This was a big controversy during the late 1800s and early 1900s - "professional
boxing" or prize-fighting was attacting a lot of bad press, and a number of
promoters tried to counter that by developing "scientific boxing", or "the
gentemanly art of self-defence".
Also interesting that we see the same pattern of eclecticism in many European
countries at about the same time - B-W in England, Vigny, Dubois et al in
France, Toepoel in Holland ...
