"Charles played for the Brooklyn Dodgers Farm Team and was scheduled to
move up to the Brooklyn Dodgers but he decided to focus on his family
instead."

This does seem a bit of a stretch, especially considering the
documentation of his minor league career.

The news about Robertson is very sad. Here is a list of recent MLB
players who have died, in order of their last season:

2009 Nick Adenhart
2007 Josh Hancock
2007 Joe Kennedy
2006 Geremi Gonzalez
2006 Cory Lidle
2004 Rod Beck
2004 Brian Powell
2004 Jeriome Robertson
2003 Dernell Stenson

It's strange that the most recent eight should be pitchers.

Please pardon the cross-posting.

According to Retrosheet, George "Chief" Johnson is buried in the Agency Cemetery in Winnebago, NE.  http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/J/Pjohnc102.htm

According to folks I've talked to, that cemetery is now called Winnebago Cemetery.  On a web site, I found a photo of a grave for George JOHNSON

Winnebago Cemetery, Thurston County, Nebraska, 1832 to 1-10-1926.  Do any of you have any idea if this could be the ballplayer's father or grandfather?  The same site shows markers for the following:

JOHNSON, Agnes Marie                1900-1988

JOHNSON, Alvina R.        1920-1987

JOHNSON, Benjamin I.  1916-1994

JOHNSON, Henry F.        1934-1972

JOHNSON, John                1848-1891

JOHNSON, Joseph           1872-1909

JOHNSON, Little Boy       ????-????

JOHNSON, Lydia J.           1927-1990

JOHNSON, Marcus Gabriel           1998-2003

JOHNSON, Mrs. Joe        1833-1917

JOHNSON, Phillip Thomas            1938-1978

JOHNSON, William           1840-19??

JOHNSON BEAR, Louise 1887-1921

Anyone know if any of those names could be family of the ballplayer?

Following Jack's excellent reccomendation to read about Lefty Brewer who made
the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day, I'd like to suggest you read the following
Baseball in wartime blog feature on Lefty. It is a far more detailed account of
his life and sacrifice than you will find on the Baseball in Wartime website.

Ironically, he played minor league baseball with Elmer Gedeon in 1939
(Orlando Class D) and 1940 (Charlotte Class B). Elmer Gedeon as most of
us know, was a major leaguer who was killed in WWII.

Following Gary Bedingfield's excellent blog post on Memorial which also ran on Seamheads.com, I created an Excel spreadsheet for all those who had been killed in action in the service of their country, adding those from other wars (Span-Am, WW1, Korea, Vietnam) that had been researched by Frank Russo (thedeadballera.com).  The reason for this is that I recognized that much of this biographical research is not yet reflected in the SABRpedia, hence not shown on their player records on Baseball-Reference.com. I'm aware that Ron Henry has posted data on BR-Bullpen that has tags a similar list of players and includes former Japanese ballplayers as well, but I've not cross-referenced that info as yet, nor the biodata for the numerous "less thans", semi-pro and amateurs that has been documented.

Since I'm occupied with an ongoing Scouts Committee project, I'm looking for a volunteer that can take the info from the spreadsheet and update SABRpedia.org accordingly. Jack Morris, who already does such yeoman work in this area, is excused from volunteering for this dangerous mission.  :)

Former Sickles, Saint Leo baseball star Buriff dies in crash

http://suncoastpasco.tbo.com/content/2010/may/26/pa-former-star-ballplayer-dies-
in-crash/

FROM: The Sun Coast News ~
By Lisa A. Davis

LAND O' LAKES

Just two days after his 24th birthday and hours after
a family celebratory dinner at home, 24-year-old
Shane George Buriff died in a motorcycle crash.

Buriff , a Lutz resident and former standout
student-athlete in the Tampa Bay area, lost control
of the motorcycle he was driving south on Mentmore Lane
near Manassas Drive, went off the road and was thrown
off the bike, hitting a guardrail before landing in
a ditch, a Florida Highway Patrol report stated.

Buriff was pronounced dead at the scene by Pasco
County Fire Rescue paramedics.

He was not wearing a helmet, the highway patrol said.

Buriff, who advanced to playing minor-league baseball,
had played baseball in the Northside Little League
in Tampa, at Sickles High School, for Polk Community
College and at Saint Leo University.

"He was drafted out of high school by the Milwaukee
Brewers organization but chose to go to college instead,"
his father, Brent, said Monday.

Buriff was a star left-handed pitcher for Saint Leo,
where, as a senior in 2008, he had a record of 3-0 for
the Lions. He signed a free-agent contract with the
Chicago White Sox and played for the Bristol (Tenn.)
White Sox before being released after a little more than
a year with the team.

"Every little kid dreams about being a major-league
baseball player, and only a handful get a chance," his
father said.

Recently, Buriff was a dispatcher for Florida Rock & Tank
Lines, a bulk tank carrier of petroleum and other liquid
and dry bulk commodities

"He wanted to be a high school baseball coach," Brent
Buriff said.

In addition to his father, Buriff leaves his mother, Deborah;
a brother, Jeff; and two sisters, Tricia and Michelle.
