Friends,
I hope you can join our K2 team for a fun evening of great stories and
footage from this summer’s expedition. Below is a quick blurb - hope you can
make it and will pass it along to your friends. Chris and Bruce will blow you
away. All my best, Joel

Shared Summits Historic K2 Expedition – Join team for live presentation at
Hopkins
Led by Chris Warner of Earth Treks – 1st Marylander/9th American to summit
Everest and K2 .

On July 20th 2007, the world followed the dispatches sent from base camp all
night as the Shared Summits team of Chris Warner, Bruce Normand and Don Bowie
united with other international climbing teams on the most successful summit day
in K2 history. The trip to the top of world's second highest mountain (and the
hardest one to summit) was featured last month on a one hour NBC Sports special
- but that was only half the story. They still had to make it down safely and
true to it's " Savage Mountain " reputation, the ensuing events and oncoming
storms turned the one day descent into a perilous three.

On February 9th, Chris, Bruce, and base camp manager Joel Shalowitz, will be
at Johns Hopkins to give their first hand account of this remarkable tale. The
Event will benefit Climb For Hope which directs it's funds towards breast cancer
vaccine research conducted by Dr. Leisha Emens at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel
Cancer Center .

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Carrboro Classic Selected to Host USAT Duathlon Regional Championships!
DURHAM,N.C.–JANUARY 29, 2007–USA Triathlon just announced that Carrboro, NC,
home of the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival, will host the 2008
Mid-Atlantic region’s Long Course Duathlon Championships.
Scheduled for April 6th 2008, the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival,
produced by Endurance Magazine, will bring hundreds of high-caliber
runner-cyclist athletes together to compete for the regional championship
title. Athletes will travel from West Virginia , New Jersey , Delaware ,
Maryland , Virginia , the District of Columbia , and across North Carolina .
“There was intense competition in many categories,” stated Bob Wendling,
Vice-president, USAT-Mid-Atlantic Board of Directors, “and the Carrboro Classic
met all of the requirements we look for in selecting a top-notch Championship
venue. We look forward to Endurance Magazine holding another stellar event for
our USAT members.”
From McDougle Middle School in Carrboro, competitors will launch into an 8K
(5-mile) run through scenic rural Carrboro, a 53K (32-mile) bike on the hilly
roads of Orange County, and the final 8K run to the finish line. Four special
award ceremony plaques will be presented to the overall male, overall female,

propels you onward to the last and most exhilarating part of the race–crossing
the finish line. We are honored that USAT has recognized this race and

Hello Baltimore Running Friends,

Last Friday I accepted a position with One-7 Inc., a brand management company
located up in Woburn MA. The company is just getting off the ground with its
first forray into diversifying its portfolio with athletic lifestyle brands.

Ok, so I'll cut to the chase and talk later. I couldn't leave here without
having one last night out in the Big B to celerate all the runners and other
people I've met working in the running community here in Baltimore.

I'll save the stories for another time...Please accept this as an invitation to
come on out to the Owl Bar on Thursday March 6th located inside the Belevedere
Hotel anytime after 6:30pm. One last B-more happy hour before I head on up to
Beantown...

With Warmest Thoughts,

If you did not get in on time and think you may possibly get in as an

(ED NOTE: The first time this was shown, the theatre sold out. Hunt Valley
opened a second screen without notifying that there were still tickets
available, and so there were two partially filled auditoriums. I don't know
what the ticket situation is this time around, but Kim has extra, see below)

I have purchased several advanced tickets for the Spirit of the Marathon movie
this Thursday, 2/21 @ 7:30 for the Hunt Valley theatre in support of a
fund-raising activity.

I have many more than I need and am selling the extras at the cost of the
tickets - $10 (same price as the box office). Please contact me at 443-929-2933
or kpbuhrman@... for tickets. I can meet you before the show.

I am also very excited about seeing this movie!

The RRCA Maryland Club Challenge Ten Miler is this Sunday morning. Be
sure to check the website at www.striders.net before heading down in
the event that inclement weather cancels the event. It should be OK,
but last year we were caught in a situation where the weather trapped
everyone south of Columbia, and the race was canceled due to ice on
the course, but lots of people from Baltimore and north made the trip.

Check the website first thing Sunday morning before heading out.

Subject: Slainte's St Patrick's Pub Run
jamesguyadams
Send Email Send Email

Brief Description: A Saint Patrick's Day Fun Run through downtown
Baltimore that visits six Irish pubs in the process, finishing with a
Guinness Party at Slainte's in Fells Point.

Prices: Pub Run: $10.00 (no active surcharge)
Online Reg. Closes March 13, 2008 08:59 PM Pacific Time

Parking:
-There is two-hour parking on the residential streets of Fells Point.
Those spots are usually hard to find on a weekend. However, the
metered parking on Thames and Caroline Streets does not start until
10:00 AM, so you can park there up until 10:00 AM. If you plan on
spending more time in the area, you can get up to four hours of extra
time by paying the meter at 10:00 AM.

Awards and Random Prizes:
-First and second male and female to return after running to each pub
will receive a gift certificate to one of the participating
restaurants. There will be random gift certificates, one per every
fifteen runners, redeemable at participating Irish pubs.

Irish Olympiad Jackets and Flag Shirts:
-Special Random Prizes will include 10 (ten) Irish Olympiad Track
Jackets made by Brooks and 10 (ten) Irish Flag technical running
shirts. Shirts and jackets are in both male and female sizes.

The Course:
-This is a different type of an event. We will assemble and start at
the Falls Road Running Store at 1622 Thames Street in Fells Point.
Runners are to procede to the six Irish pubs on the itinerary in any
order that they desire. It is probably a good idea to study a map
beforehand to figure out where you might be headed! The shortest
course for all six restaurants is about 5 3/4 miles, but the logical
roads will take you around 6 1/2.

The Strategic Thinker:
-So some strategy is in the works here...do you want to go to the
closest pub first, and maybe stand in line and lose time to get your
bib number validated, or head out to the furtherst pub at top speed,
and hope that the lines are thinned out as you work your way back to
the finish?

Irish Pubs on the Route:
-Slainte's - Thames Street James Joyce - President Street Tir Na Nog -
Pratt Street Pavilion Mick O'Shea's - North Charles Street close to
the Washington Monument Maggie Moore's - Eutaw Street & Fayette
Patrick's of Pratt Street - West Pratt and Schroeder-cross MLK Bld and
go west to the B&O Museum and look across the street.

Safety Considerations:
-Since this is a "Fun Run", there are no police street closures. All
participants are responsible for their own safety. In particular, that
includes obeying all traffic signals, choosing courses that keep you
off the roads, and yielding to oncoming traffic.

Question - Do I have to run the whole route?:
-No, you just won't be eligible to win a top-two finishers award. You
will be able to win random prizes however, and you can still redeem
your coupons at the participating restaurants later on.

Question - are coupons redeemable on St Pat's Day?:
-No, except for the pint of Guinness at Slainte. The Irish bars are
slammed on St Patrick's Day, and will not be able to honor the coupons
then. However, they will honor the coupons for a month after the run
from March 18th to April 22. Make a point to visit on a less hectic time!

Web Site located at...: www.baltimorerunning.com

Other Falls Road Events on Active.com:
Watch for opening registration for the HonRun in conjunction with
HonFest in early to mid-June, the Dreaded Druid Hills 10K tentatively
set for June 28, 2008, and the Celtic Solstice Five-Miler set for
December 20, 2008, with a magnificent premium.

Event Description:
Every registered runner will receive a custom bib number with tear off
coupons redeemable for food or drink at the participating Irish pubs
after Saint Patrick's Day. Those include Slainte, Mick O'Shea's,
Maggie Moore's, Patrick's of Pratt Street, and Tir Na Nog.

Just a little amateur video experiment. 30 seconds of empty road, the start,
then various runners up to the point where the batteries died.

Club Ten Mile Challenge Recap by Ryan McGrath

Thanks to all who showed up for the good of the team, especially Kipchirchir. I
know you really didn't want to race, but I think it was good for you to get out
there and stretch it out. Nothing catapults you into shape like racing, so
thanks for doing it. I owe you one.

Of course, as you know by now, we lost a close one in the Ladies' race, scoring
39 to Howard County's 33. That included great performances by Denise, Kristen,
Melissa (1:08:42!), Alana, "The Princess" Anastasia, Claire, Jen, Becca, Diane,
Eve and Emily. Diane - awesome job in what I believe is your longest race, and
Eve and Emily - great job working together for huge PRs!

The men's race, unfortunately, was not even close. We would have needed Kyle,
Dave and Spider to be come out, and banner days from everyone else, to have even
made it close. They scored 95 to our 345. They had 15 in before our 5, and 17
under an hour. I will say, I'm super proud of Kip for taking out Kent by 1
second and, despite finishing 2nd, Kip finished 1st for team scoring. Steve
Levin, the birthday boy, held it DOWN, running a stellar 57:33. We had a guest
appearance from Mike Marsteller, followed by the big man, Justin Gerbereux, and
then myself. Arjun was just behind me, and then it was Will, Alex, Ben, Terence,
Collin, Doug, Kris, Mellow and Zero rounding out our top 15, all under 1:03.

What it came down to today wasn't about winning or losing (cliche), but really
about getting together as a team. While most of us see one another on Mondays,
we don't get the chance to all kick it that often, other than the Birthday Party
and other select races. I reprieve you from all competing in this race next
year, unless of course you want to try and take on the evil Striders again. I,
for one, am planning on racing Boston 2009, which means reversing my schedule to
hit USXC Champs, and Club Challenge will wind up being a big test event.

Next BIG event is Shamrock 5k, if you haven't registered, try to do that prior
to March 1 when the rates go up! Then we'll start getting signed up for Broad
Street soon too.

Ryan
