Former Garfield coach Bob Tate dies

FROM: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer ~
http://snurl.com/jykkm

Bob Tate, 83, the former Garfield basketball coach who
led the Bulldogs to two state titles in six seasons, has
died.

A cause of death is unknown, although Tate had a history
of heart trouble. Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus
announced Tate's death during Wednesday's game. Tate
was a member of the Mariners RBI Club, a group of
season-ticket holders.

Tate was a baseball and basketball star at the University
of Washington and played professional baseball for
a season in the California League. He went on to coach
basketball at Garfield for six seasons and serve as an
administrator and teacher at several area schools.

He was beloved for staying in touch with all of his former
players.

Original Colt .45 Woodeshick passes: Reliever was with the club in '65 when it
became the Astros

MLB.com
06/15/09

In the past several years, the Astros family has lost quite a few stars from
past generations, and sadly, on Sunday, it lost one of its founding fathers.
Left-hander Hal Woodeshick, a member of the original Colt .45s, passed away at
the age of 76 after a lengthy illness.

Woodeshick not only was a member of Houston's very first Major League team, he
was also with the club when it became the Astros and moved into the Astrodome in
1965. He pitched 3 1/2 years with Houston as part of an 11-year Major League
career, during which he compiled a 44-62 record and a 3.56 ERA over 427 games
(62 starts).

Woodeshick, considered Houston's first real closer, made one All-Star appearance
in 1963, his second season with the Colt .45s. He was 11-9 with a 1.97 ERA over
55 relief appearances that year, and he logged 10 saves.

The next season, Woodeshick recorded a career-high 23 saves while compiling a
2.76 ERA. He was traded to the Cardinals in the middle of the 1965 season and
made his only World Series appearance in 1967 with St. Louis, pitching one
inning in relief against the Red Sox.

Woodeshick made his Major League debut with the Tigers on Sept. 14, 1956. He
pitched for Detroit, Cleveland, Washington, Houston and St. Louis before
retiring following the '67 season.

By graduating from Lane Tech in 1936, Frank Dasso must have overlapped
with Phil Cavarretta for 2 years there. Actually, Cavarretta also was a
pitcher there, besides being a first baseman.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=theoba001ray

Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - June 16, 2009

An 83-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a sport utility vehicle in
Metairie on Sunday night, authorities said.

Raymond Theobald was pronounced dead after he was taken to East Jefferson
General Hospital in Metairie, according to Sgt. Larry Dyess, spokesman for the
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. The driver, an unidentified 80-year-old woman
from New Orleans, was not cited. But the district attorney's office will be
consulted, according to Dyess.

The accident occurred just after 8 p.m. at West Esplanade Avenue and Oaklawn
Drive. The woman told investigators she had been traveling east on West
Esplanade and saw no one in the crosswalk as she approached Oaklawn.

"She didn't actually see where he was," Dyess said. "Just that she heard a noise
and looked back and saw him lying on the ground and stopped to render
assistance."

Theobald lived just a half-mile from the accident scene and was most likely
walking home from Lakeshore Playground, according to his son, Dean Theobald, 49.

The younger Theobald said his father struggled with dementia and the effects of
a stroke eight months ago. Although less mobile than he used to be, Dean
Theobald said his dad was pretty stubborn and insisted on living at home and
walking or riding his bicycle around the neighborhood.

"For his age, he did pretty good," Dean Theobald said. "He lived his life and
did the things he enjoyed doing."

Theobald was originally from New Orleans, where he grew up, but he spent some
time in Georgia, where he played minor league baseball for the Atlanta Crackers,
his son said. Theobald moved to Metairie around 1965 with his wife Edna and
their children. He worked for the United Fruit Co. in New Orleans before moving
on to the U.S. Selective Service agency, Dean Theobald said.

Dusty Rhodes, hero for Giants of 1954 World Series vs. Indians, dies

BY Bill Madden
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Thursday, June 18th 2009, 4:00 AM

Dusty Rhodes, the incorrigible New York Giants free spirit who became the
improbable hero of the 1954 World Series, died Wednesday in Las Vegas after a
variety of illnesses, including diabetes and emphysema. He was 82.

The Alabama-born Rhodes, who came up to the Giants in 1952 with a reputation of
being a hard-hitting, hard-drinking and defensively challenged left fielder,
achieved baseball immortality in the '54 Series when he went 4-for-6 with two
homers and seven RBI in the Giants' four-game sweep of the heavily favored,
111-win Cleveland Indians. Rhodes, whose lefthanded stroke was tailor-made for
the short right field porch at the old Polo Grounds, won the first game with a
pinch-hit, 10th-inning three-run homer off future Hall of Famer Bob Lemon just
inside the right field foul pole, about 296 feet away. The next day, he
delivered a pinch single in the fifth and a home run in the seventh against
another future Hall of Famer, Early Wynn, to highlight a 3-1 Giants win.
Finally, in Game 3, he hit a two-run pinch single off the Indians' Mike Garcia
to spark a 6-2 Giants win.

For all three pinch-hitting opportunities in the Series, Giants manager Leo
Durocher elected to have Rhodes bat for Negro League legend Monte Irvin, who
went on to become a Hall of Famer himself.

"It's a sad day for me," Irvin said last night via phone from Houston. "Dusty
and I were such good friends. Even though he was born in Alabama, he was like a
brother to all the black players. Dusty was color-blind. He sure did like the
good life, though, which would drive Leo crazy. I remember one time we were in
Japan playing an exhibition series and Leo and I were standing in the hotel
lobby late one night when Dusty came through the door. Leo said: 'Are you coming
or are you going?'"

Rhodes, who wound up playing only seven seasons - all with the Giants - in the
big leagues before retiring in 1959 with a career .253 average and 54 homers in
576 games, freely admitted his fondness for the drink and the nightlife. In an
interview at his home in Las Vegas with the Daily News last December, he joked:
"I couldn't buy a drink in New York after that '54 Series. It's funny, I was
never sick a day in my life until I quit drinking."

In his autobiography, "Nice Guys Finish Last," Durocher described Rhodes as "the
worst fielder who ever played in a big league game who made training rules
forgotten" but added: "Dusty was the kind of buffoon who kept a club confident
and happy. And boy could he hit! Between him and Willie Mays, there was nothing
but laughter in our clubhouse."

"He was a fabulous hitter and a great friend," Mays said last night from San
Francisco. "He stayed at my house and I've never had a greater friend."
