I recently dropped my return chain, using a Don Smith-fabricated guide which utilizes a 2-inch chain tube mounted under the main power idler. The reduction in pedaling friction is noticeable when turning the pedals backward by hand, but I did not notice much if any difference in speed. In return, I gave up a huge amount of low-speed maneuverability. Like, I now need a football field to make a U-turn! For normal riding (i.e. non-racing,) I may return to the OEM 3-idler system.

John you did not notice anything else?  Don't you have more torque when pedaling?  I thought that was the whole idea.  Don give me some insight also. I don't think I have rode enough to really say what I think yet.  I feel that is helps up hills or it is imagined.

John/Than, If there is any speed to be gained by dropping the chain, it will probably not be noticeable. The purpose of dropping the chain is to make the...
