Re: [BaronOwners] Digest Number 162

Just mounted a tufo tubular clincher to my 700c rear  wheel.  I have a 20"(406)  front wheel.  Does anyone know if they (tufo) make  a tubular clincher for the front wheel?  Thanks.  Doug

I've got a triple on my Baron, with a 30/44/58 chainring setup, on a 118mm BB. It shifts as well as you could expect such a wide range to shift. Not exactly 'crisp' but at least predictable and reliable. At first I had a little trouble because the 105 derailleur hit the boom when trying to shift down into granny. This only affected the small ring, and was only because of the large diameter tubing used on the Baron. I cured it by putting a 1-2mm washer (year, a large-diameter one!) under the BB on the drive side. That effectively spaced the bb to the right slightly. A double wouldn't have had this problem. Dana's solution, a longer BB, would work but sounds like overkill. You only need an extra 2 mm at most beyond the standard recommendation, whatever BB you're using.

Regarding overall shifting, I had originally equipped mine with LX-level STI shifters - and they were horrible. I was lucky to get 3 properly working gears at the cassette, and although adjustments would change which 3 gears I could have, nothing I or several bike shops could do would give me any more reliable gears. Sometimes I would have to shift 3 gears before anything happened, and then I never knew which gear I'd end up in. Shifting the chainring usually took several attempts to get enough lever throw to do the job. I replaced them with SRAM Attack grip-shifters, and have had no further problems.

Don, I'm a little confused - is there a tufo tubular clincher that will fit on the front wheel of a 406 wheel. Thanks. Doug ... <jacobsdoug2000@y...> ... ...

Doug, As far as I know there isn`t one, but you can always change the front wheel and use a tubular rim with a regular tubular tire. The small sized Tufo...
