's necrology on the site. So, yesterday I put
a brief description of the required procedure on the site. It is:

Enter a players Last Name, First Name, then select the name you want from the
Drop-Down List and click the Submit Button. Usually it will only be necessary to
enter the first few characters of the last name, but for common names like Smith
or Jones you may need to enter more. The Player's Debut Date is shown so you can
choose between two or more players with the same name.

I hope this clears up the problem, and those who couldn't find who they were
looking for the first time will try again. Good luck, and all of you have a
great day!

I think this one slipped past us as the death notice did not appear on legacy.com.  BB-REF is showing DOD as 6/16/2010 as in JUNE 16 while the May/June SABR Biographical Committee Newsletter lists 1/16/2010 as in JAN 16, citing the Kenosha News.  Odd that an AP story was widely circulated in mid-June and they seemed to have written it up poorly, with no specific date of death, only that his passing was due to an post-operative infection.  Apparently the surgery that actually took place last year.

BOB HARTMAN | 1937-2010

June 22, 2010

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The family of former Major League pitcher Bob Hartman says he has died of an infection following a cancer operation last year. He was 72.

Audrey Hartman says her husband died Wednesday in Kenosha. She says he was having trouble speaking at the end but that he managed to find the strength to tell her he loved her.

Bob Hartman had brief stints with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 and the Cleveland Indians in 1962. The left-hander appeared in 11 games, going 0-1 with a 5.21 ERA.

After his playing days, Mr. Hartman served for more than 20 years as a sports director for a Kenosha youth baseball league. In the early 1970s he was the Clerk of Kenosha County Circuit Courts for six years.

Mr. Hartman is survived by his wife, three daughters and six grandchildren.

R. C. "Red" Gaskill of LaMarque, Texas passed away on July 10, 2010, after a short illness. Born in Hannibal, Missouri on April 23, 1921, he was 89 at the time of his passing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret "Maggie" Barnes Gaskill. Red is survived by his two daughters Ann Gaskill of LaMarque and Kay Jaeger, his son-in-law Stephen Jaeger and two grandchildren Patrick Jaeger and Carrie Jaeger of Pflugerville, Texas and his beloved dog, Buster

Red was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in LaMarque. A WWII vet he survived his ship being torpedoed at the battle of Leyte Gulf and remained active politically until his death. After retiring from Union Carbide, he pursued his great passion for the game of baseball, from his time as a semi-pro player, summer league coach and 35 years as a scout for 4 major league teams--Mets, Expos, Indians and the Angels. He was named national scout of the year in 2002 and was inducted into the Texas Baseball Scouting Hall of Fame the same year

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the James Crowder Funeral Home in LaMarque. A graveside service will be at 10:00 am Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson, with Father Chacko Puthumayil officiating

The family suggests that memorials be made to Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1224 Cedar Dr., LaMarque, Texas 77568 or the charity of your choice.

Thanks Jack for sharing that email.  I have in my notes that Red Gaskill was named Midwest Scout of the Year in 1999, not 2002.  The Scouts Committee of SABR has recorded that he first scouted part-time for the expansion Montreal Expos from 1969-1973 and went full-time with the Indians from 1974-1987 and 1988-1999 with the Angels. We credit him for signing Albert Belle, Dave Clark, John Farrell, Kelly Gruber, John Moronko and Greg Swindell for the Indians, but perhaps his greatest find came while he was still with Union Carbide and birddogging for the Mets. It was Red Gaskill that tipped Red Murff about a skinny right-handed pitcher out of Alvin, Texas named Nolan Ryan.

Contact info for funeral home is here:

If that doesn't work, I would think that Larry Schenk w/Phillies would be helpful in this regard.
