Dear Minor League Committee members and potential members,
The Summer issue of "Beating the Bushes" that I had promised a few
months ago has since evolved into the Fall issue. Work issues and life in
general prevented me from producing the newsletter sooner; for this I sincerely
apologize. Member news, queries, and article slated for the Summer issue will be
published in the Fall issue.
As many of you now know, John Pardon passed away recently after a battle with
cancer. I would like to have a tribute for him and his contributions to minor
league research as part of this upcoming newsletter. I would be very interested
in personal stories about John and how he helped others on the Minor League
Committee over the years.
Please send them (as well as anything you would like to have published in the
newsletter) to me at kdmccann27@...
Respectfully,
Kevin McCann
Minor League Committee Chair

"America's Email".......WE REMEMBER TONY SNOW AND OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE
WITH HIS FAMILY.....
TONY SNOW was a really nice guy..And my hometown - Hampron Roads, VA is where
he started his career - 1981-82 at the Virginian - Pilot and 1982-84 as the
editorial page editor of the Daily Press....It ws really the last time either
paper had some balance in it's coverage.
That coverage inclided his love of sports...Tony attended many games of the
Peninsula Pilots of the Carolina League.....We met many times but usually it was
one of my staff that noticed he was at the game...He NEVER wanted special
treatment..AND NEVER USED HIS PRESS PASS....We urged him to but he said the fact
that he was not covering the game let him be a fan - So he paid the 3
bucks.....Tony also kept the Daily Press a "Homer" sports section - By "Homer"
we mean it showed which team it supported.....We had 2 beat writers from then
same newspaper cover every game - One for the morning - one for the
afternoon.....Also as example if there were 9 bad things to say about our team
and only one good thing - They printed the good thing..Not only because they
rooted for our team - But because the 9 bad things were not scandals...just
things wrong wiith the park or scoreboard....Kinda "Acts of God"...A Friendly
local paper is essential to a minor league baseball
team - Which Tony knew....Alas since that time both the editorial board and the
sports sections have declinded...
Tony went on to so many things that made him a guy conservatives could
trust..Tony was part of the FOX NEWS explosion in 1997...Hosting "FOX NEWS
SATURDAY" ....;FOX RADIO AND THE WEEKEND DESK......
Than his President called and he served with honor....class and
grace....Fighting cancer twice and always with smile......He always got
President Bush's views out - He kept the media alerted. President Bush 41 - who
Tony also worked - spoke of his loyality as did Barbara Bush.....The 26th
Presidential Secretary did an outstanding job... .
Having Tony be part of our lives in Southeast VA - if only for 6 years - made
his mark here...And Go to such great heights!! We salute Tony.. President Reagan
was his hero....I know that he and the President are on top of the shinning city
on the hill.today!..God Bless all his family !! - Let's Roll!!
FOR SOME REASON THIS SENT TWICE WHILE I WAS TYPING FOR NO REAASON - SORRY

FIELD OF DREAMS PROUDLY SUPPORTS SENATOR MCCAIN :
Dear Friends, We have some catch-up work to do -- and we must to do it now.
I hope you will take a moment right now to make a special RNC Victory
2-MONTH EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN PLEDGE of $2,000, $1,000, $500, $100 or $50. Here's
why I'm personally asking for your immediate help:
In the heat of their primary battle the Democrats launched a massive 50-state
voter registration drive which will result directly in dramatically increasing
Democrat voter turnout on November 4th.
We must respond by dramatically increasing our own Republican registration
efforts, matching them voter-to-voter, district-by-district, state-by-state all
across America. But we can only do that with an immediate, emergency injection
of funds.
That is why, J, I'm turning to our Party's most dedicated supporters -- like
you -- to help the RNC Victory 2008 campaign launch our most aggressive and
ambitious Voter Registration Drive in the history of the Republican Party. To
do that, we must raise $10.6 million in the next 60 days.
This is the amount we need to aggressively expand our grassroots
Get-Out-The-Vote campaign in all 50 states, capture swing voters, and turn out
the Party faithful to the polls this year. I know that is a lot of money. But
the RNC has set the essential goal of registering at least 500,000 new voters in
June and 500,000 in July.
I'm asking you to help us meet this vital goal with a secure online donation
of $2,000, $1,000, $500, $100 or $50 today by clicking here.
We cannot delay in doing everything we can to build a war chest that will
enable Republicans to get out our message, challenge the Democrats on their own
turf, expose their radically liberal agenda for our nation, and mobilize and
register historic numbers of Republican voters.
Today, I urge you to support the RNC's Victory 2008 campaign by making your
60-day pledge IMMEDIATELY!
As someone who has done so much in the past for our Party, we need your
financial support at this crucial time to strengthen our Republican Party's
efforts to regain control of Congress and win the White House in November.
So please make your generous online contribution of $2,000, $1,000, $500, $100
or $50 to RNC Victory 2008 right away by clicking here.
J, we cannot reach our goal without your support. Please let me hear from you
today.
Sincerely,
John McCain
P.S. J, right now the Democrats are registering historic numbers of voters
and building the most massive political fundraising machine in modern history
with one goal in mind: Defeat Republicans. The next 60 days will make-or-break
the Republican Party and our grassroots voter registration effort.
That's why I'm counting on you, J, as a loyal and steadfast supporter, to
participate in the RNC's Victory 2008 2-MONTH EMERGENCY PLEDGE CAMPAIGN today --
and help us kick-off our most aggressive and ambitious Voter Registration Drives
in the history of the Republican Party by making a secure online contribution of
$2,000, $1,000, $500, $100 or $50 today. Thank you.

"America's Email".... ....WE GAIN STRENGTH...COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE BY EVERY
EXPERIENCE IN WHICH WE REALLY STOP TO LOOK FEAR IN THE FACE....WHEN
WE ARE ABLE TO SAY TO OURSELVES "WE LIVED THROUGH THE HORROR" WE CAN
TAKE THE NEXT THING THAT COMES ALONG...STAND TALL...STAND
PROUD...
FYI..If Rev Wright gets even more upset after Sen Obama's speech
yesterday...Don't be surprised to have Church attendance records leaked that
show The Senator actually was there on one those "I hate America" Sundays we
have seen come out....Maybe not but I'm just saying....
Today a Letter from a late Canadian broadcaster about The USA.....He says that
we a a great COUNTRY...GOD BLESS THE
USA...
TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
America: The Good Neighbor.
Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a
Canadian
television commentator.
What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed
in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as
the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the
earth."
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were
lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in
billions of
dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries
is
today
paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans
who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on
the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that
hurries
in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by
tornadoes.
Nobody helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars
into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing
about
the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any
other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed
Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman
on
the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You
talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon- not
once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about
scandals,
and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody
to
look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here
on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian
laws,
are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
through
age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania
Railroad
and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old
caboose.
Both are still broke.
I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of
other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else
raced
to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even
during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned
tired
of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing
with
their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their
nose at
the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope
Canada is
not one of those."
Stand proud, America!
This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the
United States. It is nice that one man realizeD it. I only wish that
the
rest of the world would realize it. We are seem to be blamed for
everything,
and don't get a thank you for the things we do. I would hope that
each of
you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that
they
should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent
to
every person on the web. I am just a single American that has read
this, I
SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ
IT SOON.
Makes you proud to live here doesn't it??

Dear Little League District Administrators, League Presidents and League
Officials:
To clarify an e-mail distributed earlier this week regarding modifications to
the 2008 Tournament Rules and Guidelines, the increases to the maximum number of
players that can be named on a tournament team affidavit apply to Big League and
Senior League baseball only.
Big League Baseball - The maximum number of players that can be named on a
tournament team affidavit is now 17 (increased from 15).
Senior League Baseball - The maximum number of players that can be named on a
tournament team affidavit is now 16 (increased from 14).
Little League International apologizes for the confusion.

American League Report
BALTIMORE ORIOLES – The past two seasons, Nick Markakis has struggled to the
tune of a .221 April average. Here’s hoping you didn’t plan on waiting for his
usual slow start and taking advantage of a panicking owner as he is off to a
strong start. Normally, when a hitter’s walks are up, that is a good thing, but
it appears that teams are not going to let Markakis beat them. George Sherrill
has 5 saves in 5 chances, but tougher days are ahead. In 4.2 IP, he has yet to
allow a hit, has walked 2 and struck out 3. The hits will soon fall and his
historical trouble versus righties will surface.

SMWW Continues to put its Footprint on the World of Soccer
There are many exciting things happening at Sports Management Worldwide. Today
we bring you some news about how SMWW is helping those who have a passion for
soccer, get an opportunity to work in the business side of the sport.
Sports Management Worldwide offers the Soccer Management & Scouting course for
those who want to learn the ins and outs of scouting soccer talent and working
in the front office (front of house) of a professional soccer club. The
instructors for the course are Shep Messing, a highly successful soccer agent
and broadcaster for the New York City Red Bulls of MLS and Derek Bragg, managing
director of The Scouting Network; an international soccer scouting company that
provides scouting information to some of the top clubs in the world.
Derek Bragg's unique company continues to grow its list of international
scouts that provide information for his large database of scouting information
on players. When SMWW started the partnership with Derek, we hoped that
individuals who took the Soccer Management & Scouting course would be given the
opportunity to show Derek their ability to evaluate talent. Well, that is just
what has happened.
Here is a list of SMWW students who are now working with Derek and The
Scouting Network:
Vidar Bjarnason works just about every weekend for The Scouting Network in
Denmark and Sweden. He recently made arrangements for Derek Bragg to speak with
the Icelandic Football Association regarding scouting for them (Vidar is from
Iceland, though living in Denmark currently).
Steve Simmons, Jermaine Blackwood, Rob Childs, Eric Anang and John Print are
all Soccer Scouting & Management course graduates that continue to assist The
Scouting Network in the UK on a variety of projects and scouting needs.
Andy Graham and Matthew Martin have covered players and events for The Scouting
Network in the USA, including MLS games.
Joao Pedro Solano did some work for The Scouting Network in South America. He
covered a tournament in Paraguay and also helped find information on players for
a report that Derek was completing for a club.
What makes these accomplishments great for SMWW is that all of these students
started off with little or no soccer/scouting experience. They have all now
gained important experience by working at the professional level of the game.
If you are interested in taking the Soccer Management & Scouting course with
SMWW, select this text to register today...
SMWW's Director of Soccer is FIFA certified agent John Print, who is located
in London, England. Print recently completed a deal that sent a talented
Canadian Under 20 player named Michael D'Agostino (pictured at the top of this
story) to the club Blackpool which plays in the Football League Champioship. The
Championship is the second highest division of professional soccer in England
(the Premier League being the top league in England and one of the highest
levels of soccer in the world).
To read about D'Agostino's signing with Blackpool, select this text...
SMWW Agent Advisor Dimitri Ziogou continued his hot streak in soccer when his
player Evan Milward was signed to Toronto FC's (MLS) development squad. Thus far
Milward has played in three games.
Sports Management Worldwide's upcoming Meet and Greet in London could have
some very distinguished guests. On Friday October 26th at the Hobgoblin Pub,
SMWW could be welcome English Premiership players Tim Howard, goalkeeper for
Everton, and Mark Schwarzer of Middlesbrough. Both players are represented by
SMWW's Soccer Management & Scouting course instructor Shep Messing and his
brother Roy Messing. Shep will also be in attendance at this Meet & Greet event.

SMWW Student lands internship with Oakland Raiders
Elizabeth Stone came to SMWW will a passion for football. As a college
senior at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo California, she was looking to
get her sports career started as soon as college was finished. Rather than
waiting to complete her degree first, she enrolled in the Football GM & Scouting
course right away in-order to get college credit for the course and also to plan
ahead on getting her foot in the door with an NFL team immediately following
graduation. Well, it worked and SMWW caught up with her to see how things are
going at the Oakland Raiders.
SMWW: Elizabeth, could you tell us about your position with the Oakland
Raiders.
I am a Sponsorship Services and Marketing Intern for the Oakland Raiders. I work
on the fulfillment side of the sponsorship contracts and make sure that our
sponsors are happy and are receiving everything outlined and promised to them in
their contracts. This includes everything from stadium signage and radio spots
to luxury suites and autographed merchandise.
SMWW: What was your experience like in the Football GM & Scouting course? How
did the course help you get and/or prepare for the position with the Raiders?
The Football GM & Scouting course I took through SMWW was honestly the best
class content-wise that I have ever taken. It was a great experience to learn
from the instructors (Russ Lande, Marc Trestman & Matt Brock) who had first-hand
NFL experience. It made the transition to working for an NFL team easier for me
because they had talked to us (the class) so much about what the NFL was really
like and what to expect from professionals in the industry.
Learning about scouting techniques, player analysis and even getting to use
Coach's Office to design football plays was the most fun and interesting part
for me because I don't know of any other course anywhere that can teach those
basic skills to people who want to learn more about professional-level scouting
and coaching. It helped me gain a much more in-depth understanding of what was
happening on the field.
SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want to get a career in
football? Why?
I would definitely recommend this course because it gives people the
opportunity to meet and network with some amazing people in professional
football. In the sport management world, a lot depends on who you know.
Having this course and these teachers on my resume, along with the Sports Career
Conference/NFL Combine experience definitely impressed some people at the
Raiders and helped me get this internship.
SMWW: What advice would you give to someone who wants to get a similar
position in football?
My advice would to get as much training as possible that is relevant and to
take courses like these through SMWW as well as other colleges and universities.
Sport Management is definitely an ever-expanding industry and teams and
corporations are always looking to hire interns.
They tend to prefer to hire people who have some training or experience so look
at SMWW's courses as a chance to get that. Many positions require you to be
willing to work for little or no pay at first. Consider an internship as a
tryout for a job. Become so valuable that the team/corporation cannot afford not
to hire you.
SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?
Working in Sport Management can be difficult, but it is not at all impossible
for those who make it a priority. You will be faced with adversity, even once
you get in, but that is the nature of the business. Make and maintain as many
contacts in the industry as you can. Don't ever let any one person or obstacle
get in the way of your dreams. Make it apparent to everyone around you that this
is something you are serious about.
