Believe us now!!

Fortunately it wasn't the first race of our series so I am not sure how many would have run as well as they did  but 134 finished 9.3 and 25 did the 5.3. which is amazing for a January race and especially the Terrible Tyler ( Thanks Eric for the quick turnaround on the results. Now we will expect it!!)  . I think a few people learned a lot about hill running and strategy . It will be an interesting race for the half marathon which a lesson learned may be a strong finish  and a fast time.

Special thanks to Bruce Kuo as first time Race director with a less than full crew.Volunteers did a great job including Jim and Bob's kids who took advantage of their jobs at the Hot chocolate and food table!!

This week its pick your way and Rich Dunning will be our race director. This race is a lot of fun as you race to the finish against someone in the other direction. Debate will go on which is faster but your the best judge since you  run both ways now. By the way if things are close and crowded at finish give space to runners behind you and in front of you and let Rich and crew have time to sort it out.

Saturday

We will head back to Washington Crossing ( not for the deer hunt!!) and put some miles in on the canal in prep for the half . I little extra miles for spring marathons and 50k or 50 mile trail runs will help also. We will start at 8:00AM from the parking lot on the Jersey side right next to Washington Crossing bridge.

By the way speaking of trails good luck to Mary Vish on Saturday AND Sunday for her 100 mile run) Rocky Racoon 100 miler in Huntsville , Tx if you want to sign up for next year!!! http://www.tejastrails.com/Rocky.html)

Sunday

Pick your way!!

Any other plans please reply

Some notes from our members :

From Mike Gross:

I wanted to make you all aware of a great race, Frostbite 5 Miler ( Feb 18) .  BCRR’s own Alan Braverman is the race director this year and despite the fact the he is my brother-in-law I still recommend it highly.  He managed to get Amy Freeze of NBC10 to be their official starter!  The course is basically flat and fast and the turnout is good.   It makes for a tough weekend double but with the number of folks that run Ultras in our club this should be no big deal at all.

In all seriousness I have run and volunteered at this race and it is a good one.  It is amazing how much faster you can run when the course is not in Tyler!!

Please go to the link below for more information and to register on line!

http://www.aarclub.com/frostbite/default.htm

From Melanie:

Mark your calendars, book the babysitter, plan now ... the 2005 - 2006 Winter Series Banquet will be held at the North Hampton Valley Country Club, from 6PM to 10PM on Sunday, March 26th

Look for more information in the February BCRR Newsletter!

From Chris Mortensen:

To those of you interested in trying a 50k this year there will be a group of us heading to the HAT (Hinte-Anderson Trail) Run on March 25th.

This is an excellent first 50k consisting of two well aided loops.  It isn't far away (an hour and 15 minutes if I remember correctly - anyone remember exactly?)  If you are interested please contact myself or Bob Curci.

For more info go to:  http://www.hatrun.com/

Caesar Rodney 1/2 marathon:

If you interested and know you want to run let Greg know.  I know what planning is like ( I am not mentioning that summer race just yet but its coming !!) so   if you  can commit it helps a lot.

  From Bob C :

Joe, Chris and I have been running most Wednesdays at Snowball Gate starting at 6:00 PM.

The run starts at 6:00 PM. We do @ 6-8 miles, but since it is different loops, you can run shorter versions. The course is run on  well-lit rolling hills. We meet at the hockey rink  on Forsythia Crossing (the road that connects Forsythia Gate and Snowball Gate).

Have a good week!!

Bill

Dear members and Chris,

Please excuse my last e-mail. As I read it on my own computer it dosn't look exactly how I intended it. Just because my life is full of work at this time of year, and running and 4 kids, doesn't necessarily mean that 60% of the club is in the same predicament.

Chris,

Remember you have a life. And that life isn't 100% filled with running or kids. Unfortunately about 60% of the club's members are filled with either work, running or kids.

I haven't thought about Caesar Rodney either, I'm working up a Super Bowl frenzy this week and maybe even checking out the Skiing at the Olympics next week.

However I am thinking about Boston on 4/17.

I guess you have missed all of those R2C conversations about an August race!

I do have a month, but I always end up running around last minute trying to get applications or signatures or subs.  It looks like 6 or 7 teams this year, so more potential last-minute problems.

A few more runners signed up and I know of a handful of non-commitals.
I am only sending in full teams of 7 and I am adding people as I get
their money, so don't get left out.

A woman who wasn't familiar with Tyler asked me last wee which I thought
was tougher - today's Terrible Tyler race or Caesar Rodney.  I said
Terrible Tyler.  I saw her after the race and she agreed.  So don't be
intimidated.

Remember, there are 7 to a team and only the top 5 count in scoring.  So
there is a place for everone regardless of speed.  It is about
participation and showing what a great club we have, and I would like to
have at least as many teams as the 5 we sent last year.

The following is what I have so far.

I got applications and money from:

Ed Buck
Lou Coppens
Greg Grace
Fred Gropper
Len Herman
Rob Hoy
Mary Kirsch
Tim Lenihan
Christine Mackrides
Aashish Rangwalla
Bill Schaffling
Jim Stein
Mike Weiss

I got applications from:

Mark Ashby
Jim Barger
Joe Boyce
Glenn Cohen
Rich Dunning
Tracy Ewasky
Jim Larson
Jay Miers
Karl Prior
Carmine Sesa
Lisa Smedley

The following expressed interest but I have no application or money:

Brian Donnelly
Ray Galenty
George Munro
Melane Schranz

Hey,
I need to know if this is getting ugly for real or are you guys just setting up for some fun competition for Sunday--you know going in two different directions to see who's  more 'right'!?!!
I also need to say that if an organizer asks for more time, give them all they need, I believe there must be a reason, with out needing to find out why and if I'm not 'getting-my-hands-dirty' , so to speak, with them, than I have no cause complain.
I also need to say , I know there is a way to get Yahoogroups to bundle the emails, so no one needs to get more than one e mail page with all the responses listed with subject titles--so if you don't want to, or don't need to, you don't have to 'hear' all the stuff on that race, and if you want 'all' on another race you can get that instead. We are being inundated with information from our computers, yet information handling is exactly what the computer is good for.
This would be a good time for some-one with some tech skills to help me out here!!
Thanks, Margie
P.S.
I am a mother, I work doing diagnostic testing, and I just ran a marathon. I know that the most important thing I've ever done is to teach my children to have confidence in themselves and act with patience, and give every reasonable person they meet the gift of confidence in them, (until they prove you wrong).

Thanks Greg,
For putting together the teams. Anyone who has tried to arrange one of these group outings can appreciate trying to get a handle on things early. It's people like me with the maybes that make you want to nail down as many committed runners as soon as possible.

I guess you have missed all of those R2C conversations about an August race!

I do have a month, but I always end up running around last minute trying to get applications or signatures or subs.  It looks like 6 or 7 teams this year, so more potential last-minute problems.

Chris Thompson wrote on 1/31/2006, 10:00 AM:

I'm gonna do it, I've already told you this.  I just don't see why we have to be thinking about a race in March when the Winter Series is now.  So I guess put me down on one of your list.

Greg,
Put me down as interested. I have to see how far my kids go swimming, (finals, districts, states) that was the problem last year.

Mark Ashby
Jim Barger
Joe Boyce

But did you walk?  That's OK if you did.  CR is easier.  I haven't made teams yet, since I am not sure who is running.  But I am sure there is a spot for you.  There is usually a carpool caravan that meets at the Great American Pub in Langhorne.  There may be carpools meeting other places as well.

Let me know.

I would like to start collecting at least the applcation and waiver information from people who think they want to run.  The form is attached.  If you don't get it let me know and I will send it directly.   If you can also bring a check for $28.50 made out to me, that would be great.  I will not cash the checks and you are not committed.  So if you are unsure I would prefer that you give me the items and I will return or destroy your check if you decide to not run.  Teams and participants won't be finalized until late February.

See me before or after a Winter Series race.

Thanks everyone for the input.  I think harder than the race may be
convincing my wife that it is worthwhile for me to travel up to New
Hampshire to run.  I did hop on the treadmill this morning.  I have
never put the grade above 4% and the average at Mt. Washington is
12%.  Well after putting it up to 12% and just walking at 4.0, I am
overwhelmingly intimidated by this race.  The normal person would
not entertain the idea.  However, since I run and the runner's mind
can be described many ways, normal not being one of them, I am
motivated to give it a go.  The lottery begins March, 1st so I have
some time to think it over.

Hiked along side id but never ran it.

You are talking mt Washington, the place that has the highest recorded wind speed in the world (well over 200mph)

They also have a bike race for you after youre finished running it!

Pinkham notch NH

It was so steep they built a cog railway to get tourists up and down (other side of the mtn).

I was approached by a co-worker and runner about joining him for the
Mt. Washington Road Race in New Hampshire.  He said it was approx. 7.5
mile race.  He told me it was scenic, well organized, and difficult
but only one hill. I checked the race online and found the one catch
that he failed to mention, the hill is the whole race, 7.5 miles at a
5,000 ft. climb - Yikes!  Has anyone ran this race or heard from
anyone who has?

Thanks,

Mark
