Hi Jack - Welcome aboard.

This discussion forum is used primarily to communicate recent passings in baseball as they are uncovered and shared by the baseball researchers that are subscribed to this email list server. We track players, managers, umpires, coaches, scouts, executives, broadcasters, writers and others of general interest to professional baseball, majors and minors included.

In general, links to the online obituaries are supplied along with a link to a page displaying the player's record in the SABR Minor League database which is now hosted by Baseball-Reference.com.  The forum was created as an offshoot of the Minor League Database Project in order to capture relevant information in the news.

In general, what amounts to new biographical research for players that passed in earlier years is not posted to the list, but we encourage subscribers with information to send to SABRmilb@... to help fill in the gaps that exist in our biographical data.  (Full Names, DOB, POB, DOD, POD, Cemetery location, Ht/Wt; Bats/Throws).  Subscribers here who have access to reliable reference material or online genealogical research tools are asked to volunteer time to our ongoing work.

You can view the group's message archives back to December 2007 when the list was first formed by clicking on this link and scrolling through hundreds of emails OR you can SEARCH the archives for specific names, cities or other specific info that may appear in the emails.

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/BaseballNecrology/

NOTE: each and every email has a link to VISIT THE GROUP ON THE WEB at the bottom of the page.

Unfortunately, many of the links to online obits may no longer be valid, but a full text archive is maintained by several people on the list, so that those obituaries/death notices are available upon request.

Additionally, the Minor League Necrology data presented here is gleaned and presented in tabular format The Emerald Guide to Baseball, while the Major League subjects are given a brief baseball epitaph that describes his career in baseball.  The publication is our attempt to present the definitive record for annual batting, pitching and fielding for organized baseball, to fill the void created when The Sporting News ceased publication of the Annual Baseball Guide after the 2006 edition.

2007, 2008 and 2009 issues of The Emerald Guide have been published electronically in PDF format and are also available in hardcopy (see below).

PGA golfer Bob Rosburg died at 82.

Bob Rosburg Dies At 82
The 1959 PGA champion was one of the game's first on-course TV reporters

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) -- Bob Rosburg, who won the 1959 PGA Championship and spent three decades with ABC Sports as the first reporter to call the shots from the golf course, has died. He was 82.

<snip>

On playing a match as a 12-year-old with Ty Cobb: 'I was an 8-, 9- or 10-handicap, something like that. I played Cobb in the final of our flight. I really had a pretty good day, and he didn't play too well; I beat him, 7 and 6. All his buddies started razzing him so bad and you know he was a pretty hot-tempered guy -- that he never came back to Olympic Club (San Francisco) again. All the club members and his friends, they were saying stuff to him like, 'How can a great athlete like you let a kid like this annihilate you? Not only beat you but embarrass you?' He dropped his membership, went down to Menlo Park and played the rest of his days down there. Never came back."

Thanks to Ken Matinale of the Westchester Baseball Group for this post.

Obviously not a former player, but another one of the colorful sidebars that
were a part of baseball. The fact that the team had a moment of silence for a
vendor speaks volumes. Perhaps an Astro fan can give better recollections:

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston Astros games at Minute Maid Park may never be the same
after peanut vendor Arnie Murphy, known as the 'Peanut Dude,' died Tuesday. He
was 61.

Murphy was also known as 'Arnie the Peanut Dude.' You may have heard his cries
or seen him tossing bags of peanuts at Minute Maid Park, and years earlier at
the Astrodome. He was a legend among vendors, appearing in All-Star games and
even in the pages of People magazine.

According to a statement from his employer, Aramark, Murphy "passed away in his
chair while recovering from a stem cell transplant needed to help his failing
heart."

The Astros and their fans honored Murphy with a moment of silence before the
national anthem of Wednesday night's game versus the Brewers.

I am new to the group so I don't know if discussions are appropriate or not - but this is interesting - 23-7, 256 IP  in his only season of organized ball.  I presume he went into the service as the obituary indicates he was a veteran, and never came back to organized ball.

I found that very interesting, too. Granted that the caliber of players
of his league was not impressive (the only name I recognize is Don
Rudolph). However, he is another player with a good record who did not
advance.

Corrections or confusions -

George F. Baker is not in the cemetery records at Old St Marcus

Ernest P. Hickman is not in St Peter's records

Tom Oran is probably in Calvary but his location is "known only to God" after transfer from Holy Trinity Cemetery

There were several where dates of birth or death were off by a year or so but with the number of graves I was visiting, I didn't mess with that this time.

Thanks Fred for contributing these details.

So, am I correct to understand that you kept no notes on discrepant dates of birth/death??  Do you have photos?

Maybe we can find someone to volunteer to collaborate w/you in posting this data to Find-a-Grave.com..   Is that something you would be interested in?

Most of the graves I visited are already on findagrave.com.  Connie Nisinger has worked with Frank Russo to already have nearly all of these on findagrave, with pictures.  There were a couple of errors (Quincy Trouppe, Fred Woerden and one or two more) in Connie's pictures and I've talked to her about that.  I'll be sending the correct pictures to her and she'll be posting them.

Bill Carle informed me that George Baker's real name was Boecke - he IS in Old St Marcus under that name - block 6, lot 1532.  That cemetery is actually now a city park.  At some point in the early 1970s it had fallen into neglect.  They took up the markers, leaving only the large obelisk kind of markers in place.  About 100 markers were fashioned into memorial walls.  With new sidewalks installed and most markers gone, there is no easy way to tell where anyone is anymore.

Corrections or confusions -

George F. Baker is not in the cemetery records at Old St Marcus

Ernest P. Hickman is not in St Peter's records

Full name Ernest P. Hickman
Born 1856, East St. Louis, Illinois
Died November 19, 1891, East St. Louis, Illinois

Per Baseball Necrology: "He worked in his father's office as a commission man at the National Stock Yards. Took his own life by shooting himself after shooting his wife. She died three days later."

Isn't it possible that he's there in an unmarked grave?  Bill Lee surely got that info from someplace, probably a newspaper obit.  (Or maybe they just dumped him in the river..)

Tom Oran is probably in Calvary but his location is "known only to God" after transfer from Holy Trinity Cemetery

From Peter Morris' Bio

<< That off-season the National Association was replaced by the National League, effectively ending Oran's professional playing career. Little more than a decade later he was dead, passing away in St. Louis on September 22, 1886. By then, a couple of other Native Americans, Joe Visner and Jim Toy, were playing professionally and the death of this pioneer warranted only a two-sentence obituary in the Sporting News. (Sporting News, October 4, 1886, p. 5) And by the late 1890s, when Louis Sockalexis became the first Native American ballplayer to receive significant media coverage, Oran had been entirely forgotten.

As a result, we know almost nothing about his personal life. The 1870 census records Oran working as a St. Louis fireman and living with his eighteen-year-old wife Kate and their infant son Thomas. It also indicated that he was born in California around 1846 (which means that he is also the first native of the Golden State to play major league baseball). But thereafter almost nothing is known about his life, including what became of his wife and son.

By working backward, researcher Richard Malatzky did find a likely possibility on the 1860 census. That year's census shows a "Thomas Indian," age 13, living in Petaluma, California, with George Indian, Buck Indian and the family of Abram Cramer. While this is not necessarily the man who later became known as Thomas Oran, it is the only plausible candidate who has been identified.

After his death, Oran's name was mentioned from time to time in the Sporting News. An 1890 piece mentioned that, "Oran was a half-breed Indian and died from the effects of fire water." (Sporting News, March 22, 1890) The following year, after an article that erroneously called him "Thomas Morgan" and said that he was known as "Lusher Tom" or "Indian Tom," Sporting News publisher A. H. Spink pointed out the mistake. (Sporting News, September 19, 1891)

As these descriptions suggest, Tommy Oran's ethnic heritage made him the subject of stereotyping. So far as we know, he was not subjected to more overt forms of discrimination. But, as with so much about the life of this pioneer, that is a subject about which we do not know nearly enough.  >>

There were several where dates of birth or death were off by a year or so but with the number of graves I was visiting, I didn't mess with that this time.
