The following was taken from the RW Training Extra email that I
receive. This is a truism, whether a barefooter or a shoddie:
"When you practice running with a lighter, quicker turnover, you become
a faster, more efficient runner. An increased cadence also decreases
your risk of injury, because your feet spend less time pounding the
pavement. Try counting the number of times your right (or left) foot
hits the ground during a 30-second period. Jog for a minute or two and
repeat the 30-second drill eight times, trying to increase your count
by one or two footstrikes each time."
(Not crazy about the word "jog" but you get the idea.)
BR
Ya know, Ryan, after Cowtown I think I would adjust real well living
up there in the PNW with all you Nor'westerners. Jon and your tales
of all the rain must make barefoot running a lot of fun when the vast
majority of shoddies would have frowns on their faces.
Thanks for reading! It was a blast!

It always amazes me the marked difference of current weather conditions
in the U.S. just a few hundred miles away. It is even more noticeable
to me when I fly. When I left Kansas City Friday morning the skies were
clear. Arriving in Dallas/Ft. Worth an hour and a half later the skies
were threatening and rallying for what would be a huge soaker for the
north Texas area. ...

It's all of 12 degrees right now at 3 p.m. cst here in Lee's Summit
Missouri. I opted for 3 miles on the treadmill today since I already
had 45 miles for the week. Warmer temps are coming next week.

here in the midwest today! Tuesday I ran in tank top and shorts. Today,
the temps were in the mid-20s with wind chills in the single digits. I
wore tights and a spandex long-sleeve shirt which was a little chilly
the first mile, but then I got comfortable even heading into the stiff,
north wind. The sidewalks are seeming a bit less cluttered with salt
and road gravel from the lack of snow plows the last few weeks. It
became a relaxing 9 min. pace run once I got into it. Ended up doing
about 8.5 miles today.
This week, I have ran over 5000 miles since I started running barefoot
on 10/21/03 (actually 5041 miles this week).
And, the way I did was stacking a bunch of weeks together, one after
the other. This week, 51 miles:

Still having a blast while I'm bean counting!

A most excellent week of running all types of surfaces ... concrete,

Next Saturday, the infamous Psycho WyCo Trail Run is happening at
Wyandotte County Lake in rural Kansas City, KS. I thought it might be
a good idea to go out and do a little running on the trails to see if I
was up to the challenge. Ben Holmes, race director has left my
registration open to either run the 10 mile, 20 mile, or the
traditional 50K distance. Thought I would check it out to see if I was
going to be even up to 10 miles, let alone over 30!

So, how was your January?
Did you eat WAY too much (like I did) over the holidays? I am fighting
to lose a few extra pounds put on in December. It is always tough
having a birthday and Christmas so close together.
I had a few goals and a couple I didn't make:
1. Run every day in January
Goal Met - Somedays, I ran twice.
2. Run over 200 miles in January
Goal Met - Actually ran 236 barefoot miles for the month of January.
3. Run the Topeka to Auburn Half Marathon
This is a difficult course with 3 miles of gravel roads.
Didn't meet this goal - It snowed the night before and I didn't think I
was amply prepared since my left middle toe is still healing from
December's frostbite.
4. Beat my last year's 10K time at the Groundhog Run
Didn't meet this goal - Came in 9 seconds slower this year with a 44:57.
All in all, a good month! Looking forward to February!
BR
Anyone who runs outside during the winter months in the Midwest can
appreciate when Hunt-Midwest Subtropolis opens their "doors" to runners
every year. The 24th annual Groundhog Run is a a great respite from the
usually cold temps blanketing the country's midsection this time of
year. This year, however, the temps outside have many days in the past
few weeks matched those of the constant 50 degree temp of the caves.

Anyone seen it? I rented it a couple of weeks ago and watched it.
I saw Ralph as a archetypical messiah-character that was determined
to "daily bear the cross" of hard work and discipline to try to win the
Boston Marathon.
As a student of the scriptures and of various Christian dogma, I found
it interesting that Ralph's quest for a miracle to cure his mom through
his passion and dedication to training, smacked of Catholic doctrine
and the teaching of pennance and works in order to purify oneself.
Ralph felt that if only he trained hard enough and good enough, than
God would grant his mother a miracle of healing.
The end of the movie is interesting in this regard. I will disclose the
ending, but I thought it was interesting that Ralph did not receive
what he was seeking for so fervently, but at the same time found
exactly what he needed.
This was another good mileage week for me at 54 miles. Since I turned
50 years old last month, I have not run a race. My first race as a 50
year old is coming up next weekend, the Groundhog Run 10K. There are
some really fast guys there, so I'm not expecting great things. I was
just hoping that by trying to get back on track with some good mileage
weeks after the holidays (plus a bit faster pace per mile) that I would
be able to hold my own against some of Kansas City's best 10K runners.
We shall see!

Happy running, ya'll!

What an up and down weeks regarding the weather! Today, it was 61
degrees on my run. Earlier in the week, I was running in snow showers!
54 miles for the week!

How about you? How was your week?
BR
Know this Jerry that whatever you decide to report will be
appreciated. I know that some folks cannot or will not post weekly,
but to move toward the type of reporting will only help others on
this board and others.
Good luck with your marathon training and keep us posted!

Rick,
I wholeheartedly support your idea -- and I'm not going to do it this
year. I am training for my first marathon -- indeed, my first race --
and finally concluded that I couldn't successfully manage a full
transition to barefoot at the same time as cranking my mileage up to
50 - 70 mpw plus intervals and tempo work. After I've got at least
one marathon under my belt, I'm planning to re-visit the subject.
Meanwhile, some of my weekly runs will continue to be barefoot ...

As we start a new year of barefoot running, I would like to challenge
those on this board to post and discuss their weekly mileage.
I believe once we commit to sharing our weekly barefoot mileage it
helps make us accountable to one another. Accountability allows one
the benefit of not being haphazard about one's running. When we know
that we are all laying our "cards" on the table then it allows us to
become more disciplined.
It's not about who is running more miles than someone else. This is
about doing the best one can do week from week and telling the story
on the "Weekly Reader". I hope others will not be reluctant to post
no matter what their mileage. We are all here to encourage and
support one another to become better barefoot runner!
This week was like getting back into the swing of things after the
holidays. I took it easy for a few weeks after the Dallas Marathon.
This week ... 46 miles:

"Have Yourself A Merry Barefoot Christmas"
Have yourself a merry barefoot Christmas
And your foot strike light
From now on our injuries will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry barefoot Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
From now on our sneakers will be far away
Once again as in primal days
Happy golden days of yore
Barefoot friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years, barefoot we'll be running
If the fates allow
Hang a RBF ornament from the highest bough
And have yourself a merry barefoot Christmas now
Once again as in primal days
Happy golden days of yore
Barefoot friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Merry Christmas ya'll!

Believe me, you didn't miss out on anything as a recovering alcoholic
except for maybe needing grace more than the regular guy.
Thanks for the comments. Have fun in Boston in '07!

daughter -- I seem to have missed all the fun!) the day you got
sober is like your other birthday! So congratulations on your
birthday birthday and also on nearly fourteen years sober!!!
