Because your email client (or browser . . . do you use Excite as
webmail, or do you download it to a client?) is interpreting HTML mail
as text (which is why you get HTML <tags>).
If you get it all the time, it's probably your mail reader, and
hopefully you can upgrade it (Thunderbird is a fine client). If it's
sporadic, or just from one site, then something between you and them is
probably mangling the email (ie, stripping the header, and taking the
HTML header with it.) We used to see similar problems with mail routed
through dissimilar systems (especially 7-bit systems, which mangled
anything that wasn't strict ASCII . . . which is part of why html and
stuff look the way they do) which would probably only be relevant if
your mail is getting routed through a really old system, or a VAX, or
something.
