Re: Idler problem and question

Greg,

I am using Terracycle's power side & return Idlers on my Baron.
I originally purchased the power side idler by itself because the
return idler kit was not available at the time.
I needed to keep the chain tube & use a fixed (not floating) setup to
clear the double century bags that I have strapped under the seat.
I was able to use the original chain keeper with the chain tube
attached, but had to use spacers to align the chain tube with the new
idler sprocket.
Any misalignment created a lot of noise.

Later when I purchased the return idler kit, I had numerous problems
with the installation & was in touch with Terracycle several times.
The return idlers must float to avoid the chain running against the
sides of the idlers which creates a lot of noise.
My Baron is a 2003 & required an adapter that moves the upper idler
forward.
The lower return idler requires that you either cutoff the original
chain keeper or reverse the mount so that the original chain keeper is
facing away from the idler.
For my installation the seat bolt that is shared with the lower idler
mount had to be replaced with one with a narrower head as it
interfered with the idler when it floated in toward the frame.
My lower idler mount was slightly bent & this caused a misalignment
that would not allow the chain to clear the side of the idler in the
lower gears on the cassette.
The forward movement of the upper return idler changed the chain line
so that it interfered with the back of the front tire when turning left.
I rotated the lower idler mount forward about 45° to correct this.
Some of these fixes I figured out & some were from Pat & Robert of
Terracycle.
By all means talk with these people about any problems that you're
having with their products.
They were very quick to respond to my problems & were able to supply a
couple of the non standard parts that I needed to complete the
installation at no additional charge.

Remember to check your chain length when you are finished.
Since the Terracycle idlers are larger than the originals, you may
need to add a couple of links to your chain.

Robert

Hi Everyone, I recently purchased a new Baron from BentUp Cycles. I wanted to run the stock chain configuration but I did replace the stock idlers with a full...

Your suspicions are very plausible. On the Seiran SL, there was a certain light chain tension that would allow the chain to be bumped down off the idler and on...

Stephen, Do you have a Baron X-low or a regular Baron? I have a regular Baron with a full set of Terracycle idlers (both Power and Return sides) and...

I'm fairly new to recumbents, I have had my used Baron for about a month now. Where are the "O" rings on the Optima idlers? I'm wondering if it was worn out...

The O-ring would be between the chain and the idler groove. If there's no O-ring there, the chain probably ate through the rubber and the chain rolls against...

Ok, thanks. So a single O ring on each idler. Can they be replaced with generic O rings from the hardware store? Craig To: BaronOwners@yahoogroups.com From:...

I would check to see if the o rings are compatible with your chain lubricant or they may swell up like Paul said. I'm not sure that they stay on for long...
