Four of the six teams in the NL Central remain alive for the postseason, which
means that baseball tickets are still relevant in St. Louis, Cincinnati,
Milwaukee and Houston. The final standings are far from determined both within
the division and for the Wild Card, so the next couple of months are going to be
extremely interesting.
St. Louis Cardinals
Currently:
The Cardinals have a decent ...

The Carlos Beltran sweepstakes are over and the Houston Astros are the
winners. After spending the offseason recruiting Roger Clemens and Andy
Pettitte, the Astros have found themselves mired back in the pack of a tough NL
Central division race.
Beltran brings a flashy glove to center field and some excitement and run
production to the top of the lineup. Of course, players like him dont come wi...

of course "Titanic"....Probably the most accurate account of the actual
events...Now the love story between "Rose" and "Jack" is a sad tale...."Jack"
saves her life like 5
times on the ship......Also she has at least 3 times to get on a lifeboat..But
no she promises to "NEVER LET GO"....So they survive the sinking and find a
floating door..."Rose" who is twice the size of "Jack" takes up the entire
floating lifesaver....And only minutes before his death she again promises to
NEVER let go....Minutes later she prys his icy cold dead fingers off the
floating door and saves herself...She goes on to live for 90 or more years while
"Jack" is the fish buffet.....So very sad......(For our new members I know that
the "Never let go" statement was the bond they had..And I know that she did not
weigh twice as much..And actually it's one of my all time favorite movies...I
like anything Titanic...I often think how the world would be different if all
those powerful people had lived.....But I like to pick at "Rose" from time to
time...... ~ THIS DAY In Sports History...JUNE 17,1980..The Peninsula Pilots had
just won the Carolina League VA Division 1st Half
Championship with a 51-19 record.....They went on to finish 100-40 beating the

"America's Patriot Email"..........WE GAIN STRENGTH...COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE BY
EVERY
EXPERIENCE IN WHICH WE REALLY STOP TO LOOK FEAR IN THE FACE....WHEN
WE ARE ABLE TO SAY TO OURSELVES "WE LIVED THROUGH THE HORROR" WE CAN
TAKE THE NEXT THING THAT COMES ALONG...STAND TALL...STAND
PROUD..~TODAY IS FLAG DAY..Everyone is asked to wear
the Red White and the Blue....~Finally I have attached an Email
with a Commentary by a Canadian TV Broadcaster about the USA...A very
nice thing from our close Friend - CANADA...PLEASE read this great commentary
Listen to what an
outside observer says about our GREAT COUNTRY...GOD BLESS THE
USA....:
America: The Good Neighbor.
Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a
Canadian
television commentator.
What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed
in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as
the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all
the
earth."
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were
lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in
billions of
dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries
is
today
paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the
Americans who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on
the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that
hurries
in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by
tornadoes.
Nobody helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars
into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing
about
the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any
other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed
Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman
on
the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You
talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon-
not
once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about
scandals,
and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody
to
look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here
on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian
laws,
are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
through
age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania
Railroad
and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old
caboose.
Both are still broke.
I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of
other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else
raced
to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help
even
during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is
damned tired
of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing
with
their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their
nose at
the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope
Canada is
not one of those."
Stand proud, America!
This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding
the
United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that
the
rest of the world would realize it. We are seem to be blamed for
everything,
and don't get a thank you for the things we do. I would hope that
each of
you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that
they
should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent
to
every person on the web. I am just a single American that has read
this, I
SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ
IT SOON.
Makes you proud to live here doesn't it??
OUTSTANDING!!! That's rthe Flag Day "Field of Dreams Today"..Be Safe..Be
Broud..And NEVER let go..."Sic Semper Tyrannis"....Let's Roll!!

are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

Minor league baseball umpires voted Friday to authorize their first
strike since forming a union in 2000 and said Triple-A members would
not serve as fill-in major league umps until there is a contract.
The minor league umps, whose five-year labor deal expired in November,
had previously voted not to work spring training games. The decision
whether to strike will be made by the union's officers.
"Our goal all along has been to get a fair contract without a strike,
and we still hope that we can get it done," said Andy Roberts,
president of the Association of Minor League Umpires. "Our members
have told us loud and clear, however, that they're prepared to strike
if that's what it takes to get a fair contract."
The union represents about 220 umpires in 16 leagues. Management and
the union have not met since Jan. 31, when the Professional Baseball
Umpire Corporation made what the union termed management's final offer.
Triple-A umpires regularly work major league games during the regular
season, filling in for big league umps who are injured or on vacation.
"We have our regular crews. If somebody gets injured and they're
unwilling to work, we'll find somebody willing to work," said Rob
Manfred, Major League Baseball's executive vice president of labor
relations.
Pat O'Conner, chief operating officer of minor league baseball's
governing body, the National Association of Professional Baseball
Leagues, did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
Roberts, an umpire with the Triple-A International League, had said
the average salary for minor league umpires has remained unchanged for
a decade. It is about $15,000 at Triple-A, $12,000 at Double-A,
$10,000 in full-season A-ball and $5,500 in rookie leagues.
Umpires have asked for annual increases in a four-year contract.
O'Conner has refused to comment publicly on negotiations.

What Baseball Means to Me
by Alumni Member John Graham
MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
SEPT 25,2001- My life took shape in the Summer of 1966 at a place
called Peninsula War Memorial Stadium in Hampton,Virginia. I was six
and my mom and dad took me to my first pro baseball game. We had
season tickets to the Peninsula Grays, a Cincinnati Reds affliate in
the Carolina League, that included a rookie catcher named Johnny
Bench. I know my future was shaped that year. During the next 11
seasons my family and I missed few home games and in March of 1977 I
got my courage up to ask the General Manager, Bob Neal, for a job. My
first baseball job- scoreboard operator, 5 bucks a game. Later that
year I moved up to PA Announcer and we won the Carolina League
Championship. My first year and a championship ring. I knew that
Baseball is what I wanted to do. I spent the next 15 years in the
Carolina League and the New York Penn League. My major league teams
were the Phillies,White Sox and Astros. I later took over from my
mentor and lifelong friend Bob Neal at both Peninsula and Auburn,NY
when he retired from baseball. Once at Peninsula and several years
later he asked to join him in the Upstate New York area.1980 was the
best season as far as excellence- Peninsula Pilots, a Phillies
team,100 wins wins and just 40 losses. We won both the first and
second half titles and a sweep of the legendary Durham Bulls 3-0 in
the Championship Series. The .719 winning pct is still tops in the
history of the Carolina League and one of the best ever in Pro
Baseball. Our field manager Bill Dancy remains a brother to me to
this day. There are so many wonderful memories I carried away from
the game. The best without a doubt, the People. The many great
fans,players,coaches,managers,staff,and executives over the years.
Each season was like adding folks to your family tree. I have been
fortunate to stay in touch with many of these folks. I do a daily
email letter to over 500 people, family and friends. To many to mention
all but Carolina League President John Hopkins,My asst gm in Auburn
Marc Techman, and the aforementioned Bill Dancy and Bob Neal are a few
of the people that helped me the most and I thank them and everyone I
ever worked with.I have also stayed active in the game as the
Chairman of The Peninsula Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. Honoring 100
years of baseball excellence in the Hampton-Newport News area of
Virginia. And while I don't work at it every day anymore it's always
a part of you. Just like your friends,family,church..Baseball is
indeed a big part of my life. I should say Minor League Baseball..A
field of Dreams like no other. It so unites our great Country and so
many that now work or have worked in baseball.I learned so much about
life in those years. About different parts of the country.People of
all ethnic and religious backgrounds, customs and traditions. I would
not trade those years for anything. At this difficult time in our
Country,Minor league Baseball remains a constant, a good friend.May
God Bless all of you and the United States of America!! JOHN GRAHAM
