The run is on for 8 a.m. Saturday (if the streets aren't covered with snow and
ice), launching from the Donna's coffee and bar in Charles Village and checking
out several of the city's great neighborhoods. We'll go south and north and east
for a mere 12 miles before returning to Donna's to chase away their normal
Saturday crowd.
Once again, this is a Bonus Run!! You can either do six or 12 miles or maybe
9.something. These miles are guaranteed, no wrong measurements. Both loops of
the two six miles courses are pretty equal as far as difficulty, although one
loop includes the Mervo High incline. The other loop has more of a steady climb
as you return from downtown.
For those who want to do the second six miler, meet us at Donna's, located at
St. Paul Street and 31st Street, between ROUGHLY 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.
There's free, un-metered parking on Calvert Street and on St. Paul Street up
from Donna's.

I don't get this running craze. Where and when I was raised, the only time
you ran was when you played ball, someone or something was after you, or
a pig got loose. I just can't imagine why someone would want to run for
the heck of it.
I remember when I was about six, our neighbor's nasty turkey charged me
when I tried to shoo him out of our driveway so mom could back out with
the car. Now, there was a reason for running. I ended up going through a
briar patch because I was too little and not fast enough to shake him. I
remember when I was about thirteen, fourteen or so, running from the Good
Humor guy because I was the only one who was brave (or stupid) enough to
jump on the back of the truck, open the little door and grab boxes of ice
cream and toss them out before he got up too much speed and I had to jump
off. He caught on one day, slammed on the brakes, jumped out and chased
me, but I was much too fast for him.
I remember when it first got trendy, they called it jogging. Anyone remember
the Bobby Bare song, "The Jogger", or something like that. It was funny.
Supposed to be hard on all those little bones in your feet, ain't it? And
how about all that pressure constantly ramming down on your knees and ankles?
When I played neighborhood ball, now that was different. I was the kid who
always wanted to play another game when it was 97 degrees outside and everyone
else was pleading that one game was enough. I loved chasing fly balls in
the outfield. But running just for the heck of it?
Now, I enjoy a brisk walk. That's relaxing and invigoratin'. And you can
sing a lot better when walking, which I love to do.
Anyway, I just wanted to weigh in on running. Your post reminded me that
I've often thought about you folks when I drive by and pass you on the road.
It might be raining, snowing, 110 in the shade, and there they are - keeping
to their schedule I guess. And, just like the bike riders, they have to
buy all that special clothing, the speedo stuff, $150 shoes, gloves, water
bottles, and all the other paraphernalia, apparatus, whatever. And some
of 'em look so exhausted. They look like they're being tortured, or like
they're about ready to drop right there on the spot, and I say to myself,
"I wonder how far that poor guy made it from his house, 'cause I don't see
how he can go much farther". Oh, and I like how some of 'em run in place
or circles when they come to a stop sign or traffic light and they have
to wait to cross. Do they lose points or something if they come to a stop
and just stand there? And what is it with some of 'em who hug the white
line when there's like ten more feet of road shoulder to their right, or
they're down on the road NEXT to the sidewalk? Don't they know that there
are some idiots out there who want to see how close they can get to the
runners with those camper-special mirrors on their '77 pickup trucks?
Oh well, just having a little fun with one of those things in life I don't
understand. Like they say, whatever floats your boat.

Subject: Re: New Marathon in Frederick
(Note: John, along with Dave Cooley, measured and certified this course.)
The Frederick Marathon is fairly flat - with some (gently) rolling country
hills from mile 13 to 23 on New Design Road - which has great country
scenery on it. The toughest hill is at mile 23 coming back into town when
you climb up and over Route 15 to get back into town. (At least that
seemed like the toughest part to me when I measured it.) None of the hills
are
particularly long or difficult.
I think the parts through town in the first half are mostly enjoyable.
From mile 10 (to mile 11.5 you have the unique experience of running through
an
old cemetery with many soldiers from the Civil War buried there.
You finish with a half loop of the Frederick High School track - within
a
half block of where you start.
I also think the City of Frederick will do a great job to support the
whole thing.

Regarding sudden cardiac arrest, it is my understanding that there is a growing suspicion that plaque formation caused by certain bacteria (e.g., forms of clamydia) may be the basic cause of cardiovascular disease. I'm sure many of you know Gabe Mirkin, MD. Although he now is a cyclist, he was a very active runner with the DC Road Runners. His web site www.drmirkin.com is a wealth of health and fitness information, all of it with references to peer-reviewed research. A brochure he wrote back in the '60's attracted me to DCRR in 1967, which led to a long RRCA association. He has been following research in heart disease since he found he had the highest cholesterol level as a med student at Harvard. He also has a radio show.

Planning is well underway for the 47th annual Baltimore St. Patrick Parade - that includes the Shamrock 5K race.
An exciting development has occured. The parade and run have been contacted by Disney Studios to include the parade and the run in a scene for a major motion picture being filmed in Baltimore.
Not only will you be able to enjoy the thrill of running through crowds of parade and run spectators you will be able to do it in front of movie cameras.
Please take a moment to register for the March 16, 2003 Shamrock 5K race.
Many RRCA Clubs in the state have received bills for 2003 dues and insurance
that greatly exceed last year's budget, and may be more than the club's
finance's can handle. On the surface, it appears that the root cause appears
to be the RRCA building extra membership fees into its insurance premium,
and a change that allows the national HQ to bill local clubs and charge
each club who offers a family membership for each individual member of the
family.
Some club officers have told me that the new billing arrangement is not
acceptable given their organization's finances.
For an option, and return to lower rates, take a look at a new organization
founded by many of the original members of RRCA and their rates:

From: Rich Desser Subject: Re: Loch Raven on Sat if the Trail is a mess
Loch Raven is a problem. I went for a visit to see the status of the construction .What I found is that the road is open from Dulaney Valley to Providence (about 2.5 miles). The lot at Pierce's was chained. East of Providence heading toward Sanders is CLOSED with a guard. I spoke to the the guard and he indicated that police are regularly patrolling and handing out $100 tickets to trespassers. They are VERY serious about not being in this area of the watershed.
This event features a number of fixtures in the Baltimore Running Community
coming together to make things happen. The Falls Road Running Store is
spearheading the effort, the Parks and People Foundation are supplying the
host venue space, the Baltimore Road Runners are providing support, and
Dave Cooley, now of Charm City Run, returns to donate his guiding hand.
Nike is donating random prizes. Cari Bruziak donated the amazing Celtic
artwork on the DriFit running shirts. The Run/Walk/Eat/Volunteer Club is
using procedes from the event to buy seasonal gifts for programs administered
by the Police Athletic League and Jewish Family Services for underprivileged
children in the Baltimore Area during the December holiday season.
8:30 AM, Stieff Silver Building, 800 Wyman Park Drive

Shirts are almost sold out. Options for those on a marginal basis include:
A) Buying a shirt, then getting a refund if unavailable, or, B) Putting
your name on a list and waiting for the shirts to come in and be printed
on a second run. This may entail getting various similiar shirts from different
manufacturers since Nike is running low on some of their DriFit sizes in
this particular color.

Jim added comments to the "Winter Running Gear- Hands", not knowing all of the medical terminology. The condition mentioned about the cold hands may be Raynauds Syndrome. This takes place during the cold weather and starts at the finger tips as the blood circulation stops. In extreme cases the entire hands will turn completely pale which will be followed by a loss of strength. I have been coping with the condition since 1975. I invested in gloves up to $75 with no improvements.
I had a conversation with the late Dr. George Sheehan who had the same condition and was informed there was no cure for it. It was a matter of knowing the condition exist and managing.
The down side is that thawing out process when the blood starts to return to the fingers, it's something that you don't want to experience. There is one way to speed up that process and that by making small circles with the hands to force the blood back into the hands. What you do not want to do is to place your hands under warm water...yikes. Before you do that, grab a friend and rob them of their heat.
How does one live with it, well I'll have to seek the gloves out. To this point, I have been cheap, somehow I tried the plastic vegetable bags which you find at the super market and you place your hand inside and then in a mitten. This does not work well with gloves. If you keep all of the fingers together the heat stays better. I have used the Gortex shell and that works well even when in rains. The only thing you have to do is about every mile or so, raise the hand to drain the perspiration.
Once you have finished running it is best to dry the hands off and change into something dry. Now, in my case, as long as I ma moving there is no problem but just the normal standing around I can get hit with it.
I have a running partner who has the same condition and was converted over to a "bag man". Now, you know why during the winter you can't find plastic bags in the stores. There are probably more "bag men" and "bag ladies" out there that you don't know about.
The person who does not know gives you a strange look when half of your hand in the normal color with blood and you finger tips are pale. I just say it's a trick which I have developed in controlling my circulation. Hey, only in America, they believe it.
Your condition may be entirely different but then again, I'm no doctor. All I ask is that when you see me running with my hands in the air, just know, I'm draining. Stay warm and safe running.
