AUSTIN ST. JOHN GIVES HIS NEW CAREER SOME KICK! [PART II]
This comes from Teen Beat: November 1995:
TEEN BEAT: How did you get started? AUSTIN: I auditioned for Power
Rangers.
I had just finished high school and I intended on opening a martial
arts
school. I wanted to teach. A friend of mine nagged me to go on the
audition and I ended up getting it, and here I am. I wasn't sure I
wanted
to act at first. I didn't like cameras and I wasn't real comfortable
in
front of them.
TEEN BEAT: You've overcome that by now, we're sure.
AUSTIN: By now I'm used to it. Now there can be 50 of them around
and I
just tune them out.
TEEN BEAT: Tell us about the instructional video you're working on
now.
AUSTIN: It's called Karate Masters. It's an instructional martial
arts
video for anyone who wants to learn, based more towards younger kids.
TEEN BEAT: Is it for beginners? AUSTIN: Yes, it's the basics. It's
put
together with some fights. There's quick cuts of rapid action mixed
in to
pump them up. There's plenty of action. But I try to play down the
fact
that it's meant for self defense only. It takes a bigger man to walk
away
from a fight than to start one.
TEEN BEAT: How long have you been studying martial arts? AUSTIN:
Since I
was five. I've studied 13 different styles. I have a second degree
black
belt in Taekwondo, which is the style that this video is based on.
TEEN BEAT: Do you ever run into kids that recognize you? AUSTIN: All
the
time. They ask, "Why's you leave the Power Rangers?" TEEN BEAT:
What's
this about CD-ROM? AUSTIN: There are several. One is an encyclopedia
of
martial arts and another is a game based on Cyber Strike.
TEEN BEAT: Do you ever have any spare time? AUSTIN: Yes [laughs]. I
read,
lift weights, practice martial arts, I like to go hiking. I have my
Harley. My Harley is like my girlfriend because at the moment I
don't
have a girlfriend.
TEEN BEAT: So what's next? AUSTIN: I plan on making a transition into
more
adult roles. I don't want to lose my fan base, I mean it's worldwide
now.
I hope to let my fans grow up with me.
MAX: He managed to work being single into a question about spare
time.
He must be *VERY* desparate.
