Another successful QC-Tri this weekend. While we missed most of the action going
on at the YMCA headquarters on Saturday, Chris, Mack & I had a great view of
things near Benton Avenue while operating the water station. When we weren't
catering to the 70+ athletes that would run by (twice), we were able to steal
views of the Capital High Bruins softball team over at Batch Field marching
toward a state championship all afternoon. Lots of walkers, bikers and even a
couple of dogs accessing the Centennial Trail also stopped at our little
waterin' hole for a visit and a cup of water "on the house." We also passed the
time watching the steady stream of trucks & trailers hauling brush, garbage &
other items on their dump run pilgrimages. Lots happening yesterday on Benton
Ave. yesterday!
Congrats, and thanks, to Russ & everyone else that helped pull off the Queen
City Triathlon. Good work to everyone that competed as well.

If anyone happens to have a gas-powered leaf blower they
would be willing to let me use either tonight or very early tomorrow morning,
could you call me at 431-4599? Thanks! An electric with a long extension cord
might work too.
Team,
All trails are in great condition. Rode Dump, the ridge, Wakina Sky, Diretissma.
The hills back in York (Jim Town road) are in good shape. Mostly rutless (this
time of year). Makes dirt road riding nice for now.
Dave and I are going to do an endurance ride on Saturday morning at 9am from my
house. If you would like to join us please meet us at the Bob's Valley Market at
9:45-10:00 or so. We plan on riding towards Flesher's Pass. Nice and easy,
enjoyable ride.
Have a good long weekend.

Tuesday evening I was in the area on my roadie & decided to try the Rally Ride
(fka, Hell Ride) that the Great Divide Team hosts. Meet @ 6:00 @ Spring Meadow
Lake. The ride goes up Birdseye Rd. & over Lincoln Rd. back to Helena. While
on the course, we practice pace lines, sprints & other team road racing tactics.
Admittedly, it's tough and folks will get dropped. However, we re-group 2 or 3
times along the way and also ride back into Helena as a group.
Greg Wirth was the only other rider that showed up Tuesday. Truth be told, by
the time we got back to Helena, he was pulling me on a chain with a dog collar.
Regardless, it's a good ride, a chance to get stronger on the bike & an
opportunity to gain a little race experience.
I'm tentatively planning to take a crack at the Cow Country Classic in a couple
weeks. Masters B. My first ever road race. Hopefully, the Tuesday night Rally
Ride serves me well.
I'm planning to try it again next Tuesday. Join me if you can make it.

Great work to everyone this week. On & off the course. I passed along our
team's thanks to the volunteers. My message is below.
_______________________________________________________________ Hello All,
Our inaugural Unravel the Scratchgravel mountain bike race has come and gone, so
I wanted to provide a final race report, offer sincere thanks to everyone that
chipped in & volunteered and close with some final thoughts. If I've missed
someone, please let me know or either pass along the following info...
We had a total of 78 riders compete on Sunday. 54 adults and 24 youngsters. Many
traveled from across the state to race. Kalispell, Missoula, Billings,
Butte...even Utah!
Racer Registration & Check-in: Chris Dexter, Melinda Barnes, Jill Hamilton &
Vivian Chaffer did an outstanding job getting everyone registered, numbered,
swag bagged and on their way. 78 racers processed in 90 minutes flat. Wow! Talk
about racing under pressure!
Race Timers: Melinda Barnes, Chris Dexter & Liz Townsend helped our great USA
Cycling Chief Referee, John Coulthard, in the race timing and scoring. They
worked as a team and successfully managed to get everyone's laps, time & place
recorded within a matter of minutes after the last racer crossed the finish
line.
Course Marshals: Our course marshals were great. Dennis Horton watched a tricky
crossing and made sure folks stayed on the course. Adele Delp watched a spot
where racers, speeding upwards of 30 mph, took a hard right and plunged into
some single-track. Along with dodging these fast-paced racers, Adele managed to
snap some awesome photos that we'll try to share with everyone. Gail Delp manned
the four-wheeler for us over by Head Lane & was able to successfully divert some
ATV'rs that had happened upon the race unexpectedly. Gail also kept in radio
contact with race headquarters throughout the race..."10-4, good buddy!" Jim
Barnes watched a tricky part of the course and, stuck in the middle of things,
kept the Cat 3's going left and the Cat 1's and 2's going right. In perhaps the
most impressive effort of the day on the course, Derek Bell watched his marshal
spot vigilantly and then managed to make it down the mountain in time to watch
his son race in the kid's event. Nice work, Derek! Craig Linke, David Cassidy
and Lonnie Olson were "down below" keeping racers on course as they negotiated
around the Echo Drive trailhead. All racers made it to the finish line safe and
on track. Congrats on a successful job!
Team BSC: During Sunday's racing, several members of Team BSC distinguished
themselves quite nicely out there on the course. Jerry Nelson & Dave Hamer came
in 1st & 2nd in the Cat 3 race. Big Russ Gates, after an early morning of
putting some final touches on the course, proceeded to plow through the Cat 2
race for a 3rd place finish. Jeff Linton, despite crashing (ahem) prior to the
race (!?!?!?) finished strong in the end. Joe Hamilton, after some extensive
Mai-tai training at sea-level in Hawaii recently, hauled his Rocky Mountain bike
around the course in fine fashion. Melinda's son, Willie Aguilar, helped out
extensively this weekend & also competed in the Cat 3 race in "Big Willie
Style!" Everyone's best performance, however, came both before and after the
racing. Course setup & marking. Helping out with the parking. Marshaling the
kids and juniors races. Course breakdown and cleanup. Fantastic effort and race
results, fellas!
Have I missed anyone and anything? I apologize up front as I probably have.
Also, I'm interested in any thoughts, suggestions or concerns that you came
across on Sunday. If we decide to do this race again next year, we'd like to do
it better & your input is valuable toward making this happen.
On behalf of the entire Big Sky Cyclery race team, thank you for donating part
of your Sunday afternoon and making the Unravel the Scratchgravel race a great
experience for everyone. Our team appreciates it. The racers that competed
appreciate it. The kids, parents & coaches that came out to this event
appreciate it.
Thanks Again,
Chad Dexter
Yes, it was awesome to see the Unravel the Scratchgravel on the front page, with not one, but TWO full color photos. That is unbelievable and a testament to Chad's work!!
On our way into town yesterday, we passed cars that had mtn bikes with numbers on them. Very cool.
I am looking for a long road ride this weekend - around 50 - either Saturday or Sunday. I don't know Pipestone. Is that a mtn ride or a road ride? Let me know if you are interested and where we should go. Perhaps this is a good time to go to the Garrison frontage road?

Any budding triathletes out there who want to learn some running tips?
I've set up two triathlon coaches to come to Helena for a running clinic, Sunday
May 31st. Details below. RSVP to me (kp@...) or to Matthew Parks
(matthewbryanparks@...)
___________________________________________________________
Running Technique Clinic – Sunday, May 31st from 4 – 6pm
(location to be announced)
Cost of clinic is $20 per person
Clinic includes:
• Review & Discussion of Running Styles
• Proper Warm Up (stretching and mobilizations)
• Evaluation of Running Form
• Skills and Drills to Improve Your Biomechanics While Running
• Injury Prevention Strategies
• Basic Programming
This clinic is a hands-on experience. USAT-certified Triathlon Coaches Matthew
Parks and Aubrey Curtis will be on hand to lead the group, starting with a
discussion of current running techniques and finishing with basic programming
for the current season. Parks and Curtis will apply current research into their
presentation to help you achieve an improved, faster running technique. Some of
the techniques reviewed will be the classic heel strike, mid-foot strike, and
forefoot striking. They will evaluate your current running form and fine tune
your mechanics via skills and drills along with verbal cues. The clinic will
end with a game plan to reduce your potential for injury and provide some basic
programming during your Spring and Summer race season.
If there are questions about the clinic, please feel free to call Matthew at

Great weekend of riding up in the Scratchgravels. Friday night, Russ, Melinda,
Jim & I rode with some folks from Team GDC and Team Velo. This afternoon, Jeff
& I were riding the course counter-clockwise when we came across some riders
trying to "unravel" the course.
Presently, there are four racers signed up on-line to race and I'm expecting
lots more this week. Lots of interest..."if we build it, they will come." BSC
racers, please sign-up on-line for quicker registration.
Below is the email update I've sent all the great, spectacular, wonderful,
outstanding folks that have already agreed to help us out on our race. See you
this weekend!
-------------------------
Hello,
Thank you to those that were able to respond back last week about volunteering
at our team's May 17th bike race. Interest appears to be growing daily about
this upcoming event. On Friday night, I pre-rode the course with eight riders.
This afternoon four others joined me. The course is dry & the weather for next
weekend is looking great. As this race is part of the the Montana Off-Road Race
Series (MORS) we're expecting racers from across the state to take part.
Here's an update on where things stand regarding volunteer assignments.
Racer Registration & Check-in: The following folks have agreed to help out
during the 9:00 to 10:30 registration process: Melinda Barnes, Chris Dexter,
Jill Hamilton, Claire Vandewalle and Karen Powell. I asked our race official,
John Coulthard, to provide a little background instruction on what to expect
during the registration process....
1. Have your racer release forms on a separate table with pens and instruct your
help not to let people fill them out in front of them.
2. Have 3 people sitting at stations with ample table space:
3. The first person will check the racer release form for completeness and the
riders license (Cat 1, 2, 3 and that they are licensed for MTB and not just
road) the current license has a blue title block and 2009 in blue, if they
don't have a license have the person write one-day across the top.
4. The first person will pass the form to the second, who will verify the
category and assign the correct number. Have that person write the category,
gender and race number across the top of the release form and add the name,
gender, category and race number in a notebook.
5. The second person will pass the form to the 3rd who will take the
registration payment (we'll have a list of those that have already paid early
on-line available)
John's wife, who is also a race official, is planning to be there to help out
during this process as well.
Race Timers: Melinda Barnes, Chris Dexter & Jill Hamilton have volunteered to be
at the finish line to do the race timing and scoring. The majority of the
junior racers will race at 11:00. Our main and, presumably, largest race will
take place at noon with Category 1, 2 & 3 level competitors. We could have
upwards of 50+ racers. MTB races are not the most difficult of cycling events
to score, but it's good to have several sets of eyes here counting laps,
tracking race plates and documenting finishing times. John & his wife will be
able to assist in this part of the race, but I'm still looking for a few more
folks to volunteer here.
Course Marshals: I've been able to secure some additional help with the course
marshaling. Jim Barnes and Gail & Adele Delp have agreed to watch the course
over near the Head Lane Trailhead. This is great as this section of the course
is perhaps the most confusing to "unravel" for racers. Also, the Delps have
some walkie-talkies. If there are others out there that have these, we could
agree on a set channel to be on for improved communication during the race.
Karen Powell, after she helps with registration, can help out as a marshal as
well. Karen, I tentatively have you at a spot near the finish line where you
can point racers in the correct direction after they complete a lap...practice
pointing right for the juniors and left for the Cat 1/2/3 race! Lonnie & Diane
Olson will be stationed on Echo Drive right next to the trailhead to help out on
the juniors and Cat 1/2/3 race. Lonnie, I'll talk with you more about this
later this week. Derek Bell will watch a tricky right hand turn onto some
single-track at mile 3.1 of the large course. Dennis Horton will watch a spot
on the course at the bottom of some single-track to make sure folks keep ridin'
straight. There are a couple more spots I'd really like to have watched, so I'm
still actively recruiting volunteers. I've sent an email out to the Helena
Bicycle Club about this and need to make a few more phone calls. I'm confident
they are out there, and I'm confident they will be found!
That's all for now. I plan to be up at the Echo Drive Trailhead Saturday @ 4:00
to begin marking the course and parking lot. If there is anyone interested in
joining myself and others for this, please feel free to swing by.
Please don't forget that volunteer release form. This can be found on-line at
http://www.usacycling.org/forms/volunteer_release.pdf. Please print it off and
bring a signed one on the 17th. Don't worry if you forget...I'll have these
forms at the event as well.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for agreeing to help out on this event. It's
gonna be a great event for racers of all ages & you're a big reason why!
I'll send a final pre-race update out either Thursday or Friday.

I sincerely apologize for not making it to the meeting last night. Especially to Russ because I was supposed to get checks from him.
My new dog was running off leash, couldn't find me or smell me because of the wind, and simply walked home without me. I, however, was on Nob Hill looking for her until 7 pm.
She must learn to use the cell phone to tell me these things! Live and learn.
There has been no activity in our bank account since the last meeting.
Russ and Carolyn: I won't be able to volunteer at Queen City because I am going to register to race it instead.
Chad: Good luck with the Scratchgravel race!! It is going to be great.
Our MTB race is May 17th, and I recently contacted our potential volunteers. If
you're not planning to race it, please consider serving as a volunteer. Also,
I've shared below some dates/times that I'll be out at the Scratchgravels in the
next two weeks...if you want to pre-ride the course.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings!
As you're aware, the Big Sky Cyclery Race Team is putting on its very first
mountain bike race May 17th (Sunday) in the Scratchgravel Hills,
http://www.montanacycling.net/documents/flyers/2009/URTSGflyer.pdf. This is the
first race of this season's Montana Off-Road Race Series and we're very excited
about getting the opportunity to host this
Our team greatly appreciates that you have expressed interest in helping out as
a race-day volunteer. I'm sure the racers, many of whom will travel from out of
town to compete, will be grateful as well. I've spoken with some of you already
about this event & how you might be interested in contributing. However, as
we're just two weeks away from the race, I need to start confirming who can
still help out. As well, I would like to get specific volunteer duties assigned
at this time. Specifically, there are three areas of opportunity on race-day in
which you could help out.
Racer Registration & Check-in: From 9:00 to 10:30 on the day of the race,
individuals wanting to race need to register at our trailhead headquarters on
Echo Drive in the Scratchgravels. Volunteers here would help get folks signed
up, collect any fees, assign race numbers, hand out participant bags and help
get answers to general questions that might come up. I will be on-site during
registration and so will our race's USA Cycling Official, John Coulthard.
Presently, I have the following four individuals listed as willing to help with
registration: Melinda Barnes, Chris Dexter, Jill Hamilton & Claire Vandewalle.
We could use a couple more volunteers here, so if you've got any experience in
this area & are interested, please let me know. Also, if anyone has a laptop
computer with a portable printer that they'd be willing to bring, please let me
know. Automation would greatly help out in this process.
Race Timers: There are three separate races scheduled for the day. The juniors
(racer age 11 up to age 18) will race at 11:00. Our main and, presumably,
largest race will take place at noon with Category 1, 2 & 3 level competitors.
We could have upwards of 50+ racers. After that, at 2:00 there will be a kids
(under 10) fun race. The volunteers serving as race timers will be at the
finish line to record the laps & finishing times of each racer. Presently, I
have the following three individuals listed as willing to help out with the
timing: Melinda Barnes, Chris Dexter & Jill Hamilton. Another 2 or 3 folks to
help out here makes it a lot easier process, so if you're interesting in this
specific role, please let me know. Also, if you've got a stop watch, please
bring it.
Course Marshals: Basically, being a course marshal entails being at a specific
spot on the course during the race to point racers in the right direction and,
in the event of an accident requiring some medical attention, reporting this
back to the race headquarters. While I'm not anticipating any accidents (the
course is not extremely technical), there are several spots on the route where,
even with course markings, there's a chance racers could end up taking wrong
turns...happens at every race it seems. The more marshals we have on the 6-mile
course the better. If you have a bike (and helmet), four-wheeler/dirt bike
(with an even better helmet) or a good pair of walking shoes, this might be the
perfect job for you! There's also a couple of areas right on Echo Drive, close
to headquarters, that wouldn't require much distance getting to. Presently,
here are the folks that have previously agreed to marshal: Dan Prentice, Lonnie
Olson, Derek Bell & couple of relatives of one of our team members (Joe
Hamilton). We could use a lot more willing and able marshals.
A few other items I'd like to share at this time.
On race day, I would recommend that you bring with you a lunch or something to
snack on. Sorry, as this is our first mountain bike event, our budget is pretty
tight. In the future we hope to be better to our volunteers who are so good to
us. In addition, think about bringing a lawn chair, a coat (it gets windy up
there) and sunscreen (I'm being optimistic).
As this is a USA Cycling sanctioned event, I'm asked to have volunteers sign a
release form. This can be found on-line at
http://www.usacycling.org/forms/volunteer_release.pdf. Please print it off and
bring a signed one on the 17th. Don't worry if you forget…I'll have these forms
at the event as well.
Prior to the race on the 17th, if you're interested in checking out the race
site, I am planning to be out at the Echo Dr. Trailhead on the following dates &
times…
Friday, May 8th ~6:30 pm
Sunday, May 10th ~4:00 pm
Saturday, May 16th ~4:00 pm
Look for the silver Toyota Tacoma with the Kenda bumpersticker. Note: on the
16th I'll be setting up the course so if you're interested in pounding some
stakes bring a hammer!
That's it for now. Please get back to me if you're still able to volunteer, and
for what duty you'd like to have. As well, if you have any questions, please
ask. Feel free to share this email with any one else you know who might be
interested in being a part of this. I'll send another email update out next
weekend.
Thanks again for offering to volunteer. Cross your fingers for good weather!

Things are looking promising for a perfect ride weekend. Today. 10:00.
Downtown Bagel Company. I'm gonna suggest we take a shot a Mac Pass today, but
am open suggestions. We can decide @ 10:00. Hope to see you there.
Also, Sunday @ 10:00, word is that Melinda is hosting a women's road ride. Meet
at the Big Sky Cyclery shop. A couple of X chromosomes should get you in. The
wife is putting me to work in the yard tomorrow while she attends this one.
Chad
Team,
Just an update Ed, Mark and I did two laps around the proposed Unravel the
Scratch Gravel race course today. Trails are 100% dry and great early season
riding. We are lucky to have that mountain right in the middle of town!
Chad - great job arranging this course.
Is anybody riding tommoroww?
If you change your mind let me know. I would still like to ride around Canyon
Ferry before summer traffic hits.

Hi all,
A Saturday 8 am ride
is being put together from the Cupola park on Colonial. So far, there are
two of us.
I ride about 15 mph
average. That doesn't mean you have to go that speed, I just don't want
to be too far back.
Do you want to join
us? I am thinking that the route could go up to the top of Boulder Hill,
or stay in the valley if it does, indeed, snow.
Let me know if you are
interested and we can work out specifics.

Here are two options to ride in Great Falls for those that will be there on Thursday or Saturday. At this oint I will probably ride on Saturday, if I can wait until 1PM!
I will let Jerry know. Call me at 461-1414 if you want to ride in GF Saturday
Saturday ride meets at Gibson Park, near the bandshell, at 1 pm. We'll ride 40+ miles out the Smith River highway. Thursday night (5:30) rides also going which you should attend if you are available.

Also, if there is a GF team ride scheduled for this weekend, could we maybe participate?
I mentioned last night that Kenda was offering a deal that, if you purchase a

As agreed to at our meeting last night, I have notified Byron Deford (Team GDC)
and Scott Herzig (Montana Velo) that, effective immediately, our team has agreed
to move the start time and location of its Saturday team road ride to 10:00 at
the downtown Bagel Company (735 N. Last Chance Gulch). I'll be there Saturday
for the ride.
Team,
The weather for Saturday is calling: 20 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly
cloudy, with a high near 41. North northeast wind between 6 and 9 mph.
I was thinking of taking one of three different rides:
1) Pass York to Trout Creek Canyon (dry dirt road ride)
2) From E. Helena A & W around Canyon Ferry Lake (early season long distance
ride to beat the boat traffic).
3) To Boulder and back (good pass climbs).
Let me know if anybody is interested in joining me. My home phone is 227-3318 or
w is 444-7005 or you can just respond back.
Thanks,
I did it last week and it is a nice flat course. Last weeks 4 laps+ was 34 miles. This week is 5 laps+, estimate 42 miles. If you are interested in going let me know if you want to carpool. Last week I left at 8:30, raced at noon and was home by 4:00.
As of right now, weather.com shows Clinton at race time, noon, to be 39 degrees and 10% chance precip, but 44 degrees and 40% chance precip by 2pm
If the whether looks bad and the ride is cancelled, or I cancel myself, I will make to to Bobs at 10am.

Hey Chad,
Was up on the Mac pass today. Pretty wet and messy. You have kahoneys to go
down that hill in that condition.
Anyway, won't be able to make it. But I do plan on riding to the top of
Boulder hill on the frontage road. Feel free to join me. Unfortunately, have
to work till 5 pm. But it does not get dark to almost eight now.
See ya.

As of right now, I am planning on opening the registration
Monday afternoon. We will include the USAT one-day license in the $45
entry fee this year. If it turns out to be a problem, we can re-evaluate
for next year, but I think we’ll be o.k. The race flyer should be
ready to go tomorrow some time. I’ll advertise on the same tri
websites as last year as well. I am also planning on sending an e-mail
out to last year’s participants to let them know registration is open,
and to a few other people who have expressed interest this year.
I am going to meet with Teri Wright from the YMCA some time
soon and get some details worked out for a kids race to be held after the
regular race finishes up, so if anyone has any questions or concerns in that
department, let me know. The Y seems to be a pretty good location since
we can keep them off the streets and in sight the whole time.
Hi Chad,
The more rides the better in my opinion. Whatever works Joe

Hi All,
Over the past week, the subject of our team's day & time has come up in my
discussions with other local cyclists. Saturday @ noon also happens to be the
same day & time for when both the Great Divide Cyclery and the Montana Velo
squads have their respective team rides. Three group road rides presently going
on all at once in one town.
The good folks at GDC & MT Velo that approached me about this were also
wondering about the possibility of BSC moving its scheduled group ride. This
being in the hopes of having more weekend group ride options for everyone. The
inclination appears to be for Sunday. There was also the thought brought that
all race teams eventually agreeing on a "neutral" start location...perhaps the
downtown Bagel Company providing folks the best place to launch either west or
east out of Helena depending on where the group decides to ride that day.
Anyways, I offered to pass along this info and thoughts to the BSC team. Mull
it over, then perhaps we can decide on what we want to do at our next team
meeting...if not sooner. BTW, I'm in Billings this weekend, so no group ride
(with any of the three Helena teams) plans in my near future.
Keep Ridin'

I heard back from USAT regarding the one-day license fee that is required for all participants in a sanctioned race that do not have an annual license. They are covering the $150 sanctioning fee, but not the one day license fee, which is $10 per racer. We have decided to sanction the race this year, primarily because of the insurance coverage USAT provides, but we need to decide whether or not to add an additional $10 to the entry fee for the one day license or if we want to include the license fee in the existing registration cost of $45.
I would like to include the license fee in the $45 registration for several reasons. Primarily, the benefit of sanctioning this race is primarily ours in the form of the insurance. As a beginner triathlon, most of the people we are hoping to attract are not trying to qualify for nationals, which can only be done at sanctioned races. Most of our racers will not have an annual license, and I don't want to see the additional cost deter them from signing up. And considering our profit from last year, and an anticipated increase in entries this year, I don't think our profit will suffer too heavily if we do cover the $10 fee. I definitely want to make sure we make some money, but I don't view it as a primary goal for this event.
I also do not want to be the only one involved in this decision, so let me know where you stand on the issue. I would like to have the registration open by the end of next week, and have the advertising out there, so if you could get back to me by Tues. that would be great. Thanks!
I agree with you...up the fee by $10 to include the registration...
