I would say a guesstimate of mileage would be fine, Daniel. You might
also want to try to "Map My Run". It's a free service that helps
determine how far you've run:
http://www.mapmyrun.com/
Regarding your shorter strides ... YES, YES, YES ... that is the key to
running properly barefoot. Shorter strides will keep you from
overextending and either putting too much pressure on the toe box (too
much pushing off) or hitting your heel when landing (which will cause
knee problems. Quicker cadence, shorter strides is the key to
successful BF running. And, imho, you can go just as fast with shorter
strides as with longer ones.
Good luck Daniel.

Your 10 miler sounds better than my 10 miler today, Ryan. Seems like
every year I am really tired the day after daylight savings time
kicking in. I was just tired today, plus the temps were around 70 and
the wind was blowing ferociously from the south at about 35 mph. This
time of year, I really appreciate the cooler temps, so when we have
an Indian Summer day, it kind of throws me. Finally, I got into my
run the last 4 miles (the wind was at my back then).
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a you had a great run!

Today I decided to challenge myself, after several painful,
disappointing runs last week. I was determined to have a successful
run. I chose to follow my tried and proven running route so I wouldn't
have any surprises. It was a crisp Fall day, lots of leaves on the
ground, temperature about 52 degrees, sun shining brightly.
I ran 10.3 miles today, really trying to keep my form true and
correct. It paid off. I had a very nice run, felt like I was "in the
groove" the whole way. I concentrated on pulling my feet up a little
higher than usual, just to make sure I was not pushing off in any way.
I also concentrated on placing them straight down beneath me. I felt
like I was really working my thighs, in a good way, by keeping my legs
bent in an "S" curve, strengthening them and my hamstrings.
I successfully negotiated some "corrugated" cement sidewalks. I ran
into several sections of ouchies in several places where little
acorn-like seeds were scattered on the sidewalk. I just tried to step
through them as carefully as I could -- mostly successful! My feet did
not scream at me like they did last week. The best part is that I
returned completely fired up and energized. A picture perfect day and
a most satisfying run!
Call me happy.
Ryan
Paul - I have never had PF but from what I hear it can be most
painful. However, I also know barefoot runners who have had PF before
they started BF running, not to experience it again after a gradual
transition into BF running.
I can only speculate that BF running would "stretch" the muscles in
the arch rather than merely cushioning them with an arch support.
Cushioning, from what I have experienced with shoes, has generally
been a bad experience. It desensitizes any feedback to that
particular area of my foot. Now, if I am doing a mid-foot plant and
then gently rolling back to my heel, then I can only surmize that I
am stretching and exercising my arch. This, imho, can only be a good
thing if it is done in moderation as a slow muscle and tendon-
building exercise.
I am not a doctor, my any means. I just know what has worked for me
and others. Take what makes sense and apply it, cautiously, to your
own circumstances and see if it works for you!
Blessed Barefoot Regards,

Great spirtual metaphor there, Doug, about believing is seeing rather
than seeing is believing. Though you could not "see" with your eyes
as well as you could have, you relaxed and just accepted the path for
what it might offer. I have done that many times, both in the dark,
and when I am running marathons. I get so busy being engaged with the
crowds or talking to others that I don't have time to watch as
closely where I am going, but usually only with minor consequences.
Thanks for sharing!

This week I ran 29.75 miles total, of which 24.6 miles were run barefoot.
On Saturday, I did something new. The track that I normally run on was
locked up, so I ran 4 miles barefoot before sunrise on aggregate asphalt
streets. I have never run barefoot in the dark before with only the stars
and a few streetlights to light my way. I ran with my Saturday running
partner who knows the path we took on Saturday. Surprisingly, at least to
me, was the fact that I only encountered 6 loose rocks (more like pebbles)
during my run, none of which caused any painful discomfort. I felt so good
after my run that I drove home and ran my normal 5 mile course barefoot.
Have a great week.

We just returned to 'normal' from DST, for my body it feels quite late already, but in fact it's still rather early. I like that. :-) Anyway, my weekly BF mileage is 10.42 this week.
Got to thinking about all those weeks behind us and how that data is
just sitting out there ... so ... I threw together an html table that
will be easy to insert everybody's totals each week.
(Ryan, I have already put yours in for this week.)
