Patriots: Redman given the boot

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Thursday, June 2, 2005

News
Quarterback Chris Redman was released by the Patriots on Wednesday.
The former Raven signed a one-year contract with the Patriots this
offseason that would have paid him $540,000 this year had he made
the team, according to the Boston Globe.

Views
Redman was expendable after the Patriots signed veteran Doug Flutie
and selected Matt Cassel in the seventh round of the draft. Flute
will vie with Rohan Davey to be the top backup behind Tom Brady,
while Cassel is a long-term project.

We cant expect a judge to speed things up just for a Raven or any other athlete.
Ourselves we would have served our time by now and picked up trash on the side
of the road by now.

OWINGS MILLS - Baltimore Ravens <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/bal/>
defensive end Terrell Suggs <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6346/>'
felony aggravated assault case has dragged on for two years, and the
wheels of justice are trying the patience of coach Brian Billick.

Suggs rejected a plea bargain Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court
in Arizona, and the judge continued the trial until June 13.

That date conflicts with the Ravens' mandatory minicamp to be held June
13 to June 16, and Suggs has yet to attend two voluntary passing camps.

"It's frustrating when the legal process chooses to move at its own
pace," Billick said Monday as the Ravens opened a four-day passing camp.
"You have to respect that. There's nothing you can do to change that,
the continuances, the changes.

"Unfortunately, I've become all too familiar with it, and it is
frustrating. It ought not to have to be that way."

Suggs' two counts of assault stem from a March 29, 2003 fight at Phoenix
Municipal Stadium following a basketball tournament. Suggs has pleaded
not guilty. His agent has portrayed him as a "peace-maker" who acted in
self-defense.

"Everything we've heard, all the testimony, all the depositions, I'm
surprised it's even going to court," Billick said. "It's very clear what
happened. We have every confidence it's going to come out positive."

CODY UPDATE: Rookie outside linebacker Dan Cody
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7229/> disrupted several passing
patterns, proving to be a quick study in coverage techniques after
playing defensive end at Oklahoma .

The second-round draft pick intercepted a short pass from quarterback
Darian Durant and batted down a swing pass from starter Kyle Boller
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6355/> in the red zone.

"He's got some lanky arms," Boller said of the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Cody.
"I thought I would test him a little bit and the rookie got me. At least
his hands aren't that good."

QUICK HITS: Cornerbacks Samari Rolle
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4305/> and Chris McAlister
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4658/> didn't attend due to
scheduling conflicts, and Dale Carter
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2045/> and Cooper Carlisle
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5141/> manned the corners. Safety
Ed Reed <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5910/> and linebacker Ray
Lewis <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3542/> skipped voluntary
workouts for the second week in a row. ... Wide receivers Mark Clayton

<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6958/> (neck) and Derek Abney
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7003/> (shoulder) participated
fully in drills. ... Billick opened his commencement speech to the
University of Maryland -Baltimore on Friday with a highly personal
anecdote. The topic: his vasectomy. "If you were at the graduation, you
enjoyed it," Billick said. "It was a true story. That was the sad part."
... Offensive tackle Orlando Brown
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3018/> left practice early to rest
his surgically-repaired knee. "Don't count this old dog out," Brown
bellowed to reporters as he headed toward the locker room. ... Wide
receiver Randy Hymes <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6288/> sported
a pair of light purple tights after donning white tights last week. "If
the guy doesn't have a tights endorsement, he should," Billick said. ...
McDaniel College head coach Tim Keating and offensive line coach Aaron
Bartolain attended practice.

OWINGS MILLS - With the build and height of a tall shooting guard,
Clarence Moore <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6958/> wasn't
exclusively an inviting downfield target for quarterback Kyle Boller
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6355/> last season. Helmet-hunting
defensive backs and linebackers identified the rookie wide receiver as
too slender and a tad reluctant to challenge them across the middle.

Plus, the 6-foot-6 sixth-round draft pick's weight dipped as low as 205
pounds midway through last season even while emerging as a formidable
red-zone threat specializing in the fade pattern.

However, Moore's lack of upper body strength often prevented him from
gaining significant yards after the catch by breaking tackles. Escaping
cornerbacks' jam attempts at the line of scrimmage was another major
challenge.

After devoting himself to strength and conditioning coach Jeff Friday's
weightlifting regimen and increasing his calories this off-season, Moore
has bulked up to 220 pounds and hopes to be a lot more durable and
productive.

"I'll feel a lot better going across the middle now," said Moore, who
caught 24 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns last season. "When
you put on some good weight, you feel better all around. I finally put
on a little bit of muscle and gained some weight.

"I maintained my quickness and speed. If anything, I'm getting into my
patterns quicker because of my leg strength and I feel a lot more powerful."

Designated as the Ravens' No. 3 wide receiver behind starters Derrick
Mason <http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3988/> and Mark Clayton
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7198/> , Moore remains one of the
tallest wide receivers in the NFL.

Now, Moore, 22, looks a lot more like a football player than an NBA
athlete, crediting his time spent training with Friday along with
regular excursions to Outback Steakhouse and The Cheesecake Factory.

"For him to be able to hold up physically, I think he has a better
understanding that he needed that extra size to do what we're asking of
him," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "Plus, it's a natural maturation
for him. He's a tall, lean athlete.

"He could afford to put that weight on and it's not going to affect his
speed at all. In the long run, it's going to allow him to hold up much
better over a 16-game season."

The weight could increase Moore's role to include more intermediate
routes, moving beyond the jump-ball role he thrived in last season.

Moore caught two touchdowns apiece against the New York Jets
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyj/> and New York Giants
<http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/> , and Boller made it a habit to
lob the football up where only the former Northern Arizona standout
could grab it. He started six of the Ravens' final eight games, playing
in 15 games.

It was an encouraging season for a lower-round draft pick. Yet, there
were a few occasions where Moore appeared to short-arm passes over the
middle, flinching at the possibility of heavy contact.

"You need that extra muscle because while you're concentrating on the
ball, they're concentrating on hitting you," Mason said. "They are
coming full-force and trying to take your head off.

"I'm pretty sure Clarence wasn't afraid to go over the middle last year.
He was a bit underweight, and you're going to take some hard shots.
Those shots won't affect him as much as last year."

Moore wants to gain another seven pounds before training camp, reasoning
that the additional armor will protect him from injury. He can bench
press 300 pounds and leg press 500 pounds after his time in the
off-season conditioning program.

Although Moore was limited last week with a sore neck, he recovered
quickly and was back on the field Monday catching passes.

"I've always been that guy who liked to hit even though I was one of the
smaller guys," Moore said. "Now, I've got some force coming behind me
and I'm so much stronger than last year. I feel a lot more prepared than
my rookie season. I'm ready to go

with his great NBA finding in Kwame Brown. He once had a horse in the
Preakness but some Asian guy punched him during the race and the horse
suffered from Bi-Polar disease for years after that punch.

Cap-and-gowners set for earful from Billick By Jarrett Bell, USA
TODAY
Thu May 19, 6:27 AM ET

Brian Billick doesn't remember who the speaker was on his graduation
day at Brigham Young in the 1970s, when he sat in the stands and saw
classmates march across the stage in caps and gowns.
Now the Baltimore Ravens coach is on the other side of the
fence. About 1,500 students, primarily professionals finishing post-
graduate studies, will get an earful from the energetic keynote
speaker when he delivers his first college commencement address
Friday at the University of Maryland-Baltimore.

"They've been so immersed in law school and medical school," Billick
said Wednesday, "I'm wondering, 'Do they even know who the hell I
am?' "

Probably. T. Sue Gladhill, UMB's vice president of external affairs,
said Billick's name identification was a factor - in addition to his
reputation as a motivational speaker and track record for community
service - in the school's invitation. The school's campus is in the
shadows of the Ravens' home, M&T Bank Stadium.

Said Gladhill, "I wanted somebody that's going to be a draw to get
the students to attend."

Billick, who co-authored Competitive Leadership: Twelve Principles
for Success after coaching the Ravens to a Super Bowl XXXV crown, is
preparing a message heavy on accountability. He has preached that to
players, corporate executives and high school students.

"This is a defining moment for them," he said. "But as a speaker,
you can't be too full of yourself. They're not going to say, 'That
was the highlight of my day.' "

Like any good coach, Billick used videotape to prepare. He watched
the speech from UMB's ceremony last year by Meet the Press host Tim
Russert. "I realized that if you try to do too much, it just becomes
babble," Billick said. "You have to be very, very focused."

School officials told the long-winded Billick to limit remarks to 15
to 20 minutes.

"Hell, I don't even take a breath for the first 15 minutes," Billick
said. "That format and condensing the message, it's a challenge."

Fassel eyes an attitude adjustment
As passing camp begins, coordinator says Ravens offense needs 'to be on the
attack' to turn around unit's mind-set, fortunes
By Jamison Hensley
Sun Staff
Originally published May 17, 2005
The changes on the Ravens' offense were subtle during yesterday's first day of
passing camp, from a faster tempo in drills to more motion before the snap.

It's apparent the bigger project for new coordinator Jim Fassel is revamping not
the playbook but the offense's confidence.

The Ravens' offense finished second to last in the NFL last season and has
ranked 21st or worse the past three years.New excitement has been growing at the
Ravens' training complex since the arrival of new receivers Derrick Mason and
Mark Clayton. Still, Fassel remains the director of this attitude makeover.

"I think you'll see a definitive personality for the offense," coach Brian
Billick said. "Obviously, with Jim's experiences and where he's coming from as a
head coach, one of the priorities was to create a very specific personality and
to have a swagger about itself. You have to earn that, but when Jim stands there
in front of that
offensive group, there is a presence."

In the past, the personality of the Ravens' offense has been conservative. The
Ravens were just one of 10 teams who averaged more rushing attempts than passes
last season.

Fassel's reputation has a more aggressive flair. In his final five seasons as
head coach of the New York Giants, the team averaged being the ninth-best
passing team in the league.

"We want to be on the attack," Fassel said. "Part of that is you can't be stupid
with the ball and you can't penalize yourself. You've got to be efficient."

The Ravens were far from that yesterday. Quarterback Kyle Boller was
inconsistent on his throws, and Mason dropped a pass in the end zone.

On the first seven-on-seven drill, tight end Darnell Dinkins coughed up the
ball.

"It didn't make me happy when we fumbled it today," Fassel said. "We've got a
ways to go and a lot of things to work on. But I want their attitude to change
about what we're going to be about on offense."

While the Ravens build a new mind-set, Boller has worked hard to build
relationships with his new receivers.

After the 75-minute non-contact practice, he continued to throw one-on-one with
Mason, the high-profile free-agent pickup from the Tennessee Titans. They
finished up by taking a knee and chatting for an additional 10 minutes about
different routes and their personal lives.

Boller has extended a similar hand to Clayton, the team's top draft pick. He
even invited Clayton to stay at his house instead of the hotel where the rookies
sleep.

"Actually, the beds at the AmeriSuites [stink]," Clayton said. "I just wanted to
go in and hang out with him. That's part of building a relationship. Having it
off the field makes it a lot easier on the field."

The key for the Ravens is finding the self-assuredness to transform this
potential into production by the time the regular season begins in four months.

"You look around the league and the teams that are successful are the teams that
are confident," Boller said. "We have a very confident defense and that's why
they play well. That's how our offense needs to be.

"These are great opportunities to spend time together and build that unit. When
the season starts, you've got to believe that you can do things. And we have the
players that can do that."

NOTES: The Ravens remain confident that Deion Sanders will return as a nickel
back. "The plan is for him to join us for the June minicamps," Billick said.
"That was the plan all along, and I have heard nothing to indicate that won't
happen." ... Strong safety Ed Reed, who wants a new contract, was an unexpected
no-show at practice. "I visited with Ed last week and he didn't say anything
about not being here, so I am surprised he's not here," Billick said. "But this
is voluntary, so that's his choice. Why he's not here, you have to ask Ed."
Linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive end-linebacker Terrell Suggs also did not
attend. ... Clarence Moore, who is expected to be the No. 3 receiver, sprained
his neck and is considered day-to-day. Clayton (hamstring), cornerback Chris
McAlister (toe) and running back Musa Smith (leg) were limited because of
previous injuries. ... Tight end Todd Heap, who could miss half the preseason
while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery, watched from the
sideline. "I'll be ready to go for the season," Heap said. "I just want to make
sure everything is healed up and ready to go before I play."

Ther will be two other DL dressing for the games making 6 as opposed to 5 last
year. And one less LB to make up for going with 3.

On the DL there is that guy we picked in the second round last year and another
guy can't think of his name either that's a mass of humanity but Ryan says many
teams have inquired about his availibility.

They seem to like Jarret Johnson who can play either end position so just one of
the above mentioned DL will make the dressed out squad.

Not sure about the depth charts for LB's or DB's.

Billick also said the other night the Ravens are in a favorable cap position for
the next 2 or 3 years and that Boulware wasn't an absolute cap casuality but
that it was just a better investment in the future to retain the cap space.

Could just be that Jamaal is serving jail time during training camp and pre
season.

Also Heap is an unrestricted FA after this year.Let's hope
they can scrounge up enough bucks to keep him here.
